My dirty room is my dark secret

Hi guys

I'm feeling really low and overwhelmed and just feel like i need to get it out. I've always been a messy person my childhood home was never particularly tidy with busy parents who both work full time. Now I'm an adult with my own home, my and dh both work full time (I work from home) and while I manage to keep the shared spaces (living room/kitchen/bathroom) clean everyday and u keep my DD(5) room tidy. My office/walk in wardrobe is always a tip. It's awful I have to climb over stuff to get in and I need to work there every day. Im so ashamed, i wpuld die if anyone saw it. And even if my husband goes in (to check the radiator or something i feel such shame about him seeing it though he never says anything) The drawers and shelves are all overflowing with clothes, there are clothes/papers/hangers all over the floor. Old cardboard boxes and rubbish piled under the desk (often as I prioritise cleaning the shared areas I will dump things in my room out of sight of everyone else). In order to get it clean I would need at least 2 full days and with working full time and havng a child etc it just feels impossible. I've done it before but it always goes back to this disgusting state. I feel so useless that I cannot manage to keep a genuinely tidy house the way others seem to. I decided today that I would start it on my break and cleaned out one drawer and then sat down and cried for 30 mins before I had to go back to work. It just feels hopeless

Ah OP. You have a Monica cupboard. Monica's amazing, she is not broken.

This room does not define you. Maybe start by pulling out rubbish and clothes for recycling. Don't try to finish a whole drawer even, just easy wins wherever you see them to get the volume down.

I can totally relate to your private space being the place everything that doesn't have a home goes to die. It's a pain, it's not a personal failing. Please please give yourself some grace. You're doing so much and beating yourself up over the tiny percentage that's not perfect.

This!!

It’s no reflection on you.

Do 5 mins when you can. one drawer, one corner. Keep chipping away!

Late to this party but love your updates, OP! Massive well done. It's really hard when you're so busy. I'm very much the same, really struggle to keep up with everything (plus live with messy buggers lol).

When I do get on top of an area, I find "don't put it down, put it away" is handy for keeping it reasonable. X

You mentioned clean and dirty clothes were mixed together. Do you have a laundry basket for dirty clothes? That would stop them getting mixed up.
I wouldn't put part worn clothes back in the wardrobe or drawers. In our house they go on a hook on the back of the bedroom door if they can br hung up or folded but left on the lid of the laundry basket if they don't hang up easily.

The reason the dirty and clean clothes were mixed in drawers was not for lack of a laundry basket but more because if somebody was coming over to stay I would be terrified that they would accidentally open that door and see the room so before they would arrive I would frantically scoop everything up off the floor and just stuff it into random drawers or parts of the wardrobe with doors so that the room outwardly looked OK . I was doing this for a long time so everything became musty.
I had a small rotation of clothes that I would wash and wear but mostly I stopped opening the drawers at all as it upset me.

I cannot tell you how nice it is to get up in the morning, have a shower and walk into a tidy wardrobe full of clean clothes that actually fit me..... it might sound like a small thing but I get emotional even thinking about it.

isnt it just so bloody liberating?

Im just now in the process of swapping all my coat hangers over to the velvet covered ones - OMG the difference is bringing me so much joy it's daft . Clothes are hanging just beautifully and not crushed

It might be worth getting some storage boxes for the shelves

Housekeeping is essential for maintaining a clean, organized, and comfortable environment, whether at home, in hotels, or in workplaces. Good housekeeping improves safety, reduces stress, and enhances productivity. It involves regular cleaning, decluttering, and proper waste management. Attention to detail and consistency are key to effective housekeeping. A well-maintained space not only looks appealing but also promotes better health and hygiene. Prioritizing housekeeping creates a more pleasant and efficient living or working space.

Thanks to the compassion and support the last few months have been amazing. I managed to keep the room clean for a while and the impact of that meant I also made other positive steps with healthy eating and fitness. Unfortunately things have slipped a lot in the last 3 weeks and the room is attrocious again 😢 I posted about it here:

Hopefully I can get things back to a positive state again

Hi OP, thanks for coming to give an update! It’s totally natural to slip, but it’s great to hear the inroads you have made. I know how hard it is to make positive changes so well done you!!

i am sure you can get back on track with the room. Do you remember how fast you turned the whole thing around last time? And I bet it’s not as bad as it was back then! And you have practice this time!

take a breath, set a day aside and get it sorted! You can do it!!!!!
