Is hanging washing on the line not a thing anymore?

Interesting conversation with neighbour recently:

Him: ‘I see you like hanging your washing out to dry.’
Me: ‘Er, yeah. Doesn’t everyone?’
Him: ‘Well no, we think it’s a bit common.’

Now this was said tongue in cheek but I’ve come to realise that NONE of my neighbours have washing lines (only us!) and we all have big enough gardens. Plus a local friend recently said that they tumble dry everything because they can’t stand seeing washing hanging around.

Is this no longer a thing? Has the world gone mad?? I live on top of a very windy hill in a sunny part of the UK - unless it’s raining washing usually dries in a couple of hours. I’m baffled as to why people wouldn’t take advantage of that!

Your neighbour is batshit

No at least one neighbour hangs washing out as well as us. I've never found dryers that can dry more than a few items at time so have given up on them.

dryers dry by wet washing weight. You just need the right sized dryer.

drspouse · 02/08/2025 08:39

We don't have a dryer!
Outside if dry, Lakeland heated airer if not.

We tumble dry all year round and don’t have a washing line. When we moved in, there was a line that stretched about 100 feet down the garden between 2 posts. It was one of the first things we removed.

I have never once seen washing in my neighbours’ gardens either. I can see into their gardens from our bedrooms at the rear. I think I love our tumble dryer as much some people love to peg out washing. I guess you either do or you don’t 🤷‍♀️

Why on earth would you do that?
Are you hay fever sufferers or just lazy?

I hang out my washing , I will miss summer once it’s to wet to put the washing out on the line , what a odd thing to say i would say that they should think about getting a line themselves smells so much fresher

Love hanging my washing out! Wouldn’t do anything else if the weather continues allow.
Dont have a tumble dryer.

People are weird.

I hang mine out as do two of my neighbours. However one side very very rarely puts hers on the line, but she's the busiest of all of us and out of the house a lot. So I presume that she doesn't want to either rely on the weather or have to come home at 10pm and fetch washing off the line. So she tumble dries it even on nice days to save herself time.

I wouldn't do it, and haven't even got a tumble drier, but can see how if one is young and very busy, that it might be a time saving option.

Not for me though, I love the smell of line dried!

not wanting to make my hayfever worse is weird? ooooookay

Fifthtimelucky · 02/08/2025 08:43

I hang out most of my washing (weather permitting). Ridiculous to consider it common! I don’t have a very long line, so I prioritise bed linen and large items of clothing and don’t hang out underwear/socks etc. They either hang indoors on an airer or go in the tumble dryer.

My daughter is in the process of buying a flat and we had the lease through this week. It dates to 1981, which is when it seems the original house was converted into flats, and does not allow any washing to be hung in the garden. I suppose that makes sense when there are 8 flats all using the same garden.

Thingyfanding · 02/08/2025 08:43

One of my neighbours hangs hers out in the front garden - I’m not so keen on that but she doesn’t have a back garden so I get it. It’s much better than tumble drying everything.
The sun bleaches out stains and helps to remove bacteria and other micro organisms so is a much more hygienic option too

SatsumaDog · 02/08/2025 08:44

I love hanging washing out. It smells much nicer. I don’t do it that often because I’m working and the weather is so unreliable I can’t often guarantee it won’t rain.

Nothing beats the smell of line-dried washing! When my DC were babies and had Terry nappies, (a while ago now - DS is 40 this year), my neighbour actually said to me that she loved to see a line full of nappies! And I love to have bed linen that has dried outside - even after iron8ng, it still has an “outdoor” smell. So I think your neighbour is very strange! Everyone I know has a washing line or whirligig. I hate it when winter comes and I have to put things on an airer to dry.

My kids are all little still (although only got one in nappies atm) and watching my cloth nappies dry on the line brings me immense joy.

This is so bizarre to me. The cost to you and the environment is crazy. You had a perfectly good line up and you took it down?? Genuinely, why?

VaccineSticker · 02/08/2025 08:46

Hang ours as soon as the weather permits The sun bleaches stains and smells, it’s better for the environment and on the pocket.

Oasisagiger · 02/08/2025 07:29

I don’t own a tumble dryer and always put my clothes on the washing line if the weather allows it. I actually get joy out of unloading the machine when the sun is shining and hanging it up 😂

Me too, there's something very satisfying in doing it...

PandaWriter · 02/08/2025 08:48

I don’t own a tumble dryer and air dry everything outside on days when no rain is forecast.

Mumofsoontobe3 · 02/08/2025 08:48

I must be common as muck, I see a speckle of sunshine and I'm running outside with my washing basket and pegs! I love my dryer but hate the running costs. I've never heard of someone finding it strange, I tend to meet my neighbours on either side first AM all trying to get the wash out to dry. I love admiring all our clean washing from the window 😳

CautiousLurker01 · 02/08/2025 08:48

What an odd comment - washing lines are more environmentally friendly (and thus cheaper) and air-dried linen smells fresher. I don’t have one ‘cos DH didn’t want a washing pole thing in the middle of the lawn when we had the garden relandscaped and because I am useless at keeping an eye on it/bringing it in before it rains so am happy with the less green option of a dryer. My neighbours (GPs, privately educated) happily put their laundry on a line. Nothing common about them!

Just because you don’t see her hanging her clothes on the line, doesn’t necessarily mean she’s tumble drying everything. She might put it on indoor line or clothes horse like me.

Antigonestoyspade · 02/08/2025 08:48

I'm surprised more people don't line-dry indoors.

I have a wall-mounted washing line in the utility room (it's 10 actual lines in total that stretch across the room from wall to wall near the ceiling) and dry nearly all my washing that way.

It's much easier than taking everything outside and I never have to worry about the weather. It dries really quickly, especially in the winter when the heating is on. And I've never had a problem with damp in the house in my 20+ years of drying clothes like that.

laundryjoy · 02/08/2025 08:49

Buried in the lease clause of my flat is no laundry hanging out but I have a large, covered balcony so its out there nearly year round, half my neighbours ignore this clause too it would seem! The other half ignore the "no fly tipping" sign by the communal bins. And I'm the common one, yeah right 🙄

Same it's about the only thing to enjoy about laundry!

GrumpyExpat · 02/08/2025 08:50

Everyone in my family (myself included) has a lot of pollen allergies. We never hang our laundry outside.
