Out with the Dyson, in with the???

Hi all, please can someone give me some recommendations for a new vacuum cleaner? I have a Dyson cordless, it's old now and needs replaced but to be honest I don't think it was worth the hype so wouldn't be rushing out to buy another one. I'm thinking of an upright plug in rather than cordless. All recommendations welcome! I've seen a hoover rated highly and some shark models but I've no brand preference.

Miele cat and dog, we have had ours for 7 years and it still works wonderfully.

We also have a shark one and it gets blocked about every five minutes, it’s absolutely useless.

I bought a new Dyson V15 Detect Extra Cordless at Christmas and am
delighted with it. The battery life is so much better than previous Dysons. This is unhelpful if you definitely want a change but just thought I’d say anyway.

I loathe dyson really but I have to admit, the latest models are brilliant but eye-wateringly expensive and you have to clean them all the time else they throw a diva fit! Miele is my favourite though.

Sebo, brilliant.
I’ve now have shark robot 2 in 1, love it.
Dyson cordless (rubbish).
Cleaner asked and got Miele C3. I’ve never used it.
Have had a Hetty. Was good.

I had to get rid of the Sebo as was too heavy for me. Was a very sad day. But I’m disabled and it was no longer practical.

Out of all them Sebo was the best. Shark robot for ease is brilliant. Vacuums and mops.

Miele here. Better than the old Dyson.

I’ve got a Miele Cat & Dog, not impressed by it at all. Seems to have no suction power and just pushes the cat and dog hair backwards and forwards across the carpet.

That doesn’t sound right at all. There could be a blockage in the long tube thingy. Try detaching it, dropping a coin down one end and see if it comes out the other side.

Henry cannot be beaten, there’s a reason professional cleaners use them, added bonus is they are made in the uk and you can get spare parts!

hahabahbag · 08/04/2026 08:24

Oh and Henry’s cost far less to start with too. My Dyson was rubbish in comparison

Jojoanna · 08/04/2026 08:24

Henry ,, plus a cordless for a quick vacuum

DeftWasp · 08/04/2026 08:28

I've been selling and repairing vacuum cleaners for 20+ years.

My recommendations would be.

Anything by Numatic, Henry or Hetty, but the commercial PSP180 or Nuvac machines are the same as the Henry, but lighter and longer lived (and a bit cheaper)

For an upright SEBO are fantastic quality, Even better are the commercial Nilco machines

Older Kirby machines are great, good second hand ones are available for very little on eBay, wash the bag sleeve in the washing machine, new bag liner and you are away, will last forever, but are heavy.

Another brilliant traditional machine is the Nilfisk GM80, or bullet, shiny aluminium canister vac, has been in production since the 70's and still going strong, very light, very powerful.

At home I have a Numatic PSP180 canister and a Nilco upright.

This is true, I'm an agent for Numatic who make Henry's - they are a lovely British company, really good to deal with, I can get parts from them for every machine right back to the first models they made in the 70's.

I've fixed thousands over the past 20 years, mostly in commercial use, I've yet to find one that can't easily be got running again - in domestic use they rarely wear out.

Thank you @DeftWasp

is There a cordless you’d recommend.

I know my Dyson cordless will die at some point, as almost had it for 2 years. They seem to give up the ghost every few years. And yes, I clean filter etc, and look after it generally well. I’m very proud of saving my sister’s one, as I took it apart for her!

Vax · 08/04/2026 08:46

Greennote. Get it on TikTok they’re about £70 and a million times better than my shark or Dyson ever were

Numatic make a cordless stick vacuum, very similar to Dyson and a cordless version of the Henry.

All nematic machines use bags, which in my opinion all the best vacuums do, problem with bagless machines is that they still need filters and slowly fine dust blocks the cyclone - with a bagged machine you literally chuck out the filter system every change and are good as new, there has never been a commercial bagless machine for a good reason.

Shark are good machines too.

Thank you. I’m keeping this thread for when it dies.

HermioneWeasley · 08/04/2026 08:53

I’ve had a Dyson a Henry and a shark and I can definitely say Miele is the best. I wouldn’t get anything else now.

Hateful things. Cumbersome, too heavy, always tip over, the suction isn't adjustable enough and the pipes are always coming apart mid push.

Any Miele . Had the last one for 25 years. Currently have Cat and Dog .

I have Miele too. My carer claims it nearly lifts the floor with it's power. My floor is concrete.

Wellthisisdifficult · 09/04/2026 09:33

Had various Dyson and Sharks all shit. Henry all the way!
