Out with the Dyson, in with the???

Hi all, please can someone give me some recommendations for a new vacuum cleaner? I have a Dyson cordless, it's old now and needs replaced but to be honest I don't think it was worth the hype so wouldn't be rushing out to buy another one. I'm thinking of an upright plug in rather than cordless. All recommendations welcome! I've seen a hoover rated highly and some shark models but I've no brand preference.

Sebo upright all the way. Mine is 22 years old, living with dogs and kids in a muddy rural setting. Still going strong, fantastic cleaning. Mine is the 2005 version of the S7 Pro. Just brilliant. When I used a Henry in a holiday cottage I was totally unimpressed. Lots of work and very indifferent results.

bozzabollix · 07/04/2026 07:28

Another vote for Miele. Unbeatable.

Riverpaddling · 07/04/2026 07:31

I've got a Sebo and a Miele. The Sebo is the best I've ever had, beats everything. The Miele is also good.

Kepler22B · 07/04/2026 07:31

Problem with people saying they’ve have their Meile for 20+ years is it doesn’t say how good they are now. Quality could have massively changed in that time frame.

Notmyreality · 07/04/2026 07:33

Henry. Ditched the Dysons ages ago.

ThePoshUns · 07/04/2026 07:35

Miele, I have the corded and stick ones, both are excellent. I’ve had a Dyson , a Henry and other random brands over the years. Will stick with Miele.

Got a sebo upright two years ago on friend’s recommendation- really good suction

Large (for london standard) 4 bed house here. My Miele vaccum cleaner breaks down every 10 years roughly and then i buy a new one. Probaly could get it fixed though. Suction is always great. If it beaks it is more like a motor failure.

Sebo for the muscular stuff. Mine is an ancient plug-in and an absolute trooper. We'd got through two Dysons in quick succession and I took the advice of the man in a small independent electricals shop.

Shark cordless for quick cleans and low-traffic areas.

Enko · 07/04/2026 07:46

Another Miele fan here. At previous work we had a henry I disliked it intensely so I always find it interesting when I see the love for them on here.

Our Miele is a C2 we have a dog and it deals with hairs without issue

Upright plug in Dyson. Cordless vacuums are ok for quick clean ups but not really built for thorough cleaning. I’ve tried other brands but have always gone back to Dyson. The Shark I had was shit.

Same. Only Dyson for me. Whenever I need a new vacuum for I buy newly refurbished ones on ebay for less than half the price of new and they come with warranty.

The Dyson DC75 seems highly rated:

when my Miele cat and dog died and could not be repaired because there were no longer parts being made, I struggled on with the Henry we have for the cars and garage. Until one day after it had rolled over on its side one too many times, I went straight out and came back with a Shark Lift Away

And Im very impressed

I have a pug that you only have to look at and a bucket load of hair drops , and a cat, and it can get the hair off the carpets and furniture . Its easy to keep clean, dont get a mouthful of dust emptying it and its lightweight

JMSA · 08/04/2026 02:16

Miele.

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/04/2026 02:42

Henry. Best hoover I’ve ever owned.

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 08/04/2026 02:55

Just got my first Henry (Hetty Pet) after years of Dysons.
Bloody fantastic so far!

ALittleBitofWensleydale · 08/04/2026 07:06

I have a brilliant handheld Vax. Much better than the Dyson it replaced.
Also have a Miele cat and dog which I loathe almost as much as I loathe the Henry.

menopausalmare · 08/04/2026 07:10

Henry, every time.
We had an upright Dyson (not my choice) and it was rubbish. Glad to see the back of it.

ClaredeBear · 08/04/2026 07:16

Henry. We had a Miele which was ok but the industrial type bags were made out of materials that just didn’t make sense to me in terms of sustainability. I buy paper bags for Henry but I’ve heard some people go bagless. It it’s not good for poor Henry, who has lasted me more than 20 years, though his tool split last month and cost me a tenner.

Pabbel · 08/04/2026 07:17

Surely saying ive had my Miele 20+ plus years indicates how reliable it is ?
Its suction is as strong today as it was 20+ years ago, its never faulted

EndofDaze · 08/04/2026 07:19

Corded Sebo. Mine is 30 years old and bit like Trigger’s broom as lots of parts are available and easy to replace. Cordless Bosch Series 9. I’ve had cordless Dyson’s before but the Bosch is better and cheaper.

Nannyfannybanny · 08/04/2026 07:24

Have had several Dyson, over priced. Open plan bungalow now,no understairs cupboards for storage. I've always had long haired cats and dogs,(got 2 border collies now) I have a shark Pet Corded. It's 10 years old,had a new foot motor, which we weren't charged for! It sits on the wall behind the kitchen door, unobtrusive. My DD who has 4 dks has an upright shark after countless Dysons and disabled ds (who also had OCD and cream carpets) had an upright shark and absolutely loves it. I think a lot of people don't bother with maintenance, washing filters, checking pipes, clearing brushes, then wonder why the vacuum cleaner isn't working properly. If you didn't service the car,you could expect some faults.. very relieved that most people don't refer to the former as "Hoovers"!

JulietteHasAGun · 08/04/2026 07:31

I have a corded upright shark
corded cylinder sebo
cordless dyson stick.

i only se the shark.

KittyStanton · 08/04/2026 07:34

I’ve got a Miele Cat & Dog, not impressed by it at all. Seems to have no suction power and just pushes the cat and dog hair backwards and forwards across the carpet.

muddyford · 08/04/2026 07:37

I've had Miele for over thirty years but with the big turbo brush. Not sure if the current models are as good. My handheld is a Gtech also with a turbo brush. Friend swears by her Shark.

ElixirOfLife · 08/04/2026 08:00

Interesting how there’s such a mixed bag of reviews. I’m in the market for a new vacuum cleaner. My hand held Dyson is dying. I don’t want another. DH thinks we should get an upgrade of what we already have and hopefully reuse the hanging storage for the current one.

I asked the cleaner at work what she thought of the Henry and she said she prefers her shark at home. Also, when stored, the Henry takes up a lot of space. Reading this thread hasn’t helped me to decide either.
