Need a new vacuum cleaner, help me choose

I am looking for a new vacuum after my upright Dyson has given up after 12 years. Loved it, great suction on carpet, rugs, and wooden floors.

Thinking of getting another Dyson but I'm also tempted to try a different brand. Leaning towards a Shark upright but I am seeing so many terrible reviews online, Dyson equally generates a lot of negativity.

Help, what do you use/recommend?

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for vacuum cleaner recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best vacuum cleaners page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

We've always had Dyson's but have given up with them now as the very expensive cordless one is so crap. Plus all the Brexit nonsense.

We're really pleased with our new Shark (stratos pet) but we went for the corded one after borrowing a friend's cordless and deciding it was on par with the (crap) Dyson.

Be careful with Miele. We had intended to get one as everyone raves about them but I understand manufacturing has recently been moved from Germany to China. When GHD did this it really impacted the quality.

Thanks so much for your input everyone.

Not sure if I'm even more confused now 😅

Sometimes the choice of brands is so overwhelming. Lots to look into and think about now

Our last place was a cottage very narrow stairs,so I had an LG cylinder, which passed to my DS when we moved. Kept going for 15 years, but I don't know what today's models are like.

Forgot,I kept the LG, cylinder upstairs, because it was too difficult with the upright Dyson

All these recommendations for Henry?! I hate that smug little bastard with a passion.

I find the head sort of sticks to the floor rather than running over it and I have to put the head directly on things to have a chance of picking them up. Not to mention the hose falls apart mid-use. And then just when you get into a rhythm, he throws a tantrum and falls over dramatically - directly into your ankles.

I absolutely love my Dyson but don't think I could buy another one after all the Brexit hypocrisy.

Not much help. Sorry!

I love Henry for his longevity but I hate him for being such hard work. After years of hoovering being a sweaty arduous task with Henry I've bought a cheap Bush cordless stick and suddenly I realise how other people manage to hoover regularly without losing the will to live!
