Trainers from vinted smell of strong fragrance

Trainers are as described in that look like worn once. They're not ones I can get easily.

Anyway they absolutely reek of some sort of very strong fragrance. Smells stronger than febreeze but then I don't buy anything like that. They have definitely not been washed

I am very sensitive to strong smells anyway but even hubby with zero sense of smell thinks they stink!

I've stuck them in the shed for now. I have white vinegar but won't put them in the machine as they're for running. Admittedly I could drag them through some local fields and that might cure it eventually 🤣 but wondered if anyone had any tips please? It is very strong

spray them lightly with water (assuming not suede or anything) and put them in a bag of rice. It will draw the smell out as it draws out the water

I would sprinkle inside liberally with baking soda and leave overnight and hoover in morning .

I've bought a couple of things from Vinted that have also had this awful super-strong fabric freshener smell. Resold one item because it was just too vile, and the other still smells of it despite washing. What on earth is it??

Fabreeze is impossible to remove - ghastly stuff.

I've honestly no idea what it is and stronger than any febreeze I've smelt in the past. But like I say I don't buy things like this.

Thanks for the tips. At least it's just running shoes and I can get them muddied up soon enough but they'll have to live in the shed 😂 not sure I can cope with the garage smelling like that. I honestly don't know how anyone can stand the smell or think it's nice.

Fabric softener smell is absolutely correct but really really strong. Wondering if it's those ball things? Horrid
