What do you spend per week on food shopping??

Just wanted to get a rough idea, we seem to be spending a huge amount and I've just spent an hour working out our basic grocery costs without treats and it seems way over the top. I do have 2 children in nappies (1 special needs) and a husband who works from home so extra coffee milk etc...I can only put it down to the rising costs of food!.. baked beans anyone?

I spend between £100-£130 when I do a big shop.

fairydust · 03/03/2008 17:14

we spend roughly 70 a week and that for me dp and dd plus dss at weekends

can you not get free nappies for your sn child ????

fizzledizzle · 03/03/2008 17:14

we spend on average £50-60 per week that for 2 adults and 2 ds one 10 one 6.

cazboldy · 03/03/2008 17:15

approx £100 a week, 2 in nappies

5 children and 2 adults

Wisteria · 03/03/2008 17:15

Some weeks £70, other weeks £100 average about £80 a week for a family of 4.

JingleyJen · 03/03/2008 17:15

Most weeks the sainsburys shop comes to about £60-70 for 2 adults and 2 children. However this doesn't include meat that we get from the butchers once a month. that would add about another £10 per week to the bill.

BenFMsmum · 03/03/2008 17:16

Thanks NAB you've made my day!! I've been trying to get my shopping bill down too but just can't seem to do it!! I have to buy wheat free stuff, nappies and have 3 cats to feed and it all adds up!!

booge · 03/03/2008 17:21

£80 - £100, two in nappies and food is our weakness these days. We don't really drink or smoke or anything.

dirtygertiefromnumber30 · 03/03/2008 17:24

on average £100 per week for a family of 4

S1ur · 03/03/2008 17:27

We thgouht ours was over the top when it kept coming to £100

SO

Now it is still sometimes £80 but often £60

Four of us and we buy wine

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 03/03/2008 17:27

We spend £100 plus for four of us, and that doesn't even include toiletries and cleaning products etc.
We do try to balance our evening meals though so we have nights where we have a big all out meal, then the next night beans, mushrooms and eggs on toast etc.

I think eating out is the biggest cost for us, it really adds up.

FAWKEOFF · 03/03/2008 17:28

£100 plus we are a family of 4 one, have tried to shop around to try and lessen the bill but it ends up larger if i dont shop under one roof

VictorianSqualor · 03/03/2008 17:28

We do it fortnightly, we used to spend about £100 a week, but now we spend about £150ish a fortnight.
That's for me, dp and DD(7)/DS(3)

BenFMsmum · 03/03/2008 17:30

How do you do it Slur??

choosyfloosy · 03/03/2008 17:34

we allow £66 per week for the 3 of us so i don't think you're doing that badly

16 of ours is for a ridiculous poncy thing which I'm not going to mention (OK veg box)

we have no cats, only 1 child in nappies only at night

we struggle to keep it that low tbh - make tight lists, avoid buying liquids, add up the spend as we go round the supermarket, you know the kind of thing. cut meat out or reduce it right down - 2 rashers bacon will make a whole veg stew taste more interesting etc.

mainly if we manage it it's because we've eaten really boring food, but the nice veggies help.

OrmIrian · 03/03/2008 17:34

About 120 a week. But that is not just food. Cleaning stuff, cat food and wine too.

OrmIrian · 03/03/2008 17:35

For 5 of us.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 03/03/2008 17:38

i cannot believe some of these figures

i am frugal and careful but i would estimate ALL the food we eat inc school lunches fruit nappies toiletries to probaby be £180 a week and that is being really careful - i am going to check last months visa now as this has shocked me

Wisteria · 03/03/2008 17:43

How many of you Paula?

S1ur · 03/03/2008 17:46

Plan meals.

Only buy on offer wine.

I buy chicken and other meat fortnightly if I can and freeze.

We have lots of pasta and rice.

At least one meal a week is 'cupboard' love, so mystery made up recipe using what's in the cupboard.

Oh and my children don't eat anything

this thread was interesting

twofishes · 03/03/2008 17:46

family of five...for all things inc nappies (2 in nappies) cleaning stuff, cat food etc about £60-£80 per week inc a couple of bottles of wine on a good week..
This is all listed before I go or I do it on internet and create meals around all the offers ....eat reasonably heathily but do have some trash meals prob once a week ...

LittleMissBliss · 03/03/2008 17:46

Depends on who's doing the shopping, if it me £40-50 and if its DP £50-70 (beer and other -not needed food he tends to pick up). We are a family of 3 with one baby in nappies. We also get meat from the butchers every month or so and freeze (I'm a Vege)
. So thats Prob an extra £7 a week.

Bky · 03/03/2008 17:47

Around 35.00 for me, dp and 18 month dd, includes nappies most weeks and pet food. Have to go back during the week and get more milk and bread though.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 03/03/2008 17:47

7 of wisteria but a lady lower down says £100 with 2 in nappies??? i cannot believe that

S1ur · 03/03/2008 17:48

Don't get me wrong, I could easily spend more, I'd love to spend more, but we're a bit skint at the moment

so have a budget of about £300-£350/month (which we do exceed frequently its a learning curve)
