Laundry still drowning?

MyLemonWriter · 15/03/2025 13:18

A few months ago we started to re-wear clothes that weren't dirty. Our laundry halved. We have also been trying to hang items out in the air. Again we are seeing a reduction. Freeing up valuable time and helping the environment.

How old are the kids? I don't think that they can be particularly reliable judges of acceptable filth levels, do you? At what point do you intervene?

They range from 5 to 15. I think they are pretty sensible. If and when they start to smell Ill have a word and ask them to change

Sorry OP, I’m all for rewearing clothes until they’re dirty or smelly, and I don’t wash jeans until they can practically stand up on their own… but not changing underwear every day is absolutely frickin grim.

I look forward to your “SOS I’ve got fanny rot” post.

Hmm. So the kids can rewear underwear until it can be smelt. I think you may be getting a knock on the door before then and I'm not sure 'we're cutting down on laundry' is the widely accepted excuse you think it is. 😬

I wouldn't let them smell and the school uniforms will be washed if necessary tonight

Now I know this thread is a joke

It isn't -I hope not to have to wash blazers and skirts?

I'm sorry but this is all kinds of wrong!! Maybe the blazer doesn't need washing so often but skirts and trousers do. I also hope your 15 year old isn't a girl having to rewear knickers. Although it's just as bad for boys

Sosoftandfluffycat · 21/03/2025 17:06

They need to learn when young that underwear is changed daily. I can't imagine future partners are going to be thrilled at old smelly pants.
Saying that, I'm sure you're just having a laugh...please?

Not having a laugh, but will certainly take on board your comments.

@offmynut Your childhood sounds traumatic and I’m not surprised you wash your clothes and linen so often.

I have a thing about having enough clean underwear because as a child I only had 2 and was constantly having to handwash them. I swear I have about 40 pairs of pants so I never run out, even though I wash them frequently.

I had the same thing, I remember have to handwash the same pair of socks and knickers every night and hope they'd be dry the next morning for school. I too have far too much underwear and socks now!! It was really grim growing up like that

Glad you're having a bit of a rethink. It's all well and good not to wash unnecessarily but you seem to have gone a bit overboard with the idea!!

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 22/03/2025 12:47

No amount of washing would make me or my family wear our underwear more than once, sorry op but that’s just grim. Surely if you just do a load a day at least, you’ll be on top of it. I wash everything clothes, pjs, tea towels after one use except our coats, bedding is done weekly without fail and towels and bath mat twice a week. You just need to get into a good routine.

BruisedNeckMeat · 22/03/2025 13:15

No. I don’t believe it.

Nor do I to be honest 😂 If you have the choice to be clean or be smelly why would you choose to be grim? Even if you washed nothing else the family's wash just for socks and undies changed daily would only be one load a week.

Unless you're the 22 and counting mum lol 🤣

ChinaChina · 22/03/2025 13:43

Sometimes I only wash pillowcases and the sheet and leave the duvet cover to reduce washing.

Sosoftandfluffycat · 22/03/2025 13:52

There's surely a middle ground here. But better to err on the side of washing too much than not enough. Nobody wants their kids to be the butt of other kids calling them smelly and not wanting to be near them.

WhenICalledYouLastNightFromTesco · 22/03/2025 20:11

I think the only time I've ever reworn underpants was when I was much younger, single and ended up at a stranger's house for the night 🤣.

I'll wear jeans and hoodies several times before washing, but I'll change t-shirts, underpants and socks daily.

Edited because I can't read clearly. I thought someone commented that they washed their towels every two weeks, but they wash them twice a week - makes much more sense 🤣.

I've ended up crashing over places unexpectedly. But yesterday's pants get put on inside out!

YoungSoak · 22/03/2025 20:39

OP you’ve gone too far the other way. You need to wash your drawers after every wash. Think of the skid marks. Underwear is small, they won’t create huge loads of laundry.

Edited to add: I’ve got pretty low standards when it comes to laundry. I change my bedsheets every fortnight and rewear most clothes more than once if they pass the sniff test but clean jocks everyday are essential

Awakeatnite · 22/03/2025 20:41

Well, assuming you aren’t rolling around in dirt, synthetic fibres will still make you sweat so they get all gross after a few hours. I don’t expect that most people can wear clothes more than once

Awakeatnite · 22/03/2025 20:52

do you reuse toilet paper as well 😂

Normallynumb · 25/03/2025 16:01

I’ll rewear things until I consider them dirty( not long as I’m messy!) I’ll change sheets and pillowcases weekly, but not duvet.. but I’d never wear knickers twice
its not as if they take up much space, and certainly with little ones/ teens you need to enforce this
There is a happy medium!
