Is hanging washing on the line not a thing anymore?

Interesting conversation with neighbour recently:

Him: ‘I see you like hanging your washing out to dry.’
Me: ‘Er, yeah. Doesn’t everyone?’
Him: ‘Well no, we think it’s a bit common.’

Now this was said tongue in cheek but I’ve come to realise that NONE of my neighbours have washing lines (only us!) and we all have big enough gardens. Plus a local friend recently said that they tumble dry everything because they can’t stand seeing washing hanging around.

Is this no longer a thing? Has the world gone mad?? I live on top of a very windy hill in a sunny part of the UK - unless it’s raining washing usually dries in a couple of hours. I’m baffled as to why people wouldn’t take advantage of that!

I absolutely do! Every day as we have a lot of washing. Some of my neighbours don't even though they have gardens and it's been nice weather. They must tumble dry everything which seems such a waste.

Thatcannotberight · 02/08/2025 08:28

We have a long line and a whirligig. Most people here hang their washing out, but I do know someone who's husband wouldn't let her hang their washing out. He used to drive her to the laundrette to dry it.

itsgettingweird · 02/08/2025 08:28

Mines always out of the weathers nice.

My neighbours too.

Recently I was hanging mine out and the 2 men either side of use were hanging there’s out and we chatted about how lovely it was to be able to do it and plans for summer etc.

i know it’s not for everyone but hanging out washing is always great for a neighbour catch up!

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 02/08/2025 08:28

Definitely line dry, as no tumble dryer, just a utility room (does that keep me in the common category lol) where the oil boiler is, so I put up a rack in there when line drying is not available. Tumble drying imo destroys fabric, is not economical or environmentally friendly, doesn't give clothing that great outdoor smell or bleach whites! Nan used a line, Mum did, proud to continue the tradition!

mambojambodothetango · 02/08/2025 08:29

If anything i think using a tumble dryer is common (I don't actually think that). Also anyone who tells you what you're doing is common is probably common themselves.

I don’t own a tumble dryer and always put my clothes on the washing line if the weather allows it. I actually get joy out of unloading the machine when the sun is shining and hanging it up 😂

Edited

Me too! I’m waiting for a load to finish now and can’t wait to hang it all out 😂

I’ve got a heat exchange pump tumble dryer so it’s cheap to run but I always line dry when possible. I’m planning on getting 3 loads dry today.
Bedding especially on the line as it just dries better.

Yeo my bedding is just at spin stage ready to hang out on a bit.

I’ll then enjoy a lovely cool shower later and hair wash (after sitting in garden and a hot sweaty walk!) before climbing into my fresh bed later and inhaling that wonderful fresh bedding smell!

Wolfpinkola · 02/08/2025 08:31

I do hang clothes out - people are so weird. It’s more common(ignorant) to waste resources drying clothes on a hot day

Bluetoothpaste · 02/08/2025 08:31

I live somewhere terribly naice. Middle class as middle class can be. 😆😆😆

Every single house in my street has a utility room with a tumble dryer, and every single house hangs their washing out to dry on sunny days.

They’d all be a bit surprised to be considered “common”. 😆

Especially as they are much too polite to ever use the phrase. 😆😆😆

isthesolution · 02/08/2025 08:31

Yup my washing goes outside. Dries quicker and smells better. I don’t have or want a tumble dryer.

Recycledblonde · 02/08/2025 08:32

All the posh people I know hang their washing outside because they’re very focused on being eco friendly. I’m off to hang mine out now, when we moved I chose not to get a tumble dryer.

Maria1982 · 02/08/2025 08:32

I do think there is a growing trend for people to use tumble dryers (and also a rise in houses with small/no gardens, at least where I live in the east of England ).

I think it’s very sad, tumble dryers are environmental disaster ! I hang mine up inside

CampingInTheSnow · 02/08/2025 08:32

I take it as a sign of my age that opening the curtains on a sunny morning now makes me think 'perfect drying weather' instead of 'perfect beer garden weather' 😂 I always hang our washing out when I can, as do our immediate neighbours, so we must all be common around here!

