there are 9 panelled doors
miles of skirting
one floor to ceiling window
and the stair is a rahter high ceiling
the walls are brown a the mo - not our choice - weve just moved in and im so sick of the brown
so brown will need at least coats i suppose - i want cream walls and white doors and skirting

price does NOT include paint

is thsi a reasonable price? paitner is friend of a friend and he says this price includes a 10% idscount

is this reasonable

Sounds pretty good - dh is at this moment on the phone checking out estimates for our place - hall (big, high ceilings, 2 beds - need wallpapered, kitchen, bathroom, all woodwork - 8 doors) - all coming in at about 3/4k . We're gonna be working the bare plaster look for some time to come....

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 25/03/2008 18:23

dp and i have spent all yes all weekend doing one bedroom, friday saturday sunday and yesterday and three out of four of those nights till midnight.

The bedroom is 3/4 done but the floor arrives thursday as does flatpack bed and wardobe so there goes next weekend

it is hell! but worth it - i do have pride that we do it ourselves plus i am a perfectionist - so like it 'just so'

It has still cost us £400 just in materials and the floor is £550 but a painter would have charged more

horses for courses innit

CrackerOfNuts · 25/03/2008 18:30

I am paying £250 to have my hall, stairs and landing done, but it is my dad doing it, and it does mean that by the time he does it I will be ready to move into an old folks home.

CrackerOfNuts · 25/03/2008 18:30

I do normally do all the painting myself, but the hall, stairs and landing is way too big a job for me.

Just done my room, which looks fab.

callmeovercautious · 25/03/2008 18:32

Could you do all the prepwork on the doors etc to save him time and therefore you money?

If a decorator gets a paintbrush out before the end of day 2, then sack him. And the lining paper should be hung horizontally if you are having wallpaper. Light switches, plugs, lights, etc should be loosened from the wall or removed (and put back afterwards) altogether by a good decorator. My decorator is a total fuss pot and I love him.

bramblebooks · 25/03/2008 20:47

drawing up a bill for ds1 - have spent the entire weekend redecorating his room!

ScienceTeacher · 25/03/2008 20:52

It sounds very reasonable. It's a big job.

What does the work include? Is there anything you can do yourself to reduce the cost?
When we had our house plastered the plasterer included costs for small jobs like sanding or removing paper. When we talked to him, he pointed out that we could do that easily and it would make a big difference to cost. Plus, because he was here anyway, quotes for subsequent plasteting work were cheaper so it averaged out better.
I didn't realise painters were so expensive. I've vowed never to paint a wall again but may have yo rethink that...

NomDePlumeReloaded · 01/09/2017 17:50

puffin this is a zombie thread bumped by a spammer. The OP was in 2008, I suspect the decorating is sorted by now Grin

sweatylemon · 02/09/2017 07:41

My quote for hall stairs and landing was nearly 4K (with paint)
To include sanding & painting 14 doors skirting & 2 x sets of banisters & rails.
Also ceilings
I need to add Vat, so will be over 4K I guess

zippydoodaar · 02/09/2017 11:07

That sounds cheap. Decorators around here charge £150 a day.

If they factor in 25 days holiday and 8 days bank holiday then it's only a salary of £34k. Hardly a fortune!

WishUponAStar88 · 02/09/2017 11:13

Zombie thread ... probably needs redecorating by now Grin

tribpot · 02/09/2017 11:14

HappydaysArehere · 05/09/2017 09:32

Suggest you use really good paint. I have found that Sanderson's sounds expensive but you need half as much covering and half as much time.

Yes, I've been quoted three times as much for the hall, landing and stairs. No doors included

MyBrilliantDisguise · 24/09/2017 18:47

Reported. Zombie thread + advertising - not a good combination.
