Getting blood stains out of clothes

DD leaked through into her fave pyjamas and DH just stuck them through the wash. Usually I’d rinse and put something on to treat the stain. Now they’ve gone through a warm wash but also the tumble drier, so I don’t know if the stain will be set in or if there’s anything that can save them?

I'd try leaving in cold water overnight, then using a salt paste on the stain and washing on a cool wash. Might not get rid completely but may fade it enough to make them wearable again.

Pour salt directly on the stain, add a small amount of cold water and scrub.
Then leave to soak in cold water overnight. Should lift the stain out enough for you to whack it in a cold wash cycle with some vanish and be good as new

WildCats24 · 16/06/2025 18:06

As PPs have said above, try cold. Warm sets in the protein stains with blood. It may be too late now though…

MyRootinTootinBaby · 16/06/2025 19:32

Thanks, I’ve done the salt scrub and they’re now soaking. Nothing seemed to immediately happen with the scrub, but hopefully it will help overnight.

Would salt be a good go to as a first resort in future, before putting through the wash? I’m sure this won’t be the last time I need to do this, but at least I’ve always got salt in.

Put them out in the sun - it may bleach out the stain - I'm always amazed at what a day on the line on bright sun can do for stains!

Try soaking in cold water and salt overnight

Yes definitely, salt is great for blood stains

whoami24601 · 16/06/2025 19:40

If you soak immediately in cold water then that should get the blood out without needing anything else.

Ellenanora7 · 16/06/2025 19:41

My sister swears by windolene, her husband has terrible nose bleeds and she sprays his shirts with it and it comes out, I've never tried it myself though.

Can’t be immediately. Unfortunately already gone through hot wash and tumble dry!

Sprig1 · 16/06/2025 19:43

Hang them in the sun. It works wonders.

Seamoss · 16/06/2025 20:54

I had success with lemon juice, salt and sunshine

dontcomeatme · 16/06/2025 20:55

Cold water and washing up liquid always gets my blood stains out, then wash as normal.

Move22 · 16/06/2025 20:57

Soak in napisan

Yeah it works brilliantly - especially if the blood is still wet.

My DS had an unfortunate mishap a few years ago where he cut his head quite badly. We were living in military housing at the time and whilst pressing a towel to his head, I was on the phone to my Nana, frantically asking how to get blood out of carpets 😂😂😂🫣🫣🫣 That’s what she told me to do, and it worked a treat! No one would ever know there was once a claret puddle on the carpet when they came to do our move-out inspections 😂

iamgoingthere · 16/06/2025 22:10

Salt and cold water, overnight does the trick. Smaller items in a bucket, larger items like sheets in the bath.

Feathers72829292 · 16/06/2025 22:12

As an easy fix to suggest to your daughter for moving forward, I always run the stain under the tap whilst rubbing the fabric together with washing up liquid. Works wonders!

BlotAnExpert · 16/06/2025 22:19

Hydrogen peroxide worked on a fairly set in stain for me, took a few goes. It hadn't been on a hot wash though

MyRootinTootinBaby · 17/06/2025 07:34

I did the salt and soaked overnight, but there’s been no shift in the stain. Do I still stick it back in the washing machine?

I’ll work my way through the other ideas, worth having a go at them all. Could do with some sunshine!

Where would I get hydrogen peroxide? Does this bleach things?

OP posts:
WildCats24 · 17/06/2025 10:25

I’ve never seen hydrogen peroxide for sale in the UK. I’ve seen it in the US.

Hippolata · 17/06/2025 10:29

You can get Ace bleach for colours - that might work, but the warm wash/dry has rather put a spanner in the works!

Chemenger · 17/06/2025 10:31

You can buy hydrogen peroxide on Amazon, and I think you can buy it in pharmacies. It works really well on blood stains, I used to use old fashioned contact lens cleaner with peroxide on blood stains. It reacts with the haemoglobin (sp?) if I recall correctly.

Blobbitymacblob · 17/06/2025 10:33

Try a pharmacy for hydrogen peroxide.

What I would try is cover the stain in salt, and then just enough cold water to cover the salt. You want enough salt that it isn’t fully dissolved in the water and let it sit like that for a good few hours.

Then, try the hydrogen peroxide, first on a discreet part, and then dabbing at the stain. Put a white hanky or cloth behind as you work on the stain so it has somewhere to go.

In future, a cold wash and a bit of bio powder or vanish will probably sort it, and then dry in the sun. You can use salt but I find it’s not always necessary.

Bollynicks · 17/06/2025 10:38

Vanish spray or granules and in the washing machine at 60c worked for me when this happened.

Iliveonabighill · 17/06/2025 14:11

I've read previously that ammonia is incredible for getting out blood stains, even dried on ones
However, I won't have it in the house, because if accidentally combined with bleach, it gives off toxic chlorine gas, which can be really bad for lungs and can also cause death.
It's quite easy to buy tho, if you trust yourself and household members to use extreme caution!
