Do heat pump tumble dryers make your towels as soft and fluffy as a traditional tumble dryer?

Yes

annonymousse · 21/04/2026 17:42

Yes.

DivorcedAndDelighted · 22/04/2026 00:41

Yes, but they take all day to do it.

aniloD · 22/04/2026 01:14

Yesm love mine. If thoroughly spun a new one doesn't take much longer than a traditional dryer and uses much less electricity even when it takes a bit longer. Like 1/4 of the cost

annonymousse · 22/04/2026 12:33

Mine isn't much slower than my old condenser dryer. I was pleasantly surprised when I made the switch.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 22/04/2026 12:42

Does anyone have any experience of washer dryers with a heat pump?

Are they just as good as the freestanding heat pump dryers?

hahabahbag · 22/04/2026 12:45

Yes if you have 6 hours to spareConfused ours is useless, only positive is it drives us to use the line

TheFairyCaravan · 22/04/2026 12:46

Yes.

Mine takes a couple of hours to dry a load of towels.

maowmaow · 22/04/2026 12:50

I’ve just switched from a condenser tumble dryer to a heat pump and am amazed how much better it is. It doesn’t take that much longer than the old one, but it’s far better on the clothes, and yes towels are super fluffy. Mine is a Haier.

Geneticsbunny · 22/04/2026 14:15

Heat pump driers do take longer and if you put a mixed load of different fabrics in, like towels and synyhetics then ours seems to struggle to dry everything but that is the only problem we have had so far.

SleepingisanArt · 22/04/2026 14:43

I saw a very interesting YouTube piece made by a machine repair guy. He buys driers, washing machines and dishwashers, tests them in an 'everyday' way (mixed loads etc) and then takes them apart to see how easy they are to repair and get spare parts for. He hates heat pump dryers as the parts are difficult to get, expensive and the motor and pump (the two bits most likely to fail) are really difficult to access, he had to dismantle the whole machine to get to them. Based on that I'm very cautious about the technology as I know how much companies charge for call outs and repairs!

Caspianberg · 22/04/2026 14:45

Yes ours is great. It’s an aeg one and doesn’t take hours? Like an hour maximum for bedding or towels.
it’s almost 10 years old and never had any issues

Heat pump dryers work better in some situations than others. The time taken to dry a load depends on the ambient temperature in your home. If you keep your home warm then there is more heat for them to extract from the room. My home is kept at 18C or less in winter, and it struggles with this. If your routine or household depends on being able to dry a load quickly, a heat pump dryer may not be for you. I have a large household where people often need to do a quick wash and dry. It doesn't work for us. Mine is a Bosch Serie 4 heat pump dryer.

If I was the sort of person who had a routine where timing didn't matter, or I knew what I'd be doing in 3 hours' time when the non-iron school shirts needed to be taken out and hung up before creases set, or older kids never needed to dry their own stuff in a hurry before dashing off to uni / sports, it'd be OK. As it is, I'm planning to sell it on and get another sensor condensor dryer.

Nat6999 · 20/09/2026 05:35

Yes mine does, I use tumble dryer balls in it & they come out baby soft.

I inherited one of these. I will be buying a separate dryer. I do not rate washer dryers at all. The clothes take ages to dry.

We have a Bosch one that we bought during Covid so it's a few years old and honestly don't know why people don't like them. The mixed load dry which is the one use for most things is 1 hr 43 but it's often done before that. There are lots of programs but that and the 20 min fast dry are the only ones i really use. Everything dries well, towels are fluffy and best of all it's plumbed in so I don't ever have to empty it and it's self cleaning too so I don't touch the condenser unit.

Well mine isn’t plumbed in or self cleaning so I guess that goes some way to explaining why you like yours and I don’t like mine 😁.
Ours takes forever to dry anything. It drives me insane. To answer the question in the OP though, yes my towels are fluffy, after about 4 hours of drying.

BugOnARugDrinkingTeaFromAMug · 20/09/2026 09:31

We have a heat pump, it says it takes three hours when you switch it on but it never actually does. I haven't noticed it taking any longer than my old condenser dryer.

Mumteedum · 20/09/2026 09:34

I believe heat pump driers are not suitable if you have your machine in the garage and it is unheated. In cold temperatures they are not effective. I was reading up recently when I thought I needed a new one but fortunately I just got mine fixed and it's still going.

user1471505356 · 20/09/2026 09:49

I have a heatpump drier in an outside unheated washhouse works fine. Washing machine another story.

That's good to hear! The old types are banned from January!

Bamboozled5 · 20/09/2026 18:45

Our heat pump is in the not warm utility room. It dries ok on the 3 hour mixed load cycle usually in nearer 2 hours and is much more economical than a regular drier. The short cycles don’t dry very well though.

HettyMeg · 21/09/2026 12:11

Yes , we got ours recently and towels feel softer than the condenser dryer as they aren't as scorched.

I mostly used my old fashioned dryer at something like 20-25°c. My towels felt less scorched than if I'd hung them on washing line in a climate changed British summer. 🥵

My new Bosch series 6 heat pump drier is brilliant, I can put it on to dry, the timer can say 3 hours at the start but it has a sensor & most of the time it reduces the time by half, stopping when it knows the washing is dry. I had to have the engineer out to the matching washer as the sump hose had come off & flooded my kitchen & he says the new dryer will cost pennies to do a full load compared to the old vented one which is good news for me as I'm disabled & have to use the dryer for all my washing.