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 02/08/2025 08:34

All sensible folk hang washing out if weather permits. It's more environmentally friendly. If you are lucky enough to have a garden, why would you use a machine if mother nature can do the job for free and a little bit of extra effort? I find it one of the most irritating jobs in the world but it's preferable to my only alternative, which is clothes horses in the spare bedroom. It smells fresher too.

Echobelly · 02/08/2025 08:34

No at least one neighbour hangs washing out as well as us. I've never found dryers that can dry more than a few items at time so have given up on them.

Lookingforwardto2025 · 02/08/2025 08:34

I love the sight of clean clothes hanging on the line, even better if there is a good breeze and the sheets are billowing etc. So satisfying I could just sit and watch. I hope to hang three loads out today.

notthatoldchestnut · 02/08/2025 08:34

Absolutely yes to the washing being on the line!
your neighbour is a tosser

godmum56 · 02/08/2025 08:09

I don't hang my washing out because of the pollen issue.I wish I could though. I tumble dry because I won't dry stuff indoors unless I can't tumble dry it.

When DD was home last summer I had to dry her washing indoors for the same reason.

clary · 02/08/2025 08:35

I peg out all the time, as long as it’s not actually raining. In December, January too on what might be a bright and windy day.

Your neighbours are weird. Did they actually say it’s common? wtf is wrong with people.

Dearg · 02/08/2025 08:35

I love being able to hang the washing out, pants and all, when the weather is good. I judge by the weather forecast and next door - they always seems to get the timing right vis a vis hanging out or not.

I think it’s easier if you work from home or are retired though.

When I worked full time in an office I would have to tumble as I had little time to faff about with washing and could rarely trust the weather.

FlowerUser · 02/08/2025 08:36

Takes too much time to peg out and bring in.
Takes ages to dry, whereas the dryer takes 45 minutes.
We live near a main road and the filth on our house number plate is disgusting. I don’t want that dirt on my clothes.
I am severely allergic to grass pollen which clings to wet clothes and is brought into the house.
We have dozens of pigeons, blackbirds and jackdaws in our garden and I can’t run the risk of them pooing on the clothes.

PuppyMonkey · 02/08/2025 08:17

I never understand when people say they “put everything in the tumble dryer” as there are loads of items which can’t be tumble dried as they’d shrink etc. What do these people do with those things?

I do use the line in really good weather but tbh the usual British weather isn’t reliable enough (eg today looks like rain is coming) so it’s easier to leave it on the clothes horse in my back porch. Don’t have to worry about the rain ruining it when I’m out at work.

The horror at people leaving washing out on the line to get darked on. Shock

Its what I buy in the first place. My jeans, underwear, seasalt shirts, sweatshirts, t shirts, bedding....in fact most of my washing doesn't shrink. Apart from the lycra in my jeans and underwear, all the fibres are natural, cotton, linen, tencel etc. Some of my clothes, mostly sweaters can't be tumble dried but they are not "next to my skin" clothes so get washed way less often. Sweaters and the odd not tumble-able thing get dried on a rack in my bathroom. So no, in my wardrobe there aren't "loads of things" that can't be tumble dried and yes I do put, not everything, but most things. in the dryer. Oh and I don't iron much either.

NoNameisGoodEnough · 02/08/2025 08:37

You know what is common? Commenting on other people's common-ness! Honestly, people with any class would never dream of telling someone else they were a bit common.

And I love hanging washing out when I can. And I hang it out in the evening if I know it will be nice weather the following day as I don't want to be doing it at 6:45 in the morning before I go to work.

The thought of even thinking of telling my neighbour I thought they were common is just unbelievable.

Bikergran · 02/08/2025 08:38

No, it's very sensible, eco-friendly and normal. He's an idiot.

66babe · 02/08/2025 08:38

Wigtopia · 02/08/2025 08:04

And spider willies of course

You beat me to it
Washing being darked on and spider willies all night long
How common !
😂
Nothing better than having washing dried in clean free fresh air , why pay and crumple up your clothes when you can have it done for nothing 👍🏼
