Why do my glasses get dirty so bloody often?

I always seem to be cleaning my glasses and I never see anybody else doing it as much as me. No, they really are dirty. It’s not just me. Please give me your top 10 glasses cleaning tips (I mean reading glasses not drinking glasses).

Varifocals. Greasy skin, mucky pup, been a speccy bam for nearly 50 years. 🤓

Wash 'em once or even twice a day (after showering, then again if I've cooked/sweated) by just touching the top of the washing up liquid bottle and rubbing gently with fingers, then sluicing, then drying with a clean cotton napkin. You do need to use a tiny dod of w-up liquid then really rinse it or it just smears around.

Worst thing for it: the sprays and cloths recommended by the opticians - have NEVER got clean glasses that way.

Speccy bam - not been called that in years 😆

Everyone throw their hands up and declare WE ARE THE SPECCY BAMS!

The little plastic nose pads get filthy , I use an ultrasonic cleaner with a dash of washing up liquid ( don;t know if it's right or wrong ) the filth just wafts out !

I've been looking at these, can you recommend the one you have?

Glammar · 01/04/2025 21:01

I've never had this problem before in the past until I got new all singing and dancing varifocals. They have anti glare, and god knows what else and they are always filthy. I don't touch them, they somehow get make up all over them and are always smudged. I use a tiny blob of fairy liquid on them and clean them that way.

They are a complete PITA

Deathraystare · 03/04/2025 12:40

Oh they cannot be as mucky as mine. Oils from make up, sometimes bits of mascara too. I went to get my eyes tested. Normally I do not wear eye make up, but I forgot and my mascara marked all the lenses we tested!!

I shall get some wipes from Poundland if they have them today!!

Story - I had a good friend who would often come round and work with me at my house. My husband thought she was nice but didn’t know her that well. I was away and she asked if she could use my home office one day and he said of course. Anyway. Got to about lunch time and he said I’m going out to get a sandwich from the butcher, they’re really good so she said hell yeah and went with him. They had one of the roast dinner cobs each sat in the car. He texted me later and said I can see why you like Katy so much - you gotta love a girl with gravy on her specs 😆

My eyelashes seem to pick up moisturiser on my face and dump it on my glasses. I’m continuously looking out through fog.

noblegiraffe · 03/04/2025 19:34

Trying to clean mine with a cloth (or more likely whatever top I'm wearing) just smears the grease. I run mine under a warm tap and then dry them with a towel (no soap needed) and that cleans them perfectly.

myplace · 03/04/2025 19:40

Apparently washing up liquid strips the coatings.

I use toilet soap- not the posh moisturising kind. Hot water run over them, soap your hands, then the lenses. Rinse with hot water. They dry really fast because of the heat.

They still get mucky quickly, but at least they are clean every morning.

myplace · 03/04/2025 19:41

And mine get dirty where my inner eyebrow touches them

Glasses fit differently according to fashion. Letter box ones stood away from the face and stay clean. The current bigger lens (great for varifocals) sit against the cheekbones and eyebrows.

I bloody love this thread

ITS NOT JUST ME

Oh, OP, it's definitely not just you... This thread couldn't be more timely for me! Two days ago I was feeling embarrassed of my dirty, old (more on this later) glasses because I wet to the optician to get a new prescription. I live in a fairly posh little town and was feeling so self-conscious 😅

Excuse me if I derail the thread but am I the only one who wears dirty and old glasses? I've been wearing the same pair since 2013: is this common? I know I need to change them, I know.

How old are your glasses?

springbringshope · 03/04/2025 20:02

Oh my god me. I wipe them. I don’t touch them. Next minute they have smudged. It’s not my lashes as it’s usually on the outside. I can see every little smudge. Drives me mad

NerdyBird · 03/04/2025 20:18

I swear the plastic frame glasses get dirtier than metal! I think it’s oils from skin/eyelashes that is my main problem. However, I do agree the current cloths are rubbish. I’ve got a really old one that gets my glasses cleaner than any newer one, but can’t seem to find anything like it!

BlackSheepThisYear · 03/04/2025 21:37

If you are going to wash your lenses then do not use too hot or too cold water - the anti reflection coatings do not like extremes of heat. Use tepid water only. No washing up liquid. No soap. No dettol floor wipes (yes, I have seen this!)
And cheap anti reflection coatings will get greasy and smeary. You can get extra clean coatings which are fab! Cost a bit more but are amazing and worth the extra £20!

Mine don't touch my face except for the 'arms' and the nose cushions .
My RL glasses have the transition lenses all singing'n;dancing .
I use those pre packed optical wipes for them

My work glasses are varifocal and they get manky but no coatings to ruin on them

Mens 100% cotton hankies. M&S, Matalan, John Lewis etc. I got mine from Amazon.

Edit - you could get the womens version but the mens are satisfyingly large and unfiddly (as usual).

MurdoMunro · 04/04/2025 12:29

My man is neither large or unfiddly…oh…wait…I think I read that wrong 😆
