Toilet brushes - what am I missing

What is supposed to happen with toilet brushes ? If you use them to clean off skidmarks, surely they just get clogged up immediately with poo? Then sit in their little holder with poo on?

It's what I prefer in my own home. You are patronising and rude. I don't care what you do.

I also wouldn’t mix and match things - if it’s for the bathroom it stays there.

But to say @rosemarble is being ‘patronising and rude’ is wildly out of place. She’s been polite as far as I can see. Just because someone has a different opinion to you doesn’t mean you can call them patronising and rude.

Tooearlytothink · 30/04/2025 16:03

Cap of zoflora or similar in water in the holder was what I did for years before DD. Also use it when cleaning the toilet so it gets all lathered up with bleach/cleaner then. If you don’t have one, what do you expect people to do if they do leave skidmarks?

Then you have to have the seat up when you flush. Not for me.

But the loo is empty at this point. You’re flushing an empty loo to clean the brush. There may be washing up liquid or other loo cleaner in it.

No its not.

She said "Can you explain.
How are you actually using your bathroom if you find the thought of taking a roll of kitchen paper into the room, using a few sheets and then taking it back to the kitchen horrifying?"

Acting like I'm being ridiculous. She wasn't actually asking me, she was trying to mock me.

And then said "This is why we clean the food preparation area and our hands before preparing food, and why we wash our hands after going to the loo." as if I'm a moron who doesn't wash her hands before cooking or using the toilet.

If you don't think that's rude, that's your view, but I do.

But you have put emphasis on words that she didn’t. You have read that emphasis, I didn’t read it. You are doing something she doesn’t and she is asking you to explain why. That’s fine.

I’m not sure she was ‘acting’ anything.

I also didn’t read anything mocking in her statement or question.

I do the same as you. If I take kitchen roll in the bathroom I wouldn’t place it back in the kitchen. I mean, I’m not sure what you’d even do with kitchen roll in the bathroom anyway!

And I use different cleaning things for each room so no need to swap rooms.

But I really didn’t read anything in her comments other than a generic ‘I don’t do this, why do you?’

But then you were rude to her 😵‍💫.

I don’t like to see unwarranted rudeness and the more people that push back on it the better in my opinion.

But she was rude to me in my opinion so that is what I was doing. All over this site, you have a nice conversation with someone and someone else has to send a snarky reply.

Do you really think it's polite to tell another adult "this is why we wash our hands after going to the toilet"? and I wasn't adding emphasis, I was highlighting the words that made it sound rude.

TweetingHurricane · 30/04/2025 16:46

I can’t imagine not having one. I use it then flush again to clean it then cover in bleach, put in pot.

It’s not something that needs to be perfectly clean

Alondra · 30/04/2025 16:51

Toilet brushes exist so we can brush the skid marks water itself doesn't get rid of. Small particles of poo rarely stick to the brush and you always rinse it under the running water when you flush the toilet again anyway.

The best way to prevent limescale from developing is to splash a bit of bleach in the toilet and leave it sitting there for a couple of hours or longer if you can - just before going to work or whatever time it suits you. It will not only leave the bowl disinfected but limescale free on the bits you see, and also on the bits you don't see.

Bleach doesn't do anything to limescale apart from discolour it so it doesn't show.

I have those Joseph Joseph silicone brushes & they get under the rim.

To clean, I squirt bleach into the toilet bowl and leave the brush sitting in it for a couple hours

That is what I do, I give the bowl a scrub then I flush. Then I pour in some bleach and leave the brush soaking while I am out.

Crazyey · 30/04/2025 17:48

Tbrh · 30/04/2025 07:35

I've honestly only had that happen once and I threw it away. I don't think it's a common thing! What I really want to know is how people clean their toilet without one

Gloves and a sponge. Get right in there under the waterline and scrub the bowl. Can't beat it!

Thingyfandingi · 30/04/2025 17:54

I'm surprised how many people do not know this.

Firstly flush the toilet, and make sure tissue has flushed away and only offending skid marks are left.

Pick up brush and then scrub - then flush again with the toilet brush in the toilet - repeat action if necessary. The brush does not flush away as it is too big but you can hold it if you wish.

Put toilet brush back into the holder - personally I squeeze a little bit of toilet cleaner inside the holder for freshness.

I replace the whole thing pretty regularly but there are never bits of poo or anything stuck on the brush or left in the holder.

Motheroffive999 · 30/04/2025 18:01

Don't use them , they make me gag

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 30/04/2025 18:02

Silicone ones are easier to clean. Whether or not I have a silicone or brush one, I put toilet cleaner or bleach in the loo and give the brush a good dunk in it. Then I flush holding the brush under the water and it’s clean. Empty and wash the holder regularly too. It’s not really hard to do.

So do you rinse them in the toilet itself? And never clean them anywhere else

A silicone one id just clean in the bathroom sink tbh once in a while. I promise it will be fine... Just clean the sink afterwards.

Or use a bucket of some sort to soak and clean sometimes.

I stick a disposable glove on my hand and scrub away.
Toilet brushes are so disgusting.

This is exactly what I do. You can get under the rim, below the water line and even a bit round the bend. It's much more thorough than a brush.

ThisUsernameIsNowTaken · 30/04/2025 20:35

Bemused by the amount of people who are grossed out by the thought of owning a toilet brush yet are happy to put their hand in the toilet to clean off poo stains 🤮 .

ThisUsernameIsNowTaken · 30/04/2025 20:37

As for limescale - citric acid is your friend.

Gloved hand. Glove then gets turned inside out when taken off, goes in the bin & hands get washed thoroughly. Simples.
I'd sooner throw a blue disposable glove in the bin, than throw out hard plastic toilet brushes.

I don't know about anyone else, but I also sanitise the tap when I've washed my hands, even though I turn the tap on with my left hand because my right hand is my 'dirty' hand (I've taken the glove off my right hand with my left hand).
If I then go into the kitchen to make tea or whatever, I wash my hands again so they're 'kitchen-clean'.

I used to be obsessive about hygiene, but I've relaxed a lot!

I use a toilet brush for cleaning, I put bleach in and leave for 10 mins then scrub the bend with it, I then flush and rinse in the flush water. There is only me who uses it.

I use tissue to remove any marks, then a couple of times a weeks clean the toilet bowl as per @theressomanytinafeysicouldbe's method.

So do you rinse them in the toilet itself? And never clean them anywhere else

You swish the brush around any dirt, then keep the bristles in the water while you flush to rinse everything away. You can then put it back in the pot where you’ve got some toilet cleaner. Plus you’ve got the cleaner from the pot on the brush when you use it. Everything fresh and much better than the silicone ones for me - they seem to miss limescale.
