Is hanging washing on the line not a thing anymore?

Interesting conversation with neighbour recently:

Him: ‘I see you like hanging your washing out to dry.’
Me: ‘Er, yeah. Doesn’t everyone?’
Him: ‘Well no, we think it’s a bit common.’

Now this was said tongue in cheek but I’ve come to realise that NONE of my neighbours have washing lines (only us!) and we all have big enough gardens. Plus a local friend recently said that they tumble dry everything because they can’t stand seeing washing hanging around.

Is this no longer a thing? Has the world gone mad?? I live on top of a very windy hill in a sunny part of the UK - unless it’s raining washing usually dries in a couple of hours. I’m baffled as to why people wouldn’t take advantage of that!

I hang mine out, I love the smell.

bigknickersbigknockers · 02/08/2025 07:28

Keep away from these people, they are very odd. Wink

BCBird · 02/08/2025 07:28

Yeah,it's common sense

Oasisagiger · 02/08/2025 07:29

I don’t own a tumble dryer and always put my clothes on the washing line if the weather allows it. I actually get joy out of unloading the machine when the sun is shining and hanging it up 😂

BCBird · 02/08/2025 07:29

I put mine out any opportunity. Do as you please OP

CrackedHeels2 · 02/08/2025 07:30

Hang mine out as much as possible. I don’t think it is common, more environmentally friendly than a dryer! I also love the smell - fresh and clean.

PistachioTiramisuLimoncello · 02/08/2025 07:30

Always hang outside. I’m m baffled by anyone who wants to tumble dry their clothes. Yuk!

SutekhsEars · 02/08/2025 07:30

I've been wondering the same thing. I don't think any of my neighbours hang washing out. Possibly bed linen occasionally, but not clothes.
I'm common, I'm quite happy to hang my pants out!

OldWomanInACardigan · 02/08/2025 07:32

I always hang mine out when the weather's good.

Iclyn · 02/08/2025 07:33

I love a long washing line drying outside , it also takes a shortish time to dry .
However I've not had a long line for years and years as have a whirligig round one .
It's down the side of the house , not seen by the neighbours , but doesn't dry quickly , and doesn't give the joy of a traditional line flapping away !

Savvyshopper81 · 02/08/2025 07:33

@SutekhsEars I’m common as muck. Literally have a line full of pants as I type. Plus I’m off to Lidl. Best not tell the neighbours.

Ours goes out on the line at every given opportunity.

It’s not common, it saves money and is environmentally friendly. Plus I can’t shrink clothes when they’re on the line!

MadameDeveria · 02/08/2025 07:34

Another one hanging out the washing here! I think my neighbours either side do too. Ignore them and carry on. It’s better for your clothes and the environment and better for your energy bill!

Anyone who says that hanging out the clothes is ‘common ‘ is tragic!

RaraRachael · 02/08/2025 07:35

We're very common as our washing gets hung on communal lines down by the seashore for all the world to see

I never use my tumble drier due to cost. Your neighbour's views sound quite American as I believe it can be a neighbourhood rule in some places that washing can't be hung outside as it lowers the tone

GentleSheep · 02/08/2025 07:36

I am always delighted when the weather permits and I can hang my washing outdoors! Fortunately my neighbours are like-minded so that particular madness hasn't struck here yet. Which reminds me, I need to get the washing going!

tripleginandtonic · 02/08/2025 07:36

We're common where I live because we all do it when the weather's fine.

DorothyWainwright · 02/08/2025 07:38

It's the opposite in my street. The grotty common families (yes, I judge thankyouverymuch) very rarely hang their laundry out.

The sensible, nice families hang out all year round.

ShowOfHands · 02/08/2025 07:38

I only line dry and have never had a machine. I don't have any neighbours with washing lines though.

LostMySocks · 02/08/2025 07:40

All the houses round here peg out. It's considered the nice area of town and houses all have good size gardens.
It's cheaper and more environmentally friendly to dry outside and you avoid damp and mouldy in the house

ExtremelyDivided · 02/08/2025 07:41

I can see into the next three or four gardens each side from my upstairs window and everyone here does, from chats at work about the weather I think most there do too, my parents and ILs do, I see it on lines at friends houses when I go round for coffee, perfectly normal.

RampantIvy · 02/08/2025 07:42

Everyone I know line dries their washing when the weather allows.

Maybe it is because we are more environmentally aware?

@Savvyshopper81 your neighbours are ill educated insufferable snobs.

comfyshoes2022 · 02/08/2025 07:42

Is your neighbour American? That attitude is more common over there, where some people think you would only line dry if you couldn’t afford to own or run a tumble dryer.

FancyShmancy · 02/08/2025 07:43

God, I bloody LOVE hanging out washing on the line. I even get pleasure from seeing other people’s full washing lines although nobody arranges theirs as beautifully as I do Grin

This comment would make me put up an extra line and fill it every day!

mamagogo1 · 02/08/2025 07:44

Well everyone hangs washing here - affluent community mostly mid 30’s to late 50’s

Bananachimp · 02/08/2025 07:44
