Best products to clean really dirty kitchen

Blueuggboots · 08/08/2024 12:47

We're moving house and the house we're buying has been empty for 2 years and was previously owned by elderly people.

The kitchen is really dirty - inside the cupboards - but we can't afford to replace it straight away.

Can you tell me the best cleaning products you've found?

Elbow Grease spray, super cheap and a brilliant de-greaser.

Moier · 08/08/2024 12:49

Elbow grease spray and pink stuff.

maplemaplesyrup · 08/08/2024 12:49

Elbow Grease cleaning pads are great too!

Blueuggboots · 08/08/2024 12:50

Thank you!

BTW, I'm not suggesting elderly people have poor hygiene habits!! More general difficulties in keeping things clean!!

For something cheaper I'd start with Soda Crystals, then use Elbow Grease on the worst bits.

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/08/2024 12:58

Sugar soap or a paste made of bicarbonate of soda are good de greasers...and cheap.

Colddipinthemorning · 08/08/2024 13:01

Yes to sugar soap and pink stuff.

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 08/08/2024 13:04

I use a spray bottle with 50/50 water and vinegar, with a small amount of washing up liquid in. It cleans pretty much everything.
I use Pink stuff for the oven.

Porridgeislife · 08/08/2024 13:09

Neat Flash for really gunky bits, diluted for wiping over. Get a cheap spray bottle from Home Bargains etc.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/08/2024 13:18

Sugar soap in liquid form. I once moved into a filthy house (previous owner in her 30s) the kitchen was was disgusting. I also ripped up the bedroom carpet and threw it out of the window as it was full of cat fleas.

Honestly there are a million products out there but you'll get the best results from a proper scrub with a bucket of hot water, fairy liquid and a bit of bleach.

This.

I find using a steam.cleaner gets rid of grime and no chemicals, just use the various attachments.

The application of elbow grease too - the human version, not the product!

Flash spray bleach. Wear clothes you don't mind getting bleached and be careful where you use it, but it works wonders. Since I found this I use it for my 6 monthly deep clean and everything comes up sparkling.

Very hot water and lemon washing up liquid and a sponge with the dark green scrubby side (not the white one).

I had to clean grease deposits that were like toffee off the extractor fan and the tops of cupboards. Honestly washing up liquid and a sponge wouldn't have touched it. I needed something industrial strength in the end

I think if someone is asking for help dealing with filth they will already have tried washing up liquid and a sponge.

Blueuggboots · 08/08/2024 15:52

@CaptainMyCaptain - this is exactly the sort of grime I'm facing! The extractor fan hasn't been cleaned in about 10 years I reckon, and there is a thick sticky layer on everything...

Soap powder in hot water is good for degreasing as is sugar soap

Sugar soap is perfect for that. A whole different game to washing up liquid.

timoteigirl · 08/08/2024 16:45

thanks for all the tips. Not the op. What is best for cleaning the thick layer of dust with grease on top of kitchen cupboards?

Yes. As I suggested upthread. I speak from experience.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 08/08/2024 17:15

Ours was a bit like this when we moved in, if you can stretch to it, get a cleaner in to do a deep clean.. Best money I've ever spent

Blueuggboots · 08/08/2024 17:18

@MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira now there's an idea!!!!
