How difficult do you find changing your bed?

I'm 55 and changing my Superking bed is more than a workout for me. I honestly need a lie down afterwards! I'm also getting divorced due to infidelity and it would be good to get rid of the memories. But what size do I go for? I'm not actively looking for someone else as I'm only 8.5 months post D Day, however I hope that at some point in my future I may find someone. A double would be enough for just me (and the occasional child (youngest is 15 so it's not common)) but I do wonder that a king might be a more sensible purchase.

I don't have any issues changing a double, but worry that a King will still be too much. Need advice please.

a double is quite small for people these days

Is it? Has the size of a standard double changed?

No, but the size of people has!

MarchingintoSpring · 04/03/2025 19:11

Easy. Takes me five minutes max.

cakeybird · 04/03/2025 19:18

always use the burrito method for the duvet cover.

also someone on MN had a good tip - change the pillow cases and sheet but turn the duvet cover over - you will get another week out of it. This way you only have to change the duvet cover every other time. it is so good for timesaving!

MyrtleLion · 04/03/2025 19:26

We have a king with very deep bottom sheets. We have a super king duvet to.stop fights about duvet-hogging. We use the burrito method but DH helps me with it.

Printedword · 04/03/2025 19:32

Over the banister method works for me. But I don't enjoy the job

We've got a cover less duvet and it's amazing. Really light but also very warm and you just stick the whole thing in the washing machine and it's dry within a few hours. Is also has quilting to keep the inside in place so much easier to make the bed - just a quick shake rather than having to realign the inside with the cover.

No way could I fit a winter duvet into a domestic washing machine so I don't find this to be a practical solution.
Separate duvets and sheets make more sense. If you have to have a king size.

OnlyFrench · 04/03/2025 20:26

I have a king size but now use sheets and an eiderdown. I'm sleeping much better as well as not having to change a quilt cover

DiscoBeat · 04/03/2025 20:46

I'm fine with the duvet covers. I start inside out, grab the corners and flip it over. Easy! But the mattresses are very heavy so they're tricky. I will definitely test lifting the corners in the shop when I replace them.

DiscoBeat · 04/03/2025 20:47

(heavy for putting the fitted sheets on, I mean!)

TammyJones · 04/03/2025 20:51

I have a double bed with a king sized duvet cover.
I use sheets on the bed, washed weekly.
But I no longer put the cover in the duvet - age etc.
I lay it over the top of the duvet
You can't tell at all

faithspikebuffy · 04/03/2025 23:49

I have a super king and use a top sheet
Week 1 has the top sheet
Week 2 remove top sheet
Repeat

TeaRoseTallulah · 04/03/2025 23:51

The answer to this is keep the king-size amd have 2 single quilts with a big bedspread to look today during the day. It's revolutionised bed making for me!

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 05/03/2025 00:00

I find flat sheets much easier than a fitted sheet. I stayed in a hotel in Germany that had 2 single duvets on the bed. It was amazing, so much so that I’m going to change our king size for singles.

I find it really hard, I have to get ds2 to help me, it's the lifting of the mattress to put the mattress protector / undersheet on, then lifting it again to put the sheet corner on.

I don't lift the mattress at all, I couldn't if I tried as it's a heavy Tempur memory foam one ,that's the point of fitted sheets ,isn't it? Lifting the mattress would be a nightmare.

The coverless duvets are designed to fit in a washing machine they're much lighter and squash up smaller than a standard duvet. I've got a standard washing machine and Kung size duvet and it fits in fine

Sunshineandrainbow · 05/03/2025 07:56

Those that have a top sheet between them and the duvet how often do you wash the duvet cover.

MiddleAgedDread · 05/03/2025 07:58

I don’t find changing a king size an issue but my mother moans about her double! My BF has a double bed and I find it too small for two of us and neither of us is large of build. I sleep much better in my bed cos we come into contact less in the night!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 05/03/2025 10:33

I find it hard too, and happily I've traded down to a king size this year.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/03/2025 11:43

I'm much happier doing DS's top bunk than wrestling with superking duvet covers (king size beds, but we sized up the bedding when I was pregant over 2 cold winters and the bump was a 3rd person's width in the bed so the bedding didn't cover well.

I'm 5ft 2, it's just basic maths that I don't have the arm span to grapple with something that wide and I can only do it solo by using magnetic duvet pins and a galleried landing/ bannister.

A king size bed is a good balance between sleeping space and not being overwhelming in bedding size.

Double is nice for one person but very restricted for two. King is closer to a single bed size each, double is noticably less.

How do you get a fitted sheet on, if you don't lift the mattress please?

mondaytosunday · 05/03/2025 12:09

@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut still looks like a workout!

Bitezbabe · 05/03/2025 12:16

We have a super king mattress and use two single duvets. Much easier to change. Also we like different tog duvets.

I don't know, I just know I don't lift the mattress because there no way I can.
