Steamer for Clothes - distilled, purified or tap water?

I'm thinking of buying a handheld steamer - we live in a hard water area. Is there a difference between distilled and purified water? Is tap water just going to ruin it? It feels like it could be quite expensive?

We use water from our filter jug. We've been using it for 6 months (not solidly mind you) without any problems.
