Why is no one talking about how great washer dryers are?

After years of yearning after a tumble dryer to make my life so much easier with 2 small children, I finally settled on a washer dryer because I don't have the room for 2 machines. I was worried because lots of people had said they leave washing wet.

WELL, this is just not true. My washer dryer is... amazing. Life changing. I love it.

Anyone on the fence. Get one. It works perfectly!

Yeh I had one for years until recently when I could finally have two machines. I’d always rather have a drying option than none. No it’s not as good as a separate drying and takes much longer, but it’s better than no dryer!

LittleRedRidingHoody · 13/01/2025 20:17

Agree it was game changing for us. Though seems to break more than the washing machine did.

Unfinishedcrocheteverywhere · 13/01/2025 20:17

They do get things dry, but I resent the time it takes . I can’t put another load of washing in whilst it’s on ifswim. Which is why our dryer cycle is only used for towels (which even then I often air dry and then when they’re 80% done pop them in to fluff up) or work shirts. A wash/dry cycle takes 4-5.5 hours on this machine we have!

RosesAndHellebores · 13/01/2025 20:17

I had one more than 40 years ago. It was OK for a singleton and I agree was much better than not having one at all. They were rather slow in those days.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 13/01/2025 20:19

I've got 2 washer dryers.

One is a zanussi, it's moved house 4 times and is now at least 18years old. It's in now in a rental and the tenants won't let me get them a new one as they love it so much!

The other is a 5yo Samsung which is also very good, slower at drying though.

I'm not sure why they have such a bad reputation. I think they're great!

LadyChilli · 13/01/2025 20:31

I love mine too. I prefer to dry laundry outside on the line but it has been a game changer to be able to tumble dry when there's unexpected rain, or do all my laundry on EDF's free Sunday when I earn it.

Why is no one talking about how great washer dryers are?

I think majority of us only have experience of older models which were shite! The one we had, 15yrs ago, could only dry about 2kg of clothing and it would take hours to do do! Its good to know that modern machines are better though.

CTW23 · 13/01/2025 20:56

Mine takes between 2-3 hours for a 6kg load. I love hanging washing outside, it's so satisfying but when it's -4 outside and it comes out so warm. It's like a big hug 😂

post a link OP if yours is good because the majority of them are notoriously terrible

DecafDodger · 13/01/2025 21:01

Mine takes between 2-3 hours for a 6kg load.

If you don't have space for dryer then sure better than not having a washer-dryer. But my separate dryer takes an hour for 8 kilo load and I can do another load of washing in the meantime. That's why people don't rate combos as highly.

I assume you are joking OP! 😆
If not, then clearly washer/dryers have NOT come very far in 15yrs then!

Tetchypants · 13/01/2025 22:02

2-3 hours is terrible! I inherited one with this house and it neither washed nor dried well. I used it for all of two weeks before deciding to get rid of the dishwasher in order to fit separate washer and dryer units in.

LeftTheWashingOut · 13/01/2025 22:08

I felt the same when we got ours OP as everyone had warned against them but we didn't have room for two machines.
However reading some of the comments perhaps I'd also be amazed by tumble driers - ours also take a few hours to fry a 6kg load and i just thought that would be how long a tumble drier would take too but based on responses maybe not!

BeaTwix · 13/01/2025 22:12

'cos they aren't actually very good.

You can only dry between half and 2/3rds of the load you can wash if you read the instructions.

They take much longer to dry than separate tumble dryers and have more limitations.

If you tend to have a "washing day" in the week like I do they are really constraining as you can't be washing one load and drying another at the same time.

I have one and have researched extensively if a newer/ more expensive one would overcome the reasons I hate it. It does't look like it would.

They do have their place - if mine died I would replace it with another washer dryer as I don't have space/configuration for separate appliances but I would never choose one if I did. I've had a washer dryer in all the flats I've owned which have come in at various price points. They all had the same limitations. The current one (Indesit) is a real work horse and just keeps going and going. It washes well. It's just the drying that isn't great and I only tend to tumble sheets and towels so I live with it.

I have in the past refused to rent a very tiny flat that only had a washing machine as I knew the lack of tumble drying facility would drive me mad.

Shinyandnew1 · 13/01/2025 22:15

We had one and it was dreadful! The washing would just come out hot and damp and took forever. We should never have got it, I would have been better with a normal washing washing machine and an airer. It shrank things as well.

WingBingo · 13/01/2025 22:16

I have one I inherited with a new house. I wasn’t happy at first as I was aware of the reviews.

once I got used to it it’s been a godsend. I much prefer to line dry but when I need it, it’s fine.

yes it’s a smaller load but I do a load every day so it’s not an issue.

WingBingo · 13/01/2025 22:17

Just to add, once I worked out it only takes 5kg at a time, it stopped coming out hot and wet.

Schoolchoicesucks · 13/01/2025 22:22

I have one. Drying cycle does take a long time and can't dry a full load, but that's ok with me as I tend to do a wash, take out 1/3 to 1/2 to dry on airer (or outside when I can) and then put the rest on a dry cycle. It can take 4 hours to dry on synthetic setting - I tend to take things out after 3 to avoid supercreasing and the last bit seems to take longer in the machine than on an airer.

If I had room, I'd have separates no question. But I wouldn't sacrifice a dishwasher for a tumbledryer. And unless I move the boiler don't have space for washer, dryer and dishwasher.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 13/01/2025 22:23

We're just getting rid of one, they are still terrible, 10kg drum but can only dry 6kg wet and takes hours to do it. We're going for a washer only due to space, but we also have one of those massive wash me ones at the petrol garage at the end of the road, tumble dries 18kg in an hour and texts you ten minutes before it's done.

Thismummyrunstheshow · 13/01/2025 22:37

Mine is the worse thing I've ever owned. Would never recommend and the thing has cost me a fortune in repairs over the past 6 years- I could've bought a new one

Disappointedyogi · 13/01/2025 22:42

Mines a prick. Can't handle more than a few items at a time, takes 3 and a half hours to wash and dry those, then has the audacity to present me with hot, damp clothes. And it shrinks jumpers. Prick.

PigInAHouse · 13/01/2025 22:42

6kg in 2-3 hours is really pretty crap. And you can’t wash another load while the first is drying.
Id have one if I didn’t have room for a seperate dryer because it would be better than nothing, but they certainly dont compare to seperate washing machine/tumble dryer.

A tumble dryer takes a fraction of that time, it’s all about the drum size. Mine takes about 40 mins to dry a full load of pants and socks, though I open it half way through to let all the steam out.

DancingNotDrowning · 13/01/2025 22:57

2-3 hours?!!! Shock
