Does anyone else feel great satisfaction at being able to hang laundry outside in the sun?

We don't have a tumble dryer (no space), and I feel so satisfied seeing my freshly washed laundry hanging outside in the sun. Better for the environment, dries quicker, smells nicer once dry, with the occasional waft of freshener drifting through the open window. Bonus points if it's something I can put on a hanger and hang outside, then put it straight in the wardrobe once dry.

I never thought I'd find something like this satisfying! We've never lived anywhere that could fit a tumble dryer (apart from before we moved out of our family homes), and I hate hanging stuff indoors, it just gets in the way or takes about two days to dry and fills the room up with condensation.

Anyone have any household chores just fill them with such happiness?

Another who does love the sight of a line full of washing, drying in sun and wind.
Sad though it is to admit that is what gives pleasure.
I guess I must be turning into a grown up at long last.

Oh yes! If I can get three or four washes on the line and dried all in one day I feel like Queen of the Universe.

It occurs to me that the satisfaction in getting washing dried has become almost an instinct. I mean, we've been doing this since humans first wore clothes and that's probably over 100,000 years and the oldest fabric samples found are from 34,000 years ago. That's a long time of fretting about drying laundry. So, yeah, it's a big deal!

Second load of the day is about to go out and a lot more will be done this coming week 😀

Yes mines outside at the moment and drying very quickly

Sunriseatsix · 02/09/2023 13:03

Love it! Particularly feels like magic when I manage to get a load out and in, properly dry, within a 'short' day!

itsmyp4rty · 02/09/2023 13:03

I can't say I get excited about it but I appreciate all the money it saves not having to tumble dry in the summer.

HarrietStyles · 02/09/2023 13:04

Yes it makes me so happy standing out in the garden and pegging up the washing. I lived abroad in a hot country for a few years and NO-ONE hung out their washing, all used tumble driers year round even though it probably would have dried quicker outside in the boiling hot sun! Apparently it was a social stigma and I was told “only poor people hung out their washing” 🤯

PauliesWalnuts · 02/09/2023 13:05

On load 3 here - bathmats and microfibres cloths!

tsmainsqueeze · 02/09/2023 13:10

Me , one of my favourite things , nothing like a clean bed made with fresh from the line bedding.
Years ago i read an interview with a male aristocrat -don't know who he was, and the knobhead was really snobby and judgemental of us plebs who have to dry washing outside , doesn't know what he's missing .

cushioncovers · 02/09/2023 13:11

Oh yes I find it very therapeutic hanging washing out. I've even been known to then make a cup of tea sit in the garden and glance admiringly at the full line blowing in the wind.

DustyLee123 · 02/09/2023 13:12

I just think of the electricity I’m saving 🌞

JamieandRoybromance · 02/09/2023 13:14

I love to gaze out of my kitchen window to watch the clothes on the line wafting in the wind. It's really relaxing!! Sad but true!

Babysharkdoodoodood · 02/09/2023 13:17

Yup. We got rid of the tumble dryer after discovering that ds kept putting his stuff in there, forgetting it, and putting it on again. He has to put it out now.

All goes on the line in spring/summer and when it's miserable, goes on airers overnight in front of the fire. Makes the room smell lovely in the morning.

Sheets and towels out on Monday/ Tuesday. Put the machine on timer and swan off to work knowing DH will hang it for meGrin

Yep I love it - simple pleasure of life! It's free and smells so nice. Only use tumble dryer if really necessary!

ArcticBells · 02/09/2023 13:20

I love to iron straight from the washing line Smile

addictedtotheflats · 02/09/2023 13:22

I also love it, I get excited if I've got loads of washing to do and the sun is out!

OHVanessaShanessaJenkins · 02/09/2023 13:23

It is lush. 2 loads out on mine right now.

Also as satisfying is taking a boot full of stuff to the tip.
Having a clear out and putting it all into the correct skips, returning home with a clear boot, great feeling of accomplishment and a clear spot somewhere in the house/garage.

I wish we had a like button ☺️

Yep, me too. Sheets smell and feel so much nicer.

However, I decided life is too short to hang up a gazillion socks and knickers so they get tumble dried - and no the ikea socktopus doesn’t help either, you still have to peg them!!

ZittiEBuoni · 02/09/2023 13:30

I do! This is one of those really nice everyday free pleasures of life.

ZittiEBuoni · 02/09/2023 13:31

(Having said that I realise not everyone is lucky enough to have outdoor space.)

BigBundleOfFluff · 02/09/2023 13:34

I love it. For some reason it makes me feel like I'm really competent and winning at life.

Tiredmum100 · 02/09/2023 13:34

I've got 2 loads out today, all drying lovely. I'm planning on doing all the towels tomorrow. I love line dried washing. I hate drying indoors. The washing collects cooking smells and doesn't seem as fresh. Plus, it gets in the way. Even in winter I will put the clothes on the clothes horse outside for a few hours. I do put underwear, etc, in the tumble drier in the winter. I don't like using the tumble drier for multiple reasons, cost, environment, etc.

Soontobe60 · 02/09/2023 13:34

Ive just done a load of washing today as the sun is blazing down. Meanwhile one of our neighbours has decided to bur a load of damp shrubbery behind our house 😳

JellyfishandShells · 02/09/2023 13:34

I love it. Only use the tumble drier to do the occasional fluff up at the end of towel drying.

I just drape socks over the edge of the plastic laundry basket I’ve carried the clothes out in. They never blow off unless it’s seriously windy and they dry really quickly.

I’ve got two loads out. My fave part is knowing that the sun will bleach the stains off the kids’ t shirts that the washer never quite removes. Sun works like a charm though.
