Best products to clean really dirty kitchen

We're moving house and the house we're buying has been empty for 2 years and was previously owned by elderly people.

The kitchen is really dirty - inside the cupboards - but we can't afford to replace it straight away.

Can you tell me the best cleaning products you've found?

My late aunts kitchen was like this . Lots of neat Fairy liquid and elbow grease got rid of the dirt.

Bio-D Multi Surface Sanitiser is AMAZING on thick grease and burnt greasy ovens. Can use neat, it’s like a gel/jelly and/or dilute it in a bucket or as spray. Non-toxic too but don’t eat it obvs! Works quickly. No nasty fumes.

You’ll prob need a cream cleaner too for a bit of abrasion. I like an eco bicarb one then go back to Bio D to finish off.

Fortyshadesofgreen345 · 08/08/2024 17:27

Make sure you wear gloves and protective glasses using sugar soap op, especially if you are cleaning up above your head.

And don’t know how true this is or not but saw some posts on another website about pink stuff cracking oven doors?

Edited to say: hot water, industrial vinegar, and tiny dollop of bleach gel gets rid of most things but sugar soap excellent for washing walls.

Can you expand on the bio-D sanitiser please? Is that different to the cleaner?

Honestly there are a million products out there but you'll get the best results from a proper scrub with a bucket of hot water, fairy liquid and a bit of bleach.

Add a few drops of Zoflora in a smell you like - it makes cleaning so much more pleasant and makes the place smell nice, and don't forget to have the water as hot as you can stand (with rubber gloves on).

crikeyisthatthetimez · 08/08/2024 17:45

Another vote for sugar soap especially on greasy tiles

thanks for all the tips. Not the op. What is best for cleaning the thick layer of dust with grease on top of kitchen cupboards?

I did mine with elbow grease spray and then lined them with some leftover wallpaper so no need to clean again!

BiggieLittle · 08/08/2024 17:51

I would do the first round with bleach, and pink stuff in a tub for anything that needs a good scrub that won’t come off

then later I would go over with a nice smelling cleaning spray (flash French soap spray is my personal favourite) or zoflora disinfectant.

I find nothing as effective as bleach is to be honest.

Scampuss · 08/08/2024 17:54

Just a reminder not to mix bleach with other cleaning products ⚠️

MitskiMoo · 08/08/2024 17:55

Astonish mould and mildew spray is excellent for the price. I also like Isopropanol 99.9% isopropyl alcohol and Ovenpride for your cooker.

Sorry it looks like I’m a bit out of date and the name has changed. I’m still using a 5 litre refill which may just last me the rest of my life!

https://biod.co.uk/shop/household-cleaning/bio-d-multi-surface-sanitiser-5l/ This seems to be the new version or a new label at least. I’m hoping it is the same or as good.

The old version is called Multi Surface Sanitiser which was easy to confuse with the ready-to-use All Purpose spray as both had red labels so I guess they have changed it to avoid the confusion.

Multi Surface Cleaner 5L - The Bio-D Company

Using powerful, plant based ingredients, our Multi Surface cleaner tackles heavy duty jobs on a multiple of surfaces. From sinks, baths, cookers, floors, tiles and work surfaces.

Sorry if I seem silly. Please can someone tell me what pink stuff is?

tetheredgoat · 08/08/2024 18:17

if its anything like my Mil’s, a flamethrower

julydecembermay · 08/08/2024 18:23

Bar Keepers Friend is good and very cheap in some shops.

BiggieLittle · 08/08/2024 19:27

@DreamyCyanFinch its a thick pink paste that has exfoliating bits in it - great on greasy things and things that need a good scrub.

It’s this one

Blueuggboots · 08/08/2024 15:52

@CaptainMyCaptain - this is exactly the sort of grime I'm facing! The extractor fan hasn't been cleaned in about 10 years I reckon, and there is a thick sticky layer on everything...

Having just deep cleaned my late parents' house to get it ready for sale, I cleaned off the toffee/grease layer in the kitchen with good old Brillo pads and plenty of (human) elbow grease.

ditalini · 08/08/2024 21:51

Cif cream. Original and best imo.

igivein · 08/08/2024 21:57

Stardrops will shift lots of grime - the original neat stuff in a bottle, not the sprays

Notellinganyone · 08/08/2024 21:58

Everything by HG. Their products made our manky shower look like new. I haven’t had a duff product from them.

@DreamyCyanFinch , it's a product called 'Pink Stuff'. You can get it in shops like Home Bargains, One Below and the like. It's the tub one that's good.

Hot water with washing-up liquid gets rid of a lot of grubbiness, before you try 'chemicals'. I use the cheap Aldi or Lidl stuff.

If you use the cheap stuff, keep using it. Switching to Fairy will mean you use too much.

Invest in rubber gloves. Pound shop ones are fine.

Elbow Grease spray is brilliant.

When you're in Home Bargains or pound shop buy those washing up sponges and microfibre cloths. The HB glass cloths are great. You only need water if you use them and they are washable.

Use old t-shirts as rags for drying after cleaning. Kitchen paper contains plastic and is expensive.

WiganPie · 08/08/2024 23:14

If you use Sugar Soap, use the powder. Follow the instructions on how to mix it and how to use it (start at the bottom and work up, not the usual top-down)

Spontex surgical-type gloves are useful but not cheap. (other brands are available)

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES MIX VINEGAR AND BLEACH! the result is highly toxic chlorine gas. Sorry for ‘shouting’ but it can literally result in death.

Bleach is also not a degreaser.

op - elbow grease spray is brilliant. Spray and let it sit, it will dissolve the grease with minimal effort. It’s also very cheap.

I echo what @Pollymollydolly said.

Use 'fairy liquid' + warm water before starting spraying anti-bacterial sprays, bleach sprays etc.

I wasn’t suggesting mixing them!

Apologies for my unclear post!
