Toilet brushes - what am I missing

What is supposed to happen with toilet brushes ? If you use them to clean off skidmarks, surely they just get clogged up immediately with poo? Then sit in their little holder with poo on?

Will it clean the thick limescale which often adheres to the edges of a shower tray stone/resin coating be too soft?

So as far as I know it will do porcelain and glass. I've tried gently on the 'silver' door frames and that seemed to work but I suspect too much rubbing will scratch that. Anything too soft and I'd be worried about scratching but to be fair I assumed it would do that to the glass and it didn't so anything's possible!

The main thing is the stone and the surface need to be soaking wet before you use it

BogRollBOGOF · 01/05/2025 20:27

Team toilet brush.

I'd rather have a flushed brush sitting in a pot of bleachy water between uses than get through a shit-tonne* of cloths, scrubbers and disposable gloves filling the bin each week. I'd also rather use the handle of a brush above the waterline than trust a glove and plunge in.

Household containing not very fastidious teenagers who flush and dash, and alas "efficient" cisterns might use up less water, but are piss-poor* at doing their job well so scrubbing is often required.

When the offending teenagers are accused with sufficient evidence, it's easier to get them to wield the Harpic and toilet brush than it would be to make them don Marigolds.

As wasteful as it is, I use them once and throw it away. They are absolutely gross!!

busymomtoone · 03/05/2025 18:29

Tbrh · 30/04/2025 07:35

I've honestly only had that happen once and I threw it away. I don't think it's a common thing! What I really want to know is how people clean their toilet without one

Me too. I’m totally perplexed by this - do the non toilet brush people have magically instantly flushable clean poos?! Or supersonic Niagra falls style flush loose?! We have a healthy diet but absolutely need to bring the ( silicone) brush into use quite often. Then run it under next flush to clean.

Sprocket1 · 03/05/2025 18:37

i’m another one for citric acid
we have just changed from a septic tank to a bio digester so it’s important to use the right stuff
i make a solution of citric acid boiling water 20 mls eco washing up liquid and a few drops of tea tree.Works a treat on lime scale and the toilet brush stays perfectly white
Win Win no limescale and no dirty orange toilet brush

MarchingOnTogether · 03/05/2025 18:37

I dont have one, I find them gross!
I use spray and toilet roll to clean the seat and rim, then bleach does the rest, never had poop marks that can't be shifted with a squirt of bleach!
We live in a hard water area so sometimes the edge of the rim needs a scrub with limescale cleaner, for that I use a limescale cleaner and washing up sponge (and bin it afterwards)

BlueFlowers5 · 03/05/2025 19:05

I put limescale remover in the toilet bowl every day.

Frillysweetpea · 03/05/2025 19:16

Why is this such a big deal? I put bleach or toilet cleaner all around the pan and below the waterline and leave the brush in the water whilst the product works for about 10 mins, so the brush is cleaned every week. I rinse out the holder, spray with anti bac and rinse again. Then I clean the WHB (where I've rinsed the holder) with anti bac and rinse that all off.

BeeCucumber · 30/04/2025 10:55

I have a stunt Joseph Joseph silicone one on show. The toilet brush I actually use is hidden in the cupboard of shame in the bathroom.

I thought stunt pineapples were funny - this is hilarious!!

Doitrightnow · 03/05/2025 19:34

I do hold it under the flow when I flush but tbh it doesn't get all the poo off. I just never think about it. It's a toilet brush, it does the job, I'm expecting it to have toilet germs etc on it. I'm not eating with it.

I have a silicone one but it works much less well and doesn't really look much cleaner.

Fizbosshoes · 03/05/2025 19:48

I use a toilet brush - just for cleaning the toilet - if a jug of water poured down the loo, doesn't get rid of everything. I clean the rest of the toilet (seat, flush, rim etc) with disposable wipes that are described as flushable, but I throw them in the bin
I didn't realise they were allegedly so offensive /vile/grim/disgusting until I joined MN.

