Do you dry your laundry outdoors and what do you call it?

I LOVE pegging my washing out 12 months of the year if I possibly can.
it’s not just the freshness and the brightening of whites, there’s some kind of meditative satisfaction going on. And saving electricity of course.

I call it “pegging out” because that’s what my Mum called it.

Even on a freezing day like today it’ll get mostly dry and finish in the dryer

I've got cyclone pegs (never tested in an actual cyclone, unsurprisingly) but they do give me peace of mind that whatever I put on the line will stay there if it's windy.

Never hang out washing. I tumble everything as it means I rarely have to iron. I take items out warm and either fold or hang.

I always hang my washing out, the tumble dryer is for towels only and i never have to iron. Having a military background i have high standards for my clothes ironing wise. If it is taken out the machine as soon as it stops, given a good shake as you hang it up and put onto coat hangers whilst still outside it won't need ironing.

I love hanging out the washing all year long!

Had some out on the line for a couple of hours yesterday but today has been wet and miserable all day! Hoping for a dryer day tomorrow so I can do the bedding.

TappyGilmore · 18/01/2026 22:05

The sun is only on our back garden until about 2pm even at the height of summer, so yes I do hang it out, but I need to get up early to get it all done! I live somewhere with a warmer climate so as long as it’s timed right, I can probably hang out at least 7-8 months of the year. (Although warmer does not equal drier!)

I hate the tumble dryer and it’s only used in emergencies.

Daisy62 · 18/01/2026 22:17

Hang out as much as possible. Wooden pegs (always take them in). Even a wee while outside gets a start on the drying. Tumble dryer sometimes in the winter to finish off towels and bedding if I don’t want them having in the house.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 18/01/2026 22:37

I am all for humming, "I'm going to hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line..." when mine goes out! I am looking forward to be able to hang everything out again, and know that it will actually dry, instead of the legs and long sleeves getting tangled up in a damp heap in the dryer. I won't have bedsheets attempting to dry indoors, either.

I have cracked my windows open for the first time this year, so the house can start to smell a bit fresher, too!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 18/01/2026 22:47

I hate hanging washing outside. It always comes back with bird shit and spiders all over it, not to mention towels like cardboard!

I feel I’ve been letting myself down all these years.

😂😂

DiscoBeat · 19/01/2026 00:20

I love drying it outside. Roll on the spring. I just call it 'hanging out the washing'

isitmytime · 19/01/2026 05:11

I “peg out” clothes all year round. If the ground is dry it goes out…. But I “hang out” bedding (also all year round). I’ve no idea why they’re different..they just are. I put them on my whirlie!

SouthernNights59 · 19/01/2026 05:19

I call it hanging it out, and do it all year round (NZ). I usually have to finish drying it inside in the depths of winter, but sometimes can get it all dry if I put it on the airer on the terrace once the sun goes off the line. I don't own a dryer.

Iluvmydog · 19/01/2026 05:29

I would say hanging out if I did it but severe allergies mean I can’t hang it out from Feb to Oct (ish) so there’s no point.

Lulu1919 · 19/01/2026 06:43

We hang out the washing on the line

Ieswe · 19/01/2026 06:54

I call it hanging out the washing.

I can’t use wooden pegs. They set my teeth on edge with the feeling of the wood on the wet item. I have stainless steel pegs now and they’re brilliant. No more brittle plastic ones.

Can’t get it out as often as I’d like because we only have a roof terrace and the slightest bit of wind and it all blows over. When I had a proper garden I loved hanging it out and seeing it blowing in the breeze. Now it’s more of a stressful gamble.

It’s all hung indoors when I can’t get it outside, usually by the open door or with a dehumidifier going. Maybe I’ve had bad tumble dryers but I’m not really a fan other than to finish things off after hanging out or if something is needed urgently.

Gettingbysomehow · 19/01/2026 06:59

I never hang my washing out. All my neighbours are elderly and they don't like it. I cant see the point in antagonising them in their retirement. They are a bit Hyacinth Bucket. I take it to the laundrette to dry or it dries on the electric heater in the spare room.
I get a lot out of them in return, they take in my parcels and look after my cats when Im not there.

Oh this is so MN! The term "drying green" has just entered my vocabulary 🤣🤗

You need greenie poles on your drying green!

I’m an all year round hanger out of washing…I even have extra greenie poles (put in by previous owner)placed to catch the winter sun!

Wow! I thought that generation would be all for it. I can’t see how a lone oaf washing could offend anyone?

You'd be surprised. They really hate it. If I had a big family it would be a real pain but there is only me living there.

Put the washing out

clary · 20/01/2026 15:36

Pegged out a load of towels today about 2pm – I reckon they will be dry by 4.30 as it’s bright and very blowy – lovely.

mum2jakie · 24/01/2026 12:48

Absolutely beautiful drying day here in the midlands! Got all my whites and towels out on the line and third load now in the wash too.

Taking the washing out.. always unless it's actually raining..I have solar panels..I do the washing if it's windy, sun alone doesn't cut it at this time of year.. occasionally the thick stuff will be Finnished off in the dryer.. the rest,in the airing cupboard..I also love the smell. Was chatting to a friend the other day about how ridiculously happy a line of pure white nappies made me feel. Just had dgd to stay, white school shirt covered in makeup, fake tan. Yup, I got it spotless!

Nothing whitens like the sun.
I love the smell of line dried sheets especially.
