What do you spend per week on food shopping??

Just wanted to get a rough idea, we seem to be spending a huge amount and I've just spent an hour working out our basic grocery costs without treats and it seems way over the top. I do have 2 children in nappies (1 special needs) and a husband who works from home so extra coffee milk etc...I can only put it down to the rising costs of food!.. baked beans anyone?

Where do you shop Paula?? Harrods??

I shop at a mix of Tesco and Morrisons.

We dont eat meat every night because we choose not to.

I buy about £15 fruit and veg and salad.

Free range eggs at butchers too.

We eat lots of soup and homemade bread.

I buy packed lunch stuff for the children.

would love to see your shopping list!!

LyraSilvertongue · 03/03/2008 18:32

On average about £120 (for four of us)

hifi · 03/03/2008 18:42

god, mine is between 150-180 per week, me dh amd dd, all fruit and fish/ meat is from m+s, loads of fruit, maybe £40. dd has 2 organic salmon fillets for tea £4.99. £40 on wine.
we are only going to drink at weekends now so it should drop. we also eat out at least twice a week. we could save loads.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 03/03/2008 18:47

tesco

I think in a way these threads are irrelevant as no one buys the same things. If all your shopping was the value ranges then it could be about £30 upwards whereas if you chose to buy brands/organic/etc it is always going to be at the high end of the scale so the OP shouldn't beat herself up about not being able to spend less.

kaballie · 03/03/2008 18:49

Blimey, think I need to meal plan. we spend at least £120 for 2 plus 9 month old! Evrything organic though. And we don't even drink!

claireybee · 03/03/2008 18:50

We have a budget of £150-200 a month for groceries. I then draw £20 a week cash, most of which goes on extra bread/milk/veg. That's for two adults a toddler and a baby. Both are in cloth nappies though, although the baby wears a disposable at night at the moment. That includes some wine and treats.

Wisteria · 03/03/2008 18:51

I knew this would get silly...........

I do wish MN would lose the 'them and us' brigade thing. So what if someone spends more? If you have more you spend more - there's no shame in it, well not in my opinion anyway

babyjjbaby · 03/03/2008 18:53

it's nice if u can afford to spend alot on food we used to be able to afford it but can't anymore does any1 else done this and miss being able to go and buy what u want

Mercy · 03/03/2008 18:55

I think it does make a difference that Collison's dh is a chef.

And food prices have def. gone up over the last 6 months/year as noddy said.

Anyway, we spend anything from £70 - £120 per week but that includes non-grocery items too.

Wisteria · 03/03/2008 18:55

Yes me!!

It is rough at first.....I used to think nothing of spending £100 on a dinner party

BenFMsmum · 03/03/2008 19:14

Wisteria, I was looking at the organic veg boxes today in Tesco. Do you get yours from a supermarket or somewhere else?

currantbunmum · 03/03/2008 19:17

Between £80-£100 from Sainsburys on a Monday, then on Fridays off to Waitrose and about another £40 for the weekend.

2 adults, 2 children, 1 in nappies 1 in night time pants.

That includes no wine, and we don't eat meat every day, any meat we do buy is free range or organic, but we do eat it less frequently.

Most meals are made from scratch with the exception of Pizza Express Pizza's.

Ours used to be £130ish a week for 3 of us and a dog (she eats meat and veg)

I have recently got it down to £80 (if doing ocado) to £110 (if going to waitrose) by doing a bit of planning. I also have a lot less waste

This excludes wine of course which is about a billion quid a week on top

Hi hairy hands

How goes it?

throckenholt · 03/03/2008 19:28

food prices have gone up in the last 6 months.

We spend about £500 a month on household stuff and food (supermarket and local shops) - for 3 kids, 2 adults.

Miggsie · 03/03/2008 19:29

Too much!

Overrun · 03/03/2008 19:38

I do wish that we could cut our food bill, but I also think that food is important, to eat good quality nutritious food I mean. I am sure you can do that on a tighter budget, but I may be a snob about this, I can't go back to Robinsons Jam when I know how much I like Tiptree Jam. But most importantly I want to eat free range chicken, and some organic products. Once you start doing this, your bill goes up massively I guess you make your choices in life, and we have come down on the side of eating well for most of the time, as opposed to going on holiday every year

theyoungvisiter · 03/03/2008 19:41

about £80-100 a week for everything - that's not just food but household items, toiletries, nappies etc and the odd bit of clothing for me/DS (our Sainsbury's has a clothing section)

That's only me, DH and DS, but we aren't trying to save money at the moment. When I am on an economy drive we can get it down to about £60-80 (mostly by cutting out wine and eating more veg)

ska · 03/03/2008 19:42

i had got it down to £284 a month but it sgone up since we moved and i have a crap kitchen and havent found all the good shops yet, tho found a great farmers stall for veg last week. and now my dh has jumped on teh free range chicken nbandwagon (tho quite right!) i can' t get away with 2 chickens for £5 at tesco anymore.. hey ho

iamdingdong · 03/03/2008 19:45

like overrun there I some things I won't compromise on, like good jam/marmalade, free range etc I aim to keep supermarket bill down to £350 a month (family of 4) but this doesn't include wine, DTs are fed at nursery mon-fri DH gets free lunches and mine are subsidised at £1.05 a day, we still don't always manage it

brightonlass · 03/03/2008 19:46

We spend £40-60 per week for 2 adults and two children in nappies. I cook most things from scratch and only shop at Lidl/Aldi. We used to spend about £80-100 in Tesco because we were tempted by the offers. We always shop with a list now!

dosydot · 03/03/2008 19:47

£50 at supermarket( 1 in nappies)
£20 at butchers
£20 top ups during the week( milk, bread, extra veggies, more wine)

This is for 4 people all meals, toiletries , cleaning etc

I wish it could be less, Budget wise I need to be £20 down on this total but dont seem able to manage it, ( and no I can't cut out the wine)
