Mains powered upright vacuum recommendations - pets

My trusty 20 year old Dyson Animal has finally given up 😭& I need a replacement.

I already have a battery Shark & while it’s handy for a light clean, I’m not that impressed with it - flimsy/broken parts/crap attachments/constant washing of filters.

What would you recommend- mainly to be used for carpet, we have cats so needs to be good with pet hair & have a good range of solid attachments.

Curry's only seem to have Shark on display. Are Dyson no good anymore? Any other recommendations? UK based.

Shark corded with pet filters and hair bundling thing. Much better power than cordless. Kept my cordless unit for the car only. I wash my filters on the dust cartridge after each use. I don’t know why you would expect a hoover that is super effective but complain at cleaning filters - that literally how it is a good hoover.

I have a Sebo X7 pet and it's brilliant, especially with the optional extendable hose which means that you can hoover the whole stairs while leaving the vacuum cleaner downstairs. It's quite heavy but that makes it more substantial and there's not much on it to break.

I got a Shark Stratos from QVC last October .
It has the Anti-HairWrap , a 10m cord
I sometimes curse the fact it corded but batteries are a pain and make a vacuum heavier
Does the stairs with the lift off bit .
The handle folds for ease of storage and it only stands upright when folded .
The dust cannister and hair collection is grimly satisfying when you see it fill up.

I have cats too .

Yep! I second all of this. The extra long hose was a game changer for me... no more having to precariously balance the hoover half way up the stairs.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone I’ll check those out. The long hose on the Sebo sounds great, my dyson had that too & it’s dead useful for the stairs. We’re in a 3 storey house so that’s important!

Shark Stratos here too, with four fluffy house cats.

Vax pet (the pink one)

That was just from my living room, after I'd been using my Shark. It was absolutely disgusting.

I always used to buy Dyson but refuse to since Brexit and I was finding they weren’t as good as they used to be anyway so last time I bought a Shark based on recommendations on here. It is awful! Doesn’t pick up (yes, I clean the filters regularly), falls over at the hint of a tug and hurts my wrist. Never again.

There is another thread agreeing that Shark are awful and someone recommended a Vax that is half the price and sounds great. I don’t mind paying more but only if they are worth it and for everyone saying a brand is good, there are as many saying it’s rubbish.

I’ve added the Vax to my Amazon basket and am debating how long I can justify waiting to ditch the Shark and give it a go.

We have a rwgular Vax - not a pet one although we do have cats - it is brilliant. In fact l only said to dh this morning it is the best hoover we have ever had.

HundredMilesAnHour · 09/02/2025 15:16

Sebo Felix. Great for pets and very well made. I’ve had mine for almost 15 years and it’s still going strong. 100 times better than a Dyson (that I had previously).

Pigeonqueen · 09/02/2025 15:17

We have a Green Henry Pet cost us £130 from Argos recently. It’s very good. Long hose which means I can almost do the whole house with from one plug. Very powerful, better than the Sharks and other ones we’ve had before. Comes with a turbo pet hair thing. I like the fact it has bags as I have asthma and can’t stand the dust clouds from emptying bagless ones.

ladymalfoy45 · 09/02/2025 15:24

Sebo. Don't forget to replace the filters. Easy to get online. My husband had his for 9 years and I couldn't believe he'd not replaced them.

Im really happy with my Shark Lift away - with having a cat and dog , does a great job

sweetsardineface · 11/02/2025 10:07

I’ve tried several and always go back to the Dyson cat and dog. It’s the best.
