Do you dry your laundry outdoors and what do you call it?

I LOVE pegging my washing out 12 months of the year if I possibly can.
it’s not just the freshness and the brightening of whites, there’s some kind of meditative satisfaction going on. And saving electricity of course.

I call it “pegging out” because that’s what my Mum called it.

Even on a freezing day like today it’ll get mostly dry and finish in the dryer

Hang out the washing. I only dry outside in summer. My line is a faff - it’s a wall mounted rotary, fan in summer but in winter too much hassle. I’m lucky to have a spare room and a heated airer

Dearg · 16/01/2026 08:02

I would call it ‘hanging out’ . I have not done it for a few weeks because it’s freezing and I have had Covid, but I do love a fresh air dried basket of washing.

FionnulaTheCooler · 16/01/2026 08:03

I peg mine out all year round too, on any day that's dry. I love the smell of laundry that's been outside and I don't have a tumble dryer so it dries much quicker on the clothes horse if it's been outside in the fresh air. I've got one load out already this morning and just waiting on my second load finishing, it's meant to be cold but sunny here.

PiggieWig · 16/01/2026 08:04

I peg mine out but only in summer. I don’t think it dries properly in winter.

wertgyhjk · 16/01/2026 08:04

I don't, because I don't have a garden. I would if I could! I call it "hanging out".

Randomchat · 16/01/2026 08:05

Hanging out the washing. Or just putting the washing out. I only do it at this time of year if I can get it out early enough or else it never dries.
The other day it all froze to the line and was stiff as a board

RampantIvy · 16/01/2026 08:08

Line drying. It's too damp at this time of year to line dry washing so I hang it up in a spare bedroom with a dehumidifier. I tumble dry towels and bedding.

muddyford · 16/01/2026 08:08

Hanging out the washing. And it's going out in a minute, even if I have to finish it indoors later. It was frozen stiff the other day but smelled wonderfully fresh.

ColdSnowCat · 16/01/2026 08:10

I absolutely hate hanging up washing with a passion. I love winter as I have an excuse to not go outside, and hang up the washing in the utility room - buying a dehumidifier has been game changing for this!
I will admit on hot summer days I will hang up outside as it dries so quickly, but if there is even the slightest hint of rain I'll keep it inside. I can't think of anything worse than having to half dry washing outside and then re hang it all inside to finish off!!

BiddyPopthe2nd · 16/01/2026 08:12

I hang mine out. Winter and summer, once there is any drying. At home, on a rotary line. But here (on temp posting for work) on a clothes horse on the apartment balcony.

CatsSleepFatandWalkThin · 16/01/2026 08:12

I would call it hanging out if I ever did it. Tumble dry 365 days a year, here.

Silverbirchleaf · 16/01/2026 08:13

My washing won’t go outside until it warms up, spring onwards.

I use an airer and dehumidifier, plus tumble drier for sheets, towels, and to finish off items.

Catwalking · 16/01/2026 08:39

Mines “putting the washing out”.
I hate it, endless prs of socks 😆.
In the cold weather i have to wear some fine cosy gloves.
I have a drying rack on a pulley, in a large shed for the not quite dry stuff to air & not go mouldy & am thinking of putting similar in my greenhouse…

Beachtastic · 16/01/2026 08:40

Pegging out the washing is one of life's greatest pleasures! 🌞💗😍

tealandteal · 16/01/2026 08:43

I call it putting the washing out. I use an airer inside and if it’s sunny or dry I just put the entire airer outside. Then it’s super quick to bring in if it’s start to rain.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/01/2026 08:44

Hanging out.

TheBewleySisters · 16/01/2026 08:55

I hang out my washing as often as weather permits. I have a large drying green in the back garden.

Oh this is so MN! The term "drying green" has just entered my vocabulary 🤣🤗

SpringBulbsPop · 16/01/2026 09:03

I just hang the washing out.
Pegging sounds a bit rude OP!

Tdcp · 16/01/2026 09:13

'Putting the washing out', pegging out has different connotations now op 😂

honeylulu · 16/01/2026 09:23

"Putting washing on the line" is what we say and what my mum always said (despite the fact that she had a rotary drier rather than a traditional line).

I've never said pegging out though as posters have said that has a rude vibe these days! Though in our house pegs are called nip-nips as that was what our son used to call them as a toddler.

user2848502016 · 16/01/2026 09:26

I love it, love the smell!
I call it “hanging out the washing”

EndorsingPRActice · 16/01/2026 09:32

I hang my washing out on a rotary drier in the summer and use clothes horses indoors in the winter, apart from towels which I tumble dry year round. I love the smell of washing dried outdoors too. If I attempt to dry outside in winter it generally feels damp on coming back in the house so I then need to put it on the clothes horses, so just don’t bother with the outside part.

Celiathebanshee · 16/01/2026 09:34

I love putting the washing out but not until it is a bit warmer

MrTwisterHasABlister · 16/01/2026 09:36

Hanging out. If it’s dry out, it goes out.

I put mine out on a very large clothes horse (I use pegs to hang items from the bars, which means nothing is folded over them - speeds up drying process).

Then if it rains, I just pull the Horse into the kitchen and put the dehumidifier on (also used if it’s chucking it down from the start of the laundry process).
