What sort of headphones or ear buds do you use when cleaning?

Could some kind person explain to me please in Noddy vocabulary how people listen to podcasts and music when cleaning please?

This is all new to me and I recently discovered that I am autistic.

I am not sure if headphones will work when I am cleaning as I need to move a lot and move my head to get under cupboards etc? Also, I am not sure if I will like the weight of them on my head.

But equally I don’t want to invest in an expensive pair of ear buds to match my iPhone in case I don’t like the feel of them in my ears?

The added difficulty is that I find tech stores overwhelming so would prefer to buy on-line.

So what does everyone use please? Any recommendations? This is all new to me so please forgive my ignorance.

I am looking for something to cut out the noise of my husband working from home at the same time as listening to clean-along podcasts or music.

And while we are at it; what does everyone wear to do seriously cleaning in? I find jeans too uncomfortable. For heavy work like oven cleaning and floor scrubbing? My preference would be pyjamas but I have to take my dog out a lot during the day.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I use airpods (the ones without the little rubber tips) and barely notice I’m, wearing them. They are noise cancelling but not entirely due to not having the rubber tips I guess. I like that you can pause and unpause by clicking one of them rather than having to pick up the phone. However if you are bending right over eg scrubbing floor by hand, weeding the garden, they sometimes stop by themselves, I think they think they’ve been dropped.

Shokz here as well, they're great and pretty lightweight. They are not totally noise-cancelling though if that's what you're after.

outerspacepotato · 09/12/2025 18:21

I would try noise cancelling over the ear headphones. My youngest who is ND and has a lot of issues with noise uses that style. She tried the Soundcore Anker Lite to see if she liked that style, then bought a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort.

Heavy or deep clean days I wear leggings and a t shirt or if it's cold, an old sweatshirt.

Thank you for the Shokz recommendations, FinallyHere & SydneyCarton
I haven’t heard of those before! They look as if they fit pretty securely.

And thanks for noise cancelling headphone recommendations
outerspacepotato
but I think I probably need to hear some outside sound or else I get a bit scared in my old house 😆😆 don’t like people creeping up on me 🧟

ExquisiteDecor
thank you very much; I think they would be a good first try as “barely noticing they are in” is what I am after.

And appreciate the clothing recommendations too everyone! Thx!

@Woodlandthemes67 They come in two sizes - I have the smaller one (OpenRun mini, I think) and my partner (male) has the larger standard size.

Jeronnemo · 10/12/2025 11:59

I clean in literally any bagy t shirt and elasticated waistband joggers but then I use knee pads for any time I'm on the floor.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 10/12/2025 12:04

After shocks as head phones. Old clothing - track suit bottoms/leggings/shorts and an old t shirt. Something easy to move in and already has bleach/paint stains.

NebulousSupportPostcard · 10/12/2025 12:16

At home for DIY etc I often wear an old pair of lightweight walking trousers because they are very tightly woven fabric (probably originally water-repellant) and they don't stain or bleach easily, and they dry quickly. The ones I am wearing now were just a cheap pair from a local outdoor shop.

Stretch walking leggings are also good. They are tougher fabric than fashion leggings and usually have a pocket that fits a phone, eg
https://www.regatta.com/womens-pentre-stretch-ii-walking-trousers-black/ (these are almost always v cheap at outlet shops on ebay and amazon).

I don't love headphones, but when needed I use a cheap pair of sports earphones that stay put. eg www.amazon.co.uk/JLab-Sport-Running-Headphones-Sweat-Resistant-Green/dp/B0CYP8G8DT

Knee pads are a good call! Thank you!

This is the main regatta outlet store. I think the non-stretch trousers I had on yesterday were only £6.99. On eBay there is usually no postage but worth trying both platforms, as they sell old stock and availability varies between them.

I prefer ambient sounds to music/voice being blasted directly into my ears, so i use a clip-on Bluetooth speaker that pairs to my iPhone.

i either clip it to the back waistband of my clothing or use the integrated magnet to stick it to the fridge, door hinge or other handy spot depending on the room.

DoAWheelie · 13/12/2025 02:14

I got a tablet with very good speakers and just play what I want on that and move it room to room with me.

It also means I can use it to watch things that have a visual component like some video podcasts that are mostly audio but might show a picture every now and then to demonstrate something. I can easily stop, have a look and go back to what I'm doing.

I also prefer this as I'll put on an audiobook or something while I'm playing a video game and it being on speaker means I can still hear the game audio (though I turn off game music).

I have a pair of Bose noise-cancelling headphones, as I find the pod type hurt my ears. They are super comfortable and mean I can listen to a podcast while I move through the house.
They are these ones: https://www.bose.com/p/headphones/bose-quietcomfort-ultra-headphones/QCUH-HEADPHONEARN.html?dwvar_QCUH-HEADPHONEARN_color=DEEP+PLUM
Super comfortable and not heavy. I didn't buy them to clean in, but to travel. They are great for this too as they fold quite flat and small in their case.

QuietComfort Ultra Headphones | Bose

QuietComfort Ultra Headphones are the perfect audiophile headphones, with both noise cancelling and Immersive Audio technology.

What about exercise leggings for cleaning? Proper stretchy ones, but thick enough to wear when walking the dog? I swear by some I got from Amazon - I think the brand was CrazyYoga. The are incredibly comfortable, stretchy and not see through. They wash well too. You could wear them and just put a baggy jumper or jacket on when going out.
