Do you dry your laundry outdoors and what do you call it?

I LOVE pegging my washing out 12 months of the year if I possibly can.
it’s not just the freshness and the brightening of whites, there’s some kind of meditative satisfaction going on. And saving electricity of course.

I call it “pegging out” because that’s what my Mum called it.

Even on a freezing day like today it’ll get mostly dry and finish in the dryer

I would call it hanging out if I ever did it. Tumble dry 365 days a year, here.

Yep, me too. I love the way tumble drying has reduced the need for ironing to near zero.
(And have to say I thought 'pegging out' meant someone was on their last legs, and their death was imminent!)

PorkPieForStarters · 16/01/2026 17:34

I hung my bedding out at 8.30am and have just got home and I'd say it's 95% dry so I've hung it inside to finish off. It's been 96% humidity here today (up north) but dry so not the best day but it'll be completely dry by bed time.

Thicker things like sweater cuffs or jeans waistbands would probably take overnight inside to dry completely but it's still faster than air drying inside plus smells great, saves energy and isn't adding moisture to my house.

Hanging washing out is one of my favourite things!

I’ve loved reading all these replies and I’m off to research bougie clothes pegs.
it had never occurred to me before now to match the colours of the pegs on each item. That’s a standard I could only aspire to.

I ‘put mine out’ as much as I can.

TheDenimPoet · 18/01/2026 19:05

I "hang the washing out". Only when it's warm enough to dry it completely, though. I can't be bothered with multiple steps to clothes drying!

Cat1504 · 18/01/2026 19:06

I hang out my washing from around April to September….rest of year tumble dry …or put on a maiden in the utility room

purpleygrey · 18/01/2026 19:13

pegging has a very different meaning these days.

ERthree · 18/01/2026 19:16

Hanging the washing out or as we say here in S.W Scotland "hangin the washin oot"

Why?

what a waste of resources.

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 18/01/2026 19:20

Hanging the washing out on my whirligig, although I’m a fair weather hanger outerer except for woolens which I deliberately hang out when it’s freezing instead of washing them

Pegging out the washing is one of life's greatest pleasures! 🌞💗😍

Definitely 👍🏻👍🏻😀😀

SpikeGilesSandwich · 18/01/2026 19:23

If you want to be fancy, plain wooden clothes pegs react well to being coloured with sharpies!
(obviously don’t colour the bit that goes on the clothes)

Evaporateandlisten · 18/01/2026 19:24

Ours is always put outside. We tend to say ‘put out the laundry’. We are quite common

IsThisTheWaytoSlamMyPillow · 18/01/2026 19:26

I “put it out” as in “just putting the washing out…” Not on days like today though, grey and gloomy. Love a line of washing out when the sun’s shining and there’s a bit of breeze.

PuppyMonkey · 16/01/2026 12:23

I’ve always called it hanging out the washing but I’ve moved to an area of Derbyshire where everybody “pegs out” and tbh that phrase makes my teeth itch. No idea why. Grin

No point hanging it out in winter, waste of time as you just have to finish it off indoors or etc so you might as well save time and hang it indoors in the first place.

*waits for someone to trot out the old chestnut that if the pavement’s dry then your washing will dry - spoiler, no it won’t.

Well, that works for me where I am.

Mine goes out year round , done on days it doesn't look like it's going to rain. Very rarely need to 'finish it off' indoors but even if I do it's no big deal to put tops on hangers & everything else on an airer.

i don't have nor want a dryer.

interchangably
hang out
put out
peg out

Mostly hang out.

when I had my shoulder replaced (smashed up in an accident) I was distraught at the thought I may not get enough use of it back to hang out the washing (love a line full of whites!!) as they were saying if I had a good recovery I might be able to lift my arm in line with my bust, luckily I made a better recovery and can hang washing on the line, but it does hurt.

Those days are the best. But I had a load dry today, despite it being grey & meh here!

My peg 'rules' were mental. When I went overseas for work I gave all my pegs to a neighbour. When I moved here I bought loads in the same colour! Now I've had to add some new ones I have to use the old ones together first, then the new ones together. No mucibg

(my head is not somewhere you want to inhabit! )

I’m both amazed and impressed at the people who actually enjoy this!
I’ve spent my life hanging washing inside or out and getting a dryer in the last couple of years has been a revelation!
I still hang washing on the line in good weather (as DH would moan about the expense otherwise) but have no indoor rack or space for one now so the dryer it is, I can’t believe how quickly you can get a whole load done, even mattress protectors that drip on the line for ever, total game changer!

it shouldn't drip. Is your washing machine old or broken?

OttersMayHaveShifted · 18/01/2026 19:54

Hanging the washing out. I do it sometimes in the summer but it's a pita because it takes so much longer than bunging it in the tumble-dryer. In any case, I live in a stupidly rainy place, so I rarely get to do it!

CloudPop · 16/01/2026 12:44

I‘m with @PuppyMonkey. What’s the point of hanging it outside in winter, it still then needs drying inside.

Because often it doesn't, even if it does it is completely dry much faster than if it never went out.

it smells nice

less moisture in the house, it's not good for the house to have loads if water dispersed into it.

i LOVE washing flapping in the breeze, especially a load of whites.

CheshireCat1 · 18/01/2026 19:57

I call it pegging out. I love it on a breezy day, especially when my children were babies and I had a line full of bright white terry nappies. My elderly neighbour used to tell me that she loved seeing the nappies and baby clothes on the line, it brought back memories for her.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 18/01/2026 20:14

Never hang out washing. I tumble everything as it means I rarely have to iron. I take items out warm and either fold or hang.

clary · 18/01/2026 20:26

I cal it pegging out, or pegging out the washing.

I love it and I do it all year – much to a colleague's surprise the other day.

Not pegged out all this week tho as the weather has been grim here. even I don't peg out when it's snowing :) but if it's dry and windy, even in January the sheets will get dry and the towels will get dryer.

clary · 18/01/2026 20:32

Oooh just seen the thread includes drying green excellent. I am in Derbys too @PuppyMonkey sorry to peg out.

And pegs! Yesss! I have soft touch plastic ones and they are ace. They are in different colours and OBVS you have to match the pegs to each other; and also to the washed item please, if possible. We don't have enough dark grey (= back) pegs tho. I got quite excited when I realised a new pack of pegs with a corally-orange colour was a perfect match for a favourite top (now sadly worn out).

Oh and I have to confess.... I hang my washing up in rainbow order. I never have anything yellow tho. But the line looks so lovely.

I feel I’ve been letting myself down all these years.
