Awful smell like cat p*ss! We haven't got a cat, what is it?

There is a shocking pissy smell in the front room. We haven't got any cats, and though there are cats in the neighbourhood they have never been in the house. Could a cat piss down a chimney (out of sheer badness or something? Would it bother?)
I know I have an almost-potty-trained 3 year old and therefore should be used to pissy smells, but this doesn't really smell like human piss if you KWIM (sorry if that's a bit TMI this early in the morning).
Any ideas?

It's not a ......ddddead mouse is it?

Has someone spilt milk?

BettySpaghetti · 02/04/2008 09:52

sorry but pmsl at the thought of a cat squatting over a chimney pot to piss

Could it be something dead and decomposing ie. bird in the chimney or is it definitely a pissy smell?

BBBee · 02/04/2008 09:52

think you might be right - might be dead thing under floorboards or something.

BettySpaghetti · 02/04/2008 09:54

Another thought -have you brought something into the house that was previously outside (eg toy, plant) ? Maybe a cat sprayed on it whilst it was in the garden?

gingerninja · 02/04/2008 09:56

We had a mouse (bought in by our cats) which died and was hidden under a box for a couple of weeks and it did smell decidedly of cat piss.

madamez · 02/04/2008 10:01

Oh arse I bet it's a farking dead mouse. Had a mouse problem a couple of months ago, used traps to dispatch mice but did leave some poison bait in a couple of hidden locations... Will have a hunt later on.
Have just had dead rat in back garden as well. Urgh, I hate rodents.

OP posts:
BBBee · 02/04/2008 10:11

if you can't find it the smell will go as the mouse becomes dessicated.

MyEye · 02/04/2008 10:14

put out a saucer of vinegar for a bit
i had a nasty mystery pissy stench a while back, this really worked

GrapefruitMoon · 02/04/2008 10:23

We had a similar small a while back - was convinced there was a dead rodent somewhere (had mice problems). Then moved the computer upstairs for a while and a similar small in the room where the computer was.... dh is adamant that there couldn't be a dead mouse in the computer.... computer is downstairs again and smell has gone from upstairs. We are none the wiser...

lillypie · 02/04/2008 10:23

You don't have any Shalimar perfume lurking about do you
That smells like cat piss.

GrapefruitMoon · 02/04/2008 10:23

smell not small!

jesuswhatnext · 02/04/2008 10:45

do you have a bunch of daffs or narsiccis (sp) in the room, they make the water in a vase smell very 'cat pissy'

madamez · 02/04/2008 13:12

Thank you Jesus! (Now there's a phrase I rarely use) - there were some dead daffs in a vase on top of the book case that I had forgotten about, and that seems to be the source of the smell.

GM, check your wirings as it could be something overheating in the computer. Do you have lots of bits plugged into it on a 4-way (scanner, printer, modem, webcam etc?)

OP posts:
GrapefruitMoon · 02/04/2008 13:17

Oh yes, when I had to move the computer in a hurry one day (long story) I couldn't believe how manny fecking wires, etc there were - and as you say, all plugged into a 4-way adaptor I'm pretty sure the smell was coming from the "box" on the floor - don't know what the technical term is [luddite emoticon]

Naetha · 02/04/2008 17:00

Dead hyacinths smell like cat pee.

JRocks · 02/04/2008 17:03

DP's football kit is usually pretty stenchy after a week fermenting in the back of the car, despite frequent requests to bring it in..but I'm guessing I'm alone with that particular struggle...

Jazzicatz · 02/04/2008 17:04

Trainers - mine smell of piss!

Kammy · 02/04/2008 17:54

I've just logged on to ask a question about the very same thing....except we do have a cat - a very non smelly cat and smell has just appeared and only in hall and dining room. Cat spend all her time in ds bedroom. How wierd is this?
It's driving me mad, I've looked everywhere for dead mouse, cleaned very thoroughly and tried any number of air fresheners.
If anyone finds a solutuion, please enlighten/help.

are you sure a cat hasn't crept in, crapt and crept out again?

LyraSilvertongue · 02/04/2008 18:13

DP's gym trainers smell like cat's pss when they're wet.
Also, I bought a bottle of Waitrose orange and passion fruit squash. That smells really strongly like cat's p
ss.. I had to tip the bottle away because I couldn't stand the stink.

BadHair · 02/04/2008 18:25

Gas? Our neighbours called out the emergency gas leak people one night as they had a funny smell in their hall, and it turned out that our cat had sprayed up their front door. Gas man said lots of people mix up the two smells.
