Does anyone else feel great satisfaction at being able to hang laundry outside in the sun?

We don't have a tumble dryer (no space), and I feel so satisfied seeing my freshly washed laundry hanging outside in the sun. Better for the environment, dries quicker, smells nicer once dry, with the occasional waft of freshener drifting through the open window. Bonus points if it's something I can put on a hanger and hang outside, then put it straight in the wardrobe once dry.

I never thought I'd find something like this satisfying! We've never lived anywhere that could fit a tumble dryer (apart from before we moved out of our family homes), and I hate hanging stuff indoors, it just gets in the way or takes about two days to dry and fills the room up with condensation.

Anyone have any household chores just fill them with such happiness?

I’ve never had a tumble dryer. I think clothes have an odd aroma if they’re tumbled. Can always tell when stood next to someone in a queue or sat together at a desk.

Im a bit of a nut when pegging out my washing though. All pants together, all tees together, sheets & slips in the same area and towels like wise. Orderliness gone mad. Love it!

We used to have a "knicker bush" next to the washing line. The children used to lay out socks on it and thread pants on the branches to dry when they were little. We ignored DH's protests about the occasional caterpillar in his Y-fronts...

cadentiasidera · 02/09/2023 23:14

Yes, sooo satisfying! I feel like I've wasted the sunshine if it's a sunny day and I haven't done a load of washing! The best day is the first day in spring when I can bring the washing straight from the line to the airing cupboard without it having to go on an airer or radiator in between.

I have been known to take photos of particularly pretty lines of washing (my own I mean, not other people's!!)

The smell of line dried is so gorgeous. No bottled chemical crap comes near. Changed bedding tonight and am playing mental ‘bed video’ in head for that moment I get in and fresh air and feel envelops me

whathappenedtosummer23 · 02/09/2023 23:25

I far prefer to use the drier but there are some things which can’t be tumbled, mainly shirts and anything sweatshirt material so they go on the lines. I would hate to have line dried underwear or socks, they’re so soft and lovely and warm from the drier

Due to the recent not great weather we have resorted to clothes maidens in the house again. I put a load of washing on the line last night (being darked on does not worry me) and added more today. It was all lovely and dry and smelled so fresh. I do miss the days (many years ago) of seeing all the tiny baby clothes and my terry nappies blowing in the breeze though.

fetchacloth · 02/09/2023 23:31

Me!
I have a tumble dryer but really resent using it during the summer months 😬

Oh yes I find it very therapeutic hanging washing out. I've even been known to then make a cup of tea sit in the garden and glance admiringly at the full line blowing in the wind.

I also do this, I thought I was the only one 😅

Oblomov23 · 02/09/2023 23:35

Yes, definitely prefer hanging a wash out on the line.

My washing is being darked on too. I'm hoping the spiders keep their Willy's to themselves tonight 😉

I love it too OP especially when you get loads dry, I've done 4 loads today with most of it dry and put away.

I think it's my age ... but the first thing I think when i know it is going to be a dry, sunny weekend, is "great, I can get loads of washing hung outside "

Enormous satisfaction.

Nothing better than getting into bed with fresh sheets that have dried outside 😀

PickAChew · 02/09/2023 23:44

I wouldn't be without my tumble dryer as I have grown up kids with SN and need to do several. Loads a day but not on a warm day when it makes the house hot! I tend to give stuff a very short tumble to relax the fibres before hanging it out but it smells so much fresher for that bit of UV.

paisley256 · 02/09/2023 23:52

After years of living in flats without a garden, I wholeheartedly love hanging out my washing and watching it blowing dry. Especially my bright whites, school shirts and such like....its the simple things! 😊

TakeMeToTheCloudsAbove · 02/09/2023 23:55

Yey, I suspect I am secretly known to my neighbours as Mrs Tiggywinkle

Totallyterrific · 02/09/2023 23:59

Drying washing on the line in the garden is a true marvel.
Second best option, clothes airers aided by the dehumidifier which does a fine job of drying two loads of washing in 48 hours (sometimes 72).
We ditched our tumble dryer 10 years ago and havent ever missed it.

Totallyterrific · 03/09/2023 00:00

@PickAChew "relax the fibres" sorry what?? my fibres must be very stressed and uptight cos Ive never relaxed them!

mrsfollowill · 03/09/2023 00:02

I'm a line drying enthusiast! I've pegged washing out on a mild Boxing day before. If the concrete on the path is dry and there is a breeze it dries. Has been lovely today and much washing has been dried here. Bedding washes tomorrow- nothing as good as a fresh bed on a Sunday night. I'm so rock and roll I know ...

Storynanny1 · 03/09/2023 00:02

Me too! I say to my husband “ it’s a good drying day” - a quote from one of the Garden Gang stories - and wash everything in sight.
Im old enough to remember the lovely sight of 12 Terry nappies flapping on the line.Although I didn’t get any pleasure from the twin tub palaver first!
I did have a tumble dryer for those tricky years in between then and now, when I had 3 sport mad boys who played football 2 times a week, PE 3 times a week ( the good old days of school) and in the summer cricket 3 or 4 times a week. No way could I have coped with all of that without a dryer!

lingmerth · 03/09/2023 00:03

Me too!
I also ( bit strange maybe) like to have an order to how I line stuff up on the line. T shirts together, shorts/trousers together etc. nothing more satisfying than bringing it in dry at the end of the day.
My neighbours both sides don't even have washing lines😮 what do they do with it all?

WhatAPalaverer · 03/09/2023 00:07

The best thing ever is a line of cloth nappies drying in the sunshine. Now mine are way beyond potty training it’s getting the duvets, mattress covers, pillow covers etc done regularly.

Danikm151 · 03/09/2023 00:09

When I moved into my house after living in a flat for 5 years the first thing I did was buy a washing line and some pegs. Put it up before cleaning the house 😂 yes it was November but I was so excited.
as soon as spring hit it was used everyday it didn’t rain.
I’ve got a brilliant peg bag too 😂

It just feels softer for it in the same way as when you iron something!

Canthave2manycats · 03/09/2023 00:11

You are all quite mad!!!

We live in a house with a decent garden but have never so much as entertained the idea of having a washing line!!

Firstly, because we have both always worked FT away from home, so not there to rescue washing from the all-too-frequent rain. Secondly DH has numerous bird feeders so the washing would be guaranteed to be shat on.

I've actually never hung out washing on a line to dry, ever. Towels for instance are far softer dried in the tumble dryer!

Canthave2manycats · 03/09/2023 00:14

Oh and ironing? Just no.

I own very few clothes that need ironing. I don't iron at all. DH may do it occasionally.

I taught my friend, who used to iron babygrows, that they do just as well hung over a hot radiator and smoothed down. They get barfed on anyway.

I bought a steamer for any clothes that still end up wrinkled after being washed.

My MIL used to iron teatowels and pants...!!

HappyAsASandboy · 03/09/2023 00:25

I dread winter because it makes drying clothes a chore instead of a pleasure. I love hanging washing kit in the summer, knowing it will be dry at some point and I can get it back in. I don't even care if it rains, or if I'm hanging out in the damp and dark; I know that it'll dry soon enough when the rain stops or the mornings comes!
