Why is no one talking about how great washer dryers are?

After years of yearning after a tumble dryer to make my life so much easier with 2 small children, I finally settled on a washer dryer because I don't have the room for 2 machines. I was worried because lots of people had said they leave washing wet.

WELL, this is just not true. My washer dryer is... amazing. Life changing. I love it.

Anyone on the fence. Get one. It works perfectly!

I would get one if I didn’t have space for a washer and a dryer. But I tend to blitz the washing over a day or two - wash first load, put in dryer for about an hour at the most usually while the second wash is on. Tying a machine up for 2-3 hours for one load of washing doesn’t sound great tbh. I could wash 2-3 loads and tumble dry up to two loads in that time.

post a link OP if yours is good because the majority of them are notoriously terrible

Yep, mine was a disaster!

Onabench · 13/01/2025 23:04

Cause they're shite. I thought mine was amazing too but we got through 3 in 7 years and gave up. Heated airers were far more reliable.

LadyWiddiothethird · 13/01/2025 23:05

Because they are not great!

Hants123 · 13/01/2025 23:07

I have recently bought a Candy one as I don't have space for a separate tumble dryer (single mum, low budget) and have been really impressed - it can take up to a couple of hours to dry a full load but it automatically adjusts the drying period so it takes less time for smaller lighter loads, some items I hang up to dry but generally I get 3 washes and 2-3 drying sessions done on wash day.

Does anyone want to buy a white elephant of a Lakeland heated dryer/airer thingy?

Busyquaver1 · 13/01/2025 23:08

Yes but how do you do a second wash while the first wash is drying?

DoubleDoubleDown · 13/01/2025 23:09

Holy shit 2 - 3 hrs that's insane. My 9kg dryer takes about 40 mins for a regular load and probably 50 mins for towels.

Printedword · 13/01/2025 23:14

The drying times on all dryers are so long. With the heating on, everything dries really quickly here, so no need for one

thishouseisashittip · 13/01/2025 23:16

Hated mine, it was awful! Got rid and just bought a bigger machine and a dehumidifier 😃

NoisyRedJoker · 14/01/2025 00:56

Just get a dehumidifier

MrPepInHisStep90 · 14/01/2025 01:07

My friend had Bosch which washed incredibly well, but took forever and day to dry. It used crazy amounts of energy too. I’ve been using a Siemens heat pump dryer for the last three years - it’s brilliant.

catin8oots · 14/01/2025 01:15

They are shit. Always have been

sashh · 14/01/2025 03:36

I've always had one since the 1980s s I have never had room for two machines.

Also I have arthritis and I don't need to move heavy wet washing.

CandlesAndCrystals · 14/01/2025 05:10

I prefer separate machines because the washer dryer spins it fiercely before drying the creases into everything. I say drying, but unless you have it on the hottest setting (which gradually shrinks everything so all the clothes are too small by the end of the season or sometimes after just a couple of washes if I'm unlucky) and choose the Extra Dry button too, then you have to finish it off on the radiator. Even with the hottest settings and Extra Dry, if I don't get the clothes out right away when it beeps it's finished the steam from the drying settles back into the clothes again making them slightly damp. With a separate dryer it's dry heat the drum is never steamy when I open it at the end. My jeans and bedding always came out soft and crease free as did most other things. Now it all comes out each item looking like a screwed up tissue. I have to either steam iron absolutely everything or walk around looking like a tramp. My kitchen isn't big enough for separate machines though and it's better than having no dryer at all.

Yes it's mental. The shortest setting on mine takes an hour and a half for drying and that's on the 90° cycle which is totally inadequate for jeans (they come out 50% dry) and other things come out Cupboard Dry on that setting, according to the machine. They must mean an old fashioned immersion heater in an Airing Cupboard. If I folded the clothes up and put them away Cupboard Dry they'd go mouldy, because they're significantly damp. On a warm rainy day in summer, if there's no jeans in the load and I get to it the moment it beeps it's finished, that 90° Cupboard Dry setting just about works, so long as I shake the steam out of each individual item of clothing separately for 15 seconds (even the underwear) and in front of the airflow of an open window, before putting it away.

moleeye · 14/01/2025 05:20

I've got one - bought it in October

Hate it

Takes 5-6 hours to wash and dry a load and the clothes were still not dry

And it's a hot point machine

Oreyt · 14/01/2025 06:26

I've had one 5 years.

I never use the dryer function. I put it on it takes 5 hours and they come out damp. I can't get the hang of it.

GrannyRose15 · 14/01/2025 06:27

Because they are rubbish. Neither one thing nor another.

Oreyt · 14/01/2025 06:31

Sorry to hijak your post.

This is mine if anyone can give me advice.

Talesfromtheriverbank · 14/01/2025 06:35

No hate them. I have ancient stand alone drier in the garage. Works so much better.

Bryonyberries · 14/01/2025 07:10

I'd rather have the option of a washer dryer than no way to dry quickly at all. I'm lucky that I can have both but I'd hate to rely on only airers and line drying. I guess like anything you adapt around your own circumstances.

They seem to work fairly well for smaller households, I met a few older people with them.

My dryer does 8kg in under an hour, that doesn’t seem long?

capricorn12 · 14/01/2025 09:12

Just as an aside to those who have separate tumble driers, I had to buy a new one last week as my old one conked out and couldn't be repaired and the woman in the repair shop told me that the industry is stopping making the vented tumble driers this year. I assume you would still be able to get the condensing sort. She advised me to buy a more expensive one that should last longer and be fixable in future - she recommended Indesit.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 14/01/2025 09:27

I'd consider a Bosch or Siemens if I were short of space, and needed one. Normally I avoid them because if the washer is broken then the dryer is too, and vice versa.

CTW23 · 14/01/2025 09:54

Wow. Some strong opinions here 😂

2-3 hours is for a wash & dry. I think that's good. My sisters had a pump tumble dryer takes 4-6 hours (I know that's an 'eco' version and there are quicker ones on the market) My old washing machine took 1 hour on the quickest wash cycle (not including the 15 min quick wash)

It works for us anyway. I've had it 5 weeks and basket is always empty because I'm on top of it with smaller loads now. One day I might have space for two machines and live the true dryer dream but for now, it brings me lots of joy 😂
