Why is no one talking about how great washer dryers are?

After years of yearning after a tumble dryer to make my life so much easier with 2 small children, I finally settled on a washer dryer because I don't have the room for 2 machines. I was worried because lots of people had said they leave washing wet.

WELL, this is just not true. My washer dryer is... amazing. Life changing. I love it.

Anyone on the fence. Get one. It works perfectly!

Yes I love mine!

TallisTheTruffle · 14/01/2025 11:20

Who has so much washing that a line dry or popping it on a radiator isn't adequate?
Mumsnet, forever at the cutting edge of ecological progression, until something suits them, lol.

Perhaps live more minimally, make less of a footprint? If you need 3 cars yet complain about the cost of living, you're doing it wrong.

5 of us, one disabled and needs a few outfit changes a day, one a competitive sports person who trains every day, two who work outside of the home, yes we probably generate more washing than the average. Putting it all on the radiators would lead to a damp, mouldy house (and that doesn’t help my asthmatic child, plus I don’t have enough radiators).
We only have one car though and it’s electric, so do I pass your eco test?

Ilovemyshed · 14/01/2025 11:31

They take far too long so I prefer a separate washing machine and tumble drier

WoolySnail · 14/01/2025 11:52

Another issue is that if your machine breaks you can usually cope not a having a tumble dryer for a bit whilst getting it fixed or replaced , whereas depending on your household, can't do without a washing machine for that length of time. Obviously some people don't have room for anything other than washer/dryer combo 😕

DecafDodger · 14/01/2025 12:00

who doesn't have that much washing? I only have 2 children, but I do a load or 2 pretty much daily. We all do sports several times per week, plus all towels and bedding - would have entire house constantly full of drying laundry.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/01/2025 12:15

We’ve had one (John Lewis) in a rental flat for over 10 years. I’d better not say ‘with no problem’ because if I do it’s bound to go wrong tomorrow.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 13/01/2025 20:17

Agree it was game changing for us. Though seems to break more than the washing machine did.

This - I have twice had washer/dryers, on both occasions the dryer quit working and i ended up with just a washer (too expensive to repair). I have a washer and a dryer - the last dryer happily did many years service and is still going strong in a friends house.

I think majority of us only have experience of older models which were shite! The one we had, 15yrs ago, could only dry about 2kg of clothing and it would take hours to do do! Its good to know that modern machines are better though.

I had one of those. You could wash a normal load then you had to remove most of it and dry in 3 batches. It was handy if you needed one thing dry but never really used the dryer function. I have a proper tumble dryer now.

Owl55 · 14/01/2025 13:47

I have had 3 Hoover washer dryers , no room for dryer , I only use either the 15 min wash cycle or 59 min wash cycle , drying can take longer but I often pause drying cycle and swap over to dry a different load of washing , I don’t stick to a full drying cycle , suits me .

BitOutOfPractice · 14/01/2025 13:48

It’s better than having no drier at all. But only just.

Hahaha.
Ok I'll line dry my washing in -5 degree weather. Thanks for the tip and actually my stupid radiators in this house are flush with the wall so I can't hang washing on them.

In the summer and if we're not in a rush the washing goes on the line or the clothes horse. Is it a crime to want to not have washing hanging around everywhere?

And if it helps, I don't have a car at all. Only a bicycle 😂

Because they aren’t….

Noodlesnotstrudels · 14/01/2025 14:27

Weve had 3 over the course of 3 years because they kept breaking. All different brands. The current one was a free replacement by AO and it's a Hotpoint. It takes 4 HOURS to do a 4kg load and the stuff still isn't dry. I think most people find them great at first when compared to nothing at all, but after a while they are so frustrating. I'm so sick of mine I'm considering putting a condensing one in the corner of the dining room instead so I can at least get more loads of washing done without the dryer blocking everything up.

Who want radiators all over the house draped in washing, even if the rads are suitable - column rads are not.

Also blocking the heat and creating conditions for mould.

No thanks, I'll keep my house clear of that.

And with towels, bedlinen and clothes, that is around 8 loads of washing per week minimum.

Offcom · 14/01/2025 16:51

I also love my washer dryer! My favourite thing is that it's liberated me from the tyranny of scratchy towels (hard water area).

And you don't have to empty the water out, it goes with the waste water.

The manual for mine says the maximum dryer load is 2kg lighter than the maximum washing load and I do wonder if the reason people have problems with them breaking is that they try and dry too much in one go.

Lovelynames123 · 14/01/2025 16:54

I'd hate one, I'm usually washing a 2nd load whilst the first is tumbling, and both lots would be done within 2 hours. Mine are both in the garage, saves space in the kitchen although I now have far too many cupboards to accumulate crap in!

I hate the damp that comes from drying washing inside, the house is already damp enough. I suppose I could run the heating with all the windows open, or use a dehumidifier....hang on, how is that different from using a tumble dryer? Yes, line dry if the weather's OK, but unlikely for a good chunk of the year in the UK, especially if you work outside the home so can't just nip out to get it in if it starts raining.

Overall, what a ridiculous comment. Modern dryers don't even use huge amount of electricity anyway

You need to use the right setting then.

mathanxiety · 14/01/2025 17:05

One of my DDs (in US) had one that she was never happy with. Her LL replaced it with a stacked washer and dryer after it developed mechanical problems for about the thirteenth time in eighteen months, and she cried tears of joy.

Dont think so? The usual wash on delicate and dry on as low a setting as possible.

All my cotton clothes say " do not tumble dry".

Watermelon500 · 14/01/2025 17:13

Love mine too as I don't have room for separates. I also have a heated airer, so will hang as much on there, do all the washing loads I will have room for and then start the drying cycles so the maxhine only has to dry out once. I also shake out my wasing on the drier setting half way through cycles as I find this speeds up the process as you are releasing a lot of the steam out of the washing and machine.

Looks likes there's a couple of us who are happy with our purchase 😂

2-3 hours is crap op.
Ive never had a good washer dryer but im here to see if anyone has because I’ll happily get rid of my shite Samsung one and try another. But I thought mine was bad and its dries in 2-3 hours aswell. My mums freestanding American style dryer can dry a 6kg load in 30-40 minutes. After Xmas we were chatting on phone and she said she’d washed and was drying the last load of bedding- had taken her less than 24 hours to wash 6 sets of bedding. I was still drying the second lot!!!!
