there are 9 panelled doors
miles of skirting
one floor to ceiling window
and the stair is a rahter high ceiling
the walls are brown a the mo - not our choice - weve just moved in and im so sick of the brown
so brown will need at least coats i suppose - i want cream walls and white doors and skirting

price does NOT include paint

is thsi a reasonable price? paitner is friend of a friend and he says this price includes a 10% idscount

is this reasonable

sounds about right sadly
I won't tell you what we paid to have most of our house painted

it is a shocker isn't it

Maidamess · 25/03/2008 17:01

It sounds about right to me...I factor on about £500 per room when I've had decorators in...this includes all prep, priming, filling, sanding, etc etc and painting.

The hall stairs and landing are more pricey because the ceilings are so high?

nailpolish · 25/03/2008 17:02

i would do it myself - it would take weeks i know - but the ceilng is too high

buggeration

Twiglett · 25/03/2008 17:02

nailpolish · 25/03/2008 17:03

oh boollocks

was hoping youd say it ws expensive and to get another quote

oh well shall just ahve to save up some more

although dh says wed be better spending the money on new guttering (but thats so boring!)

Dh used to do ours. You can hire special ladders to reach the ceiling.

zippitippitoes · 25/03/2008 17:08

i just paid 1500 quid for the spare house to be painted..no doors cos they are oak

three rooms plus two small bathrooms and the hall and stairs

so doesnt sound that different

they also did the external windows only two and a half and the gate

SheherazadetheGoat · 25/03/2008 17:08

sounds good, in fact can i have his number?

painting doors iand woodwork is devils work and looks crap if not done properly.

nailpolish · 25/03/2008 17:13

zippi you have a spare house?

OP posts:
nailpolish · 25/03/2008 17:13

yes i agree goat

so, how can i persuade dh to do this first instead of the guttering?

OP posts:
scampadoodle · 25/03/2008 17:14

That sounds way cheap, especially with all that woodwork. Decorators round here (London) charge at least £100 per day, per person working, plus VAT. I paid £600 to have the DSs' bedroom painted.

SheherazadetheGoat · 25/03/2008 17:23

is the guttering bad? last thing you want is damp walls.

nailpolish · 25/03/2008 17:24

yes its broken and is held up with sellotape

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 25/03/2008 17:27

Decorators round here (Norwich) charge £120/130 a day so your quote sounds pretty low.
Is he any good do you know?

Swedes · 25/03/2008 17:27

I think that sounds really cheap. We paid over £2,500 to have our hall, stairs and landing decorated.

What direction does your hall face (where does the main light come from?)? There is cream and there is cream - some are horribly peachy or pinky and some are too citrusy. What colour is your carpet?

Exciting.

zippitippitoes · 25/03/2008 17:29

sadly i do have a spare house

tho it might eventually be going to be finished just waiting for the never beenb used/uncommissioned boiler to be fixed

and then the inside will just about be doen once i have completed the insulation

thenj the outside to do

but i am letting my dd1 rent it off me

lucky girl

it has a luxury litchen and bathrooms and oak floors unlike my house which amanges not to have a functioning washbasin anywhere

and my kitchen is nothing like that one

that one has walnut worktops

oatcake · 25/03/2008 17:32

Hey NP! sounds reasonable to me. Before we moved last year, had one kitchen wall replastered, all walls repainted, the windowcill done, and the back passage.

Kitchen was about 9ft x 7ft, back passage 3ft x 7ft.

It cost £420.

Completely over budget with the new place though and so will have to do it ourselves...

lizziemun · 25/03/2008 17:37

Sounds about right.

The going rate where we live is £250 a day.

nailpolish · 25/03/2008 17:37

hi oaty

zip, that sounds lovely

there is a large window - floor to ceiling - but it faces north - all other light comes in via the bedrooms - although the front door is glass too, so some light gets in there, but thats also norht facing

whatever possessed them to paint it brown i will never know. although the carpet is quite nice actually - very good quality kind of richtea colour with very small brown flecks (htey must hve picked out the brown from the carpet flecks then )

bellavita · 25/03/2008 17:38

Sounds reasonable. We have a very high floor to ceiling stairs and landing and as many doors. It cost us around £450 to have it done without paint a good 5 years ago.

We have done it ourselves since - but it did take forever.

nailpolish · 25/03/2008 17:38

lizzie - wtf? £250 a day? im going to train as a painter!
