How difficult do you find changing your bed?

ICanBuyMyOwnFlowers · 04/03/2025 09:35

I'm 55 and changing my Superking bed is more than a workout for me. I honestly need a lie down afterwards! I'm also getting divorced due to infidelity and it would be good to get rid of the memories. But what size do I go for? I'm not actively looking for someone else as I'm only 8.5 months post D Day, however I hope that at some point in my future I may find someone. A double would be enough for just me (and the occasional child (youngest is 15 so it's not common)) but I do wonder that a king might be a more sensible purchase.

I don't have any issues changing a double, but worry that a King will still be too much. Need advice please.

Get a king size as a double is quite small for people these days. Are you physically restricted by an injury or a health condition in any way? It’s just a bed change so I think on the whole while it’s a bit of a chore doing the duvet, I’m not sure it’s a workout!

I have a disabled friend who puts a flat sheet between the duvet and the fitted bottom sheet, then she only changes the duvet cover every three weeks and the flat and bottom sheet and pillow cases weekly. Reduces the exertion with the duvet cover.

Chasingsquirrels · 04/03/2025 09:44

Is it the bed or the duvet cover?
If the cover, then just have a smaller duvet.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 04/03/2025 09:45

Have you tried this method OP? DM has a shoulder injury and can't shake a duvet, this is how she does it.

People keep recommending the coverless duvets to me - but I'm not struggling with making my bed so I've kept away from buying one. I have a double bed, I downsized from a King when I moved because a king sized bed meant I couldn't walk around the bed (or get off either side). It's fine just for me and the dog.

salemcooper · 04/03/2025 09:47

I think it's common to have a sort of quilt in the US instead of a duvet. You wash the whole quilt. Could that be an option?

Imgoingtobefree · 04/03/2025 09:47

I agree with @Chasingsquirrels I sleep in a double bed but sleep under a single duvet.

mondaytosunday · 04/03/2025 09:49

King size bed. And it's changing to the duvet cover for me (though the last corner of the fitted sheet always feels like a tug of war). It was my late husbands job to do the duvet.
Worse idea is bunk beds - nightmare changing the top bunk

RIPVPROG · 04/03/2025 09:50

We have a super king, I change it as much as DH does. It's more difficult than the double in the spare room but not enough that I'd downsize it. You could just get a king-size duvet, that's the difficult bit not the sheets

loropianalover · 04/03/2025 09:52

We have a super king also, it’s a complete pain to change and dress everything but I’d never downsize! I love the space.

beadystar · 04/03/2025 10:05

My bed is against three walls so it's a faff to change, climbing all over it. I buy extra deep sheets so there's a bit more room to tuck everything in. Also, when I strip it, I turn the duvet cover inside-out and button it before washing. That way, it's ready to just flip over the duvet the next time it's used.

Same here, I've got rheumatoid arthritis and so much easier to change single duvet cover.
Also I used to find that double duvet would overlap the sides of the bed and end up more on one side than the other.
I prefer the single because it just rests on top and I feel less restricted

HappyHolidai · 04/03/2025 10:15

I have a double (just me plus cats) and that's usually fine.
I have been unwell and I struggled at first to change the duvet cover: needed to rest the whole of the day after the first time, though things have improved. In normal times I can change it no problem.

boobybum · 04/03/2025 10:15

I think quite a few people have two single duvets on their super king which makes changing the bedding easier and also means that there is no fighting over the duvet if you share the bed. I’ve also seen that some people even have two single mattresses on a super king bed frame which I guess would make changing the bottom sheet/s easier and they put a super king mattress topper on to try and make the gap less noticeable.

Is it? Has the size of a standard double changed?

GreenCandleWax · 04/03/2025 10:24

The trouble with a larger duvet than the bed size is that where it hangs down over the sides of the bed, it can feel too heavy from its weight.

This is brilliant. Thank you so much.😃

PineappleCoconut · 04/03/2025 10:31

I've never mastered the roll method for duvet covers

But if I have to do it alone, I use a mattress corner lifter tool and beach towel clips to hold the duvet into the corners while I match up the other sides. You can carefully shape the duvet with them on too, just don't do it too vigorously as you might end up hitting yourself with the plastic clip Blush

The size of the people has changed!

pingster · 04/03/2025 11:01

We've got a cover less duvet and it's amazing. Really light but also very warm and you just stick the whole thing in the washing machine and it's dry within a few hours. Is also has quilting to keep the inside in place so much easier to make the bed - just a quick shake rather than having to realign the inside with the cover.

Shintoland · 04/03/2025 11:01

I can do a king fine - I put it off because it feels like a big job but it actually takes less than 5 mins. I'm 5'3". I find little difference between doing my king size and my son's double. I can imagine a super king might be harder as it's significantly wider than my arm span, but I haven't tried it. With a king size I can hold both the bottom corners and shake to flatten it.

Coverless duvets mystify me, they just look like so much extra washing.

warningairbag · 04/03/2025 11:05

We have a superking with 2 separate mattresses. DH's one is firmer than mine. They are supposed to be zipped together but salesman told us most people don't bother. We don't. It's fab. means I can turn the mattresses very easily. I can change duvet cover ok but if I couldn't I would certainly go a la Germans/Swedes etc and sleep under single duvets.

Frankley · 04/03/2025 11:09

I was finding it hard to change duvet cover so I've gone back to sheets and blankets.
All so easy to wash and handle.

Rhymetimegopo · 04/03/2025 11:11

I'm disabled and struggling more and more with this. I have a double currently, only me in bed though it was great when dc were younger and needed to get in. I was discussing with dd last week when I come to change beds I'll probably opt for a single (I doubt I'll date again) because of the changing the bed (especially the bottom sheet) as I don't like asking dc to have to do it. If there was potential to date again I'd probably opt for a double in your situation.

cramptramp · 04/03/2025 11:18

I'm the same OP. I'm in my 60's. I buy sheets a size bigger to make it easier and I now have a cover less duvet. Haven't tried to wash it yet though so hoping it fits in the machine. If my husband dies before me I think I'm going to get a single bed. I can sleep quite happily in one.

RockGirl · 04/03/2025 14:49

Just get two single duvets for your superking.
