Getting blood stains out of clothes

MyRootinTootinBaby · 16/06/2025 17:31

DD leaked through into her fave pyjamas and DH just stuck them through the wash. Usually I’d rinse and put something on to treat the stain. Now they’ve gone through a warm wash but also the tumble drier, so I don’t know if the stain will be set in or if there’s anything that can save them?

My girls often do this, and the pink stuff spray stain remover gets them out. Spray, and it ll foam up. Leave for an hour then wash.

MaddestGranny · 17/06/2025 18:30

you can buy hydrogen peroxide at Boots or any chemist.
it may be behind the counter & you may have to ask.

Thanks, I’ve done the salt scrub and they’re now soaking. Nothing seemed to immediately happen with the scrub, but hopefully it will help overnight.

Would salt be a good go to as a first resort in future, before putting through the wash? I’m sure this won’t be the last time I need to do this, but at least I’ve always got salt in.

A cold water soak as soon as possible. I didn't know about salt. No one uses bleach nowadays it seems.

Now the clothing is dried it will be very unlikely you will get the blood stain out. Treat the area with vanish or something similar and if it hasn't come out after washing, do not let it dry, treat again and keep wet in a plastic bag until your next wash, and try again. The stain will eventually come out. As l've said, once you have dried the clothing , the stain has gone deep into the material..

MMUmum · 17/06/2025 18:40

I use neat washing liquid, ( Fairy, Persil etc) rubbed into the stain before putting item into a wash with a wash capsule, works most times

BiodegradableCutlery · 17/06/2025 18:48

It's a bit pricey and only seem to be able to get it in German packaging these days, but I swear by this stuff which is specifically for blood stains! Not sure if it would work once something has gone through the tumble dryer but could be worth a try

Dissolve 10g salt in 90 ml of cold water and soak the blood stain overnight or longer if you want then rinse in cool water before washing.
Reason for the specific salt solution is that it won’t break up the red cells releasing the pigment that causes the stain and “floats” the cells out of the fabric.
I worked in a hospital laboratory for 10 years so was well used to getting blood out of clothes!

J3001 · 17/06/2025 19:01

My go to is salt cold water and when wasshing put glycerin and washing up liquid on never used so much glycerin in my life

bookstack · 17/06/2025 19:14

You need a stain remover specifically for protein, Stain Devils do one, it works even on old stains. I used it on my carpet after the cat left a mouse to bleed out on it while I was away for the weekend. It came out beautifully.

Salt water for a while in a bucket when a fresh stain but not sure if this will work now washed and tumble dried.

Jellyslothbridge · 17/06/2025 19:26

No idea why but I read that the spit of the person whose blood it is (or close relative) helps get blood stains out. It seems to work!

I always cold soak blood with old fashioned soap or salt. Its to do with the protein in the blood.

Or and this is icky.. spit will get blood out (again something to do with proteins) obviously youd need to wash them after because they'd be spat on..

Id never hot wash them til id removed the stain if its blood

Lovely13 · 17/06/2025 19:31

Stain Devils do different products for various stains. Have found them effective. And, yes, to the power of sunlight. On a ski trip years ago, accidentally stuck cords of white coat into bowl of goulash 🥺 By end of day, they’d gone from red to snowy white. 😍

I’ve never seen hydrogen peroxide for sale in the UK. I’ve seen it in the US.

You can buy it cheaply in pharmacies!

Did you know that your own saliva will get rid of your own blood stains?

If it is only a little stain, ask the kids to suck it out. It also takes their minds off the cut or abrasion.

If a bit larger, you need a bit more spit. You can suck some cotton until wet and rub it on the blood stain.

You can do the same if you prick yourself with a pin or needle when sewing.

Works a treat.

Cheaper and safer to use your saliva if it is your blood.

If it is a small stain, spit on it. Anything larder, suck a piece of cotton or cloth and rub it, if it is your blood, make the kids suck it if it is their's.

Why go to all that trouble?

llizzie · 17/06/2025 19:48

Dear OP, please do not think I am hijacking your thread, but while on the subject of stain removal, did you know that milk gets rid of red wine stains?

Booboobagins · 17/06/2025 20:51

The most simple way is hot water with salt dissolved in it. I normally the affected area in the salt water for a few minutes then pop it in tge wash as normal.

The blood cells lose water due to osmosis in the salt water and can then be washed out if fabrics.

Sorted.

I've just seen the cold water and salt tip, but soaking overnight is a pain. Hot water with salt works a lot faster.

JungAtHeart · 18/06/2025 02:51

Vanish stick or spray works if they’re sprayed before washing. I’m not sure if it works once the stain is fixed though … 🙁

dEdiCatEdFeliNeEntHusiAst · 18/06/2025 05:35

Soak in milk overnight then wash as normal OR
Varnish stain remover soap bar. Wet both garment & bar then rub stain till coated. Leave for 20 minutes then spray with Pink stuff stain remover and wash as normal.

ElizaJ74 · 18/06/2025 07:47

Washing up liquid squidged in and leave for a day or 2 before washing again

Jeneva2025 · 18/06/2025 22:31

Try soaking in Napisan, if it won't fade the material too much. I've found it works wonders in a similar situation.

MyRootinTootinBaby · 20/06/2025 16:30

So I did the salt bath overnight, sprayed elbow grease on it as that’s what I usually do for stains and then banged it through a cool wash again. Most came out, but I repeated that process again and then dried it out in the sun all day while the weather is nice. There’s still a hint of a stain, but as it’s in the crotch it won’t be noticeable when worn and she’s much happier.

Thanks so much for the advice! I’m sure it won’t be the last time it happens, so I’ll keep the stain wet and soak it in salt first next time.

I used to keep a covered container filled with the salt solution in the utility room at that time of the month so that any bloodstained clothing could just be popped in to soak as soon as possible
