Hi all, please can someone give me some recommendations for a new vacuum cleaner? I have a Dyson cordless, it's old now and needs replaced but to be honest I don't think it was worth the hype so wouldn't be rushing out to buy another one. I'm thinking of an upright plug in rather than cordless. All recommendations welcome! I've seen a hoover rated highly and some shark models but I've no brand preference.

Upright plug in Dyson. Cordless vacuums are ok for quick clean ups but not really built for thorough cleaning. I’ve tried other brands but have always gone back to Dyson. The Shark I had was shit.

Rainbowbub22 · 07/04/2026 00:10

I have had Dyson and Shark hoovers but would never buy either brand again. I have Henry now. The normal one and a cordless. Both are excellent, slightly annoying that they have bags but they work better than any other hoover, in my opinion and I wouldn’t buy any other brand

Any Miele . Had the last one for 25 years. Currently have Cat and Dog .

ShrimpBoil · 07/04/2026 00:58

My Miele's about 30 years old I think! Cylinder, as an upright kills my back.

patooties · 07/04/2026 00:59

Miele cat and dog. The dog has chewed it and earn the foot pads on it in a fight she had with it but it still works!

Polaris777 · 07/04/2026 01:08

I bought a new Dyson V15 Detect Extra Cordless at Christmas and am
delighted with it. The battery life is so much better than previous Dysons. This is unhelpful if you definitely want a change but just thought I’d say anyway.

WearyAuldWumman · 07/04/2026 01:10

I replaced mine with a cordless Vax.

Cupcakegirl13 · 07/04/2026 02:51

Another Miele vote here , I’ve had the cat and dog and currently have one of thier cheaper cordless which is amazing .

whirlyhead · 07/04/2026 06:39

I had a Miele cat and dog and the engine burnt out after 18 months so I would not recommend them!

Cazs818 · 07/04/2026 06:41

I’ve had various Dyson and shark never again over hyped and not worth it

I’ve had my Miele pet one 4 years now and never looked back best investment I’ve ever made

AlwaysSometimesNever · 07/04/2026 06:46

Henry.
I don’t think Miele are as good as they once were. We had my MIL’s old one for years and it was great and when it eventually died replaced it with a Cat and Dog, which needed fixing in a couple of years. We thought it was a one off so when that went kaput we replaced it with another and that was rubbish too.
Henry otoh has been an absolute brick. Feels very basic and unfancy and just gets the job done. We took our cleaner’s advice and she loves us for it 🤣

RaraRachael · 07/04/2026 07:07

Henry, even though he tips over and the cord gets tangled up. Much better cleaning power than any cordless.

user1486915549 · 07/04/2026 07:13

I had 2 G Tech. Both died just outside the warranty.
Bought a Henry after many recommendations. Love him. Got the one that’s best for wooden floors but a simple change of attachment for rugs

Pabbel · 07/04/2026 07:14

Another vote for Miele had mine 20 + years and still going strong.

TheChicDreamer · 07/04/2026 07:16

Henry. Lasts for years and really effective. The only brand that any cleaners I’ve ever had would use.
i will never buy a Dyson again.

Nosejobnelly · 07/04/2026 07:17

Shark!! We got rid of our upright Dyson. It was so heavy and cumbersome. Dh loved a Dyson but I put my foot down about it this time. Even when we’ve had cleaners it’s been heavy for them and I really struggled e the stairs - we have a lot of stairs!
Agree that Miele are good too!

Posiai · 07/04/2026 07:17

I hate Henry! So awkward to use. The best I’ve ever had was my Miele cat and dog but I’ve heard they’re not as good now. I like shark for cleaning power but the heads do seem to need replacing after a while- this is happened on both my upright and cordless, and also happened on my mum’s one. They stop getting power to them and the brush stops spinning. The new heads aren’t cheap either.

DonewhatIcando · 07/04/2026 07:18

I loved my Henry but Ive now got a Shark, corded, its fab, light, lots of attachments and the suction is fantastic, I accidentally put it on Max suction and I literally struggled to push it 😀
I have a very moulty dog and it great for getting up the dog hair

PineConeOrDogPoo · 07/04/2026 07:18

Miele with HEPA filter as have allergies. Was called C3. Now changed name...

DisplayPurposesOnly · 07/04/2026 07:18

Shark liftaway (corded).

Morepositivemum · 07/04/2026 07:19

I actually have a thread on hoovers op and had great solutions but kept on using Henry and will until I get a chance to properly look around more than the local shop. Henry is amazing but too heavy to lug about for me

rwalker · 07/04/2026 07:20

45 year old Kirby hoover it would suck the sun out the sky
get on marketplace cheap as

JoanThursday · 07/04/2026 07:24

My DH took a second mortgage out on a Dyson cordless with all the added extras. The battery stopped within weeks, something went wrong with the filter and it was always showing as 'blocked". I hated it. I took it to the local vacuum cleaner man three times. He hated it.

In the end, I spent £40 and refurbished the old Henry that was languishing in the garage. He's not an upright but, by 'eck, he's good.

LeroyJenkinssss · 07/04/2026 07:25

Henry. Honestly he’s a workhorse and he’s fab. We have a dog and a cat and he copes admirably as well as sucking up any debris from any DIY projects.