I also didn't realise so many people hated ensuite bathrooms either til I came here...

localnotail · 03/05/2025 20:33

I used to pour bleach/ toilet cleaner into the loo regularly and stick the brush into the water to clean. But yes, regular brush used to have bits of poo on it. Use silicon brush now, but also clean the toiler about once a week with one of those tablets you chuck in/ scrub it with sponge (using gloves of course),

localnotail · 03/05/2025 20:35

Don't understand people wiping the poo off the toilet with their hand using paper. That's kind of gross.

Regular UK houses are too small to have a decent en-suite, its just a tiny crammed room with toilet and shower that gets damp and is not very usable.

celticprincess · 03/05/2025 20:40

Well for this saying bleach doesn’t work, I find it does. I pour it under the rim and around the top of the bowl around the sides and some into the water. Let it sit for a while - usually until I next need the loo - and any skid marks or similar are gone. I do struggle with the limescale though. I’ve got a limescale remover toilet duck liquid though that I try now and again. I don’t get a massive build up though. Taps are worse, and shower head . I’ve also got the spray bleach foam that’s not as strong as actual bleach that cover the loo with and wipe down with loo roll. I don’t use anything reusable. Well the exception is a plunger. I’ve got an autistic child who uses way more loo paper than she should, and despite flushing at least once midway through a bum wipe, she does often block the loo. So the plunger gets used. But then rinsed in the toilet’s clean water as it flushes.

I did try those loo brushes with the ‘flushable’ ends but I wasn’t convinced about them flushing just like with the wipes so I’d usually bin them.

I mean, is it not hardly different from wiping off your arse though?

Well my arse is just that, my own lovely arse - not some poo infested waste water. I guess I just dont enjoy touching poo beyond what is absolutely necessary.

GreenShadow · 03/05/2025 20:54

Toilet brush here - but not for poo. That soon goes away by itself.
We just use it for limescale.

How interesting.

  1. You never get skidmarks in the toilet?
  2. How do you clean limescale with brush only? I have to use vinegar and sometimes limescale remover. Brush and sponge wont hack it!
selffellatingouroborosofhate · 03/05/2025 21:20

I buy the Harpic with acid in it to destroy the limescale and use a loo brush to scrub. Hold it under the flush to rinse it off afterwards.

My loo is separate from my bathroom so there's no issue with faecal bacteria aerosoling onto toothbrushes/flannels/the basin/etc.

Charlotte244 · 03/05/2025 21:47

Flush the toilet with the brush held in the bowl …

It would take a pretty significant medical issue for me to be wiping the backside of my 12 or 14 year old...

I also wipe my backside immediately after the event rather than finding it crusting a few hours later.

I don't think DSs' gut bacteria have ever forgiven him for the multiple food allergies early in life, plus both DCs have executive function issues. Even black Harpic baulks at the task, so a flimsy bit of Andrex is definitely not up for the challenge.

PhotoFirePoet · 03/05/2025 22:22

I agree with the OP. I use mine to clean the toilet only, which is never poop stained as that I spray with cleaner and remove either loo paper and flush after the ahem, pre-flush. When I was with my ex, I felt so ill trying to clean any poop off the toilet brush he insisted on using 🤢 I would never use mine to remove poop, only to scrub round the bowl with after its been covered in toilet cleaner for the prerequisite amount of time.

Theeffingcleaner · 03/05/2025 23:12

I am a private house cleaner and also work in a dental practice as a cleaner in the evenings, I would recommend if you have a traditional toilet brush that sits in a long container plastic or stainless steel one keep it in either I part bleach/1/2 water or best is to put Zoflora to cover the brush itself.as iIt keeps it clean and stops it from smelling, after you have cleaned toilet, flush brush with water from toilet before putting it back in its container. I change water every few days for it to be more hygienic. I do this in my own home and have now passed this on to my clients also to family and friends. The silicone ones are worst as they don’t clean properly at the bottom of the pan, I much prefer bristle ones as they do thoroughly clean the toilet.I either use bleach around the toilet or limescale toilet cleaner. On the seat itself I spray Zoflora and leave for a good 5mins so I know it has been anti backed and then with a damp cloth wipe it all off that way I know it is all thoroughly clean

stayathomer · 03/05/2025 23:18

Another that thinks the way you do op, I do get them now but have ended up throwing them out for reason you described (skid mark and poo all over brush, rinsed in flushes but poo still there). People who don’t have that problem are very lucky!!
