Does anyone else feel great satisfaction at being able to hang laundry outside in the sun?

We don't have a tumble dryer (no space), and I feel so satisfied seeing my freshly washed laundry hanging outside in the sun. Better for the environment, dries quicker, smells nicer once dry, with the occasional waft of freshener drifting through the open window. Bonus points if it's something I can put on a hanger and hang outside, then put it straight in the wardrobe once dry.

I never thought I'd find something like this satisfying! We've never lived anywhere that could fit a tumble dryer (apart from before we moved out of our family homes), and I hate hanging stuff indoors, it just gets in the way or takes about two days to dry and fills the room up with condensation.

Anyone have any household chores just fill them with such happiness?

I'm the complete opposite. I hate drying washing outside but as I don't have a tumble dryer I have to do it in the summer. I can't stand how crispy everything gets, or the insects all over the clothes and the inevitable bird poo on the sheets 🙈

I miss line drying. It’s too dusty or smoky in summer and too cold in winter (I am in Canada). And most houses have forced air here, not radiators.

lifesrichpageant · 03/09/2023 02:51

i love this so much - already a bit sad that the sunny days are ending...

Absolutely! We moved house in January and DH put me up a double washing line for Valentine's Day 😂😂

He’s definitely a keeper! Xx

Yes i love it.

Is it true in America it’s not the norm?

myvinted · 03/09/2023 03:22

One of my favourite things about my new flat. I did have the option in my last flat and and I did occasionally hang washing, but it was a horrible concrete space, I was up four flights of stairs.

Now it's a lovely garden and only one flight.

I match my pegs and hang in order, then l check it out from my window with great satisfaction Grin

Beaverbridge · 03/09/2023 03:27

Omg, it's the best thing ever ha. I peg it out then stand at kitchen window watching it. Even better if its bedding, so fresh getting into bed. Haven't had a tumble drier for years.

Lol. I’ve had to force myself to not match up my coloured clothes pegs, even though I’d like to.

I’ve been in bed sick the last two days and I’m annoyed that I’ve missed out on hanging laundry in the garden during the last two days of Sun. I’ll have to catch up later today.

myvinted · 03/09/2023 03:50

I was texting with a friend today and she was annoyed as she's unwell and couldn't get out enjoy the sun. I said I had no intention of going anywhere because I was staying home to hang washing!

I'm lying in my lovely line dried bedding right now.

rainbowstardrops · 03/09/2023 04:00

I love it too! It reminds me of my dear mum and the lovely fresh smell when she brought the washing in!

frisseaze · 03/09/2023 04:23

We have a small patio so don't have a washing line. I do have this https://www.leifheit.co.uk/leifheit-pegasus-180-solid-maxx-free-standing-clothes-laundry-airer-dryer-381-p.asp however. It's so sturdy that it never blows over. I live in SE England so use this summer and winter - very easy to move inside if it starts to rain too. Very satisfying. Do have to use tumble dryer in winter for sk duvet covers and sheets but that's about all.

LEIFHEIT Pegasus 180 Solid Maxx Free Standing Clothes Laundry Airer Dryer

The MAXX offers an extra-large area in terms of both height and width. So it's not only long items of laundry that can be hung up with no contact

There’s nothing like getting into a bed of freshly line dried bedding. Love it! I’m jealous 😁

itsgettingweird · 03/09/2023 06:25

Absolutely!!!

One of the biggest things all this summer rain annoys me about is not being able to hang out my washing!

I don't actually care about the rain. But a sunny dry laundry day thrown in once a week is a must 🤣

Goldencup · 03/09/2023 06:29

I love it, I feel it's like a flag flying - all is well in this house. Just my put my first load on will be hanging it out before 8am to make the most of the sunshine. Love it in June when if you are careful you can get 3 loads through

2023usernameNew · 03/09/2023 06:41

I love it to the point I sometimes find myself sitting outside staring at it and smiling.

I read once about a laundry shop in Berlin that charges extra to dry clothes in a field they have outside the city.

Totallyterrific · 03/09/2023 10:04

@PickAChew oh! I never iron either tbh. I havent owned an iron/board in 15 years.

LaundryWoes · 03/09/2023 10:09

Something about a blue sky, green lawn and white bedsheets on the line makes my heart happy.

tourdefrance · 03/09/2023 10:14

The best things in life are free and this is definitely one of them!

We only have an airer unfortunately but I still love drying things outside rather than the tumble dryer as much as possible. On holiday we had a line and I was able to indulge my peg-matching OCD tendencies 😂!

calamariqueen · 03/09/2023 10:23

My favourite thing on holiday is washing all the dirty clothes & towels & drying them in a couple of hours of fierce Mediterranean sun!

At home it’s my favourite “chore” gives me a break from being inside & screen time. I WFH and think of this a perfect job for stretching myself out of chair shape!!

ASGIRC · 03/09/2023 10:27

In my country, washing lines out of the windows of flats are a common thing, as gardens are NOT.

Unfortunately, my washing like is difficult to reach, and it is shared with the next door neighbour as well, which can make it tricky.

I was, however, very much looking forward to doing some washing and hanging it out... but of course, it is due to piss it down with rain all this week (needed, though, its been a dry summer so far!)

Clefable · 03/09/2023 10:37

I do the first time I do it after winter. Then I quickly remember I find it all a time-consuming pita Blush

Awumminnscotland · 03/09/2023 10:42

Nope. I hear women say this all the time. Nuts! My husband said it once. He tried it once, then never again. I ignored the line apart from to hang teddies and paintings from, until it fell down. I acknowledge that we're lucky enough to have a tumble drier that we can so far afford to run.

Iamacatslave · 03/09/2023 10:44

Love it.

ShadyPaws · 03/09/2023 10:45

Not allowed in my garden Sad and my neighbour would report me
Once he's gone, I will be hanging washing!

Tadpolle · 03/09/2023 10:54

I love it too!

Last year in the mad heatwave we had temps up to 40 degrees here (Yorkshire) and we have a sunny back yard with washing lines. I washed and outdoor dried everything, including king size feather duvet (fits in 8kg washing machine), all the sofa blankets, coats, pet bedding. I think of it fondly often.
