Book of info for when I die

I’m not sure housekeeping is the right topic, but …

I’ve seen books you can fill out with info for surviving spouse/children after your death. Details of property, insurance, funeral wishes, things they need to know where to find etc. We’ve just redone our wills as our children are now over 18 so we can drop the guardian bit and can leave them their inheritance outright.

I think one of these books would be invaluable - as a prompt for me, to cover everything, as well as for those (DH? Children?) who survive me.

But the ones I’ve seen are all American, and there are enough differences between the legal systems that I don’t think the prompts will be quite right.

Anyone found a good one? Or am I going to have to put one together myself??

It would certainly make it easier to use the incapacitated passwords in this situation, but I don't think you are really allowed to. I think that the Attorney is supposed to register with the person's bank who will give them their own access to the account.

Yep, this is correct. And it is relatively painless, and and easy to do. It means that all transactions can be provided a full audit trail of who did what, when.

Please, please do NOT include your bank passwords or PINs in your file. Just a list of all the banks / financial institutions you have accounts with is sufficient, plus a list of accounts if you like (but that's not essential).

You do not need passwords or PINs to access accounts in the event of an LPA being invoked or on death. Just inform the bank and they will follow the correct procedure.

You would be illegally accessing the account using someone else's log ons plus it's heaven for a burglar.

Totally agree - bank passwords and PIN details are a step too far!

I have just done similar but did it in Word and emailed to my two best friends so if I get hit by a bus they can share.

Fil died recently and left details of his assets and a funeral plan. He also had large print bank statements which were a great help with lots of odds and ends like charity donations.

I do internet banking and have now printed a statement to put in Life Book.

This thread has been very useful for me, I’ve ordered a book and made a list. I wonder if anyone here can answer a couple of questions for me. I was widowed a couple of years ago, I live in peace and harmony with my 23 year old DD in a home that is owned outright. Her brother has severe ASD and LD so won’t be inheriting and she will look out for him and manage his affairs. I was thinking of changing my bank accounts to be joint with DD so she has easy access before the rigmarole of LPA (which is in place). I know I can ask the bank, which is not always easy, but I thought someone here might have info or advice. I don’t think she will rob me but are there other possible disadvantages, can it even be done?
TIA

@davros one potential disadvantage is that your DD will become the legal owner (along with you) of everything in the joint account(s). Not only could she therefore withdraw it all and do what she likes with it, but it could also mean she won’t qualify for benefits (depending if the level of savings is above the limit set) and if she were to marry and then divorce in future it would be counted as her assets and potentially included in a divorce settlement.

@ChessieFL thanks for your clear and informative reply. I need to give this a lot more thought! I’ll start with the “when I’m dead” book
