Things you can’t get your head round, e.g Non ironers

Is it just me or does anyone else not understand how people who don’t iron manage ? Whenever someone tells me they don’t iron my brain can’t compute how they manage to have clothes looking crinkle free- without consciously buying clothes that don’t need ironing! I hang clothes on coat hangers, fold consciously to avoid creasing but still have to iron things like blouses, dh shirts and my dd school skirts, for example. Do I need to buy better quality clothing, is that the key? Can any non ironers out there share their secrets please 😀🤓

Brits are just scruffy -generalising here

geoger · 26/08/2023 05:38

I don’t understand that either. No matter how carefully I smooth out creases some stuff just needs ironing.
I also don’t understand how people get by without using bleach in their home

Roselilly36 · 26/08/2023 05:39

I don’t understand it either. No way could I go out wearing something that hasn’t been ironed. I love would to know the answer too.

BunnyNumNum · 26/08/2023 05:46

I don’t iron much at all. I buy things that don’t need ironing and accept a bit of creasing on things. I will iron things for special occasions, interviews etc. DP works from home and I choose work clothes that don’t need ironing eg viscose tops rather than cotton. I avoid linen with a passion. The kids uniform is polycotton and is fine if folded smooth.

I realise we would all look a bit smarter if we ironed but I hate ironing and for me it is a trade off worth making to avoid it.

SellFridges · 26/08/2023 05:48

I don’t iron or use much bleach.

Probably get the iron out a few times a year for specific outfits or items that need it. School uniform is all non crease style and comes out of the tumble dryer just needing a shake and hanging up. I genuinely don’t know why you’d bother ironing it. Too much time?

Bleach is only used down the toilet. Not even sure when or where else I’d need to use it.

CharlotteBog · 26/08/2023 05:49

The last things I ironed were my sons' dress shirts for a wedding at the end of April.

If any of my own clothes are a bit wrinkled they drop out within a short time of wearing.

nb I wear casual clothes for work

notanaturalmum · 26/08/2023 05:50

Non ironer here.
I avoid buying fabrics that crease and I hang everything.
Other than that, wearing non ironed clothes, odd socks etc just doesn't bother me. Doesn't affect my performance in any way.

I will iron anything linen though so I'm not a complete scruff.

I don’t iron but I have a cleaner who irons. I like linen. Though honestly, if I take linen stuff out of the machine and give it a good shake and hang it properly, that’ll do. IMO it looks like a freshly ironed garment that has been worn for an hour anyway.

InvincibleInvisibility · 26/08/2023 05:53

I loathe ironing....so DH does it.

On holiday we get away with hanging tshirts on coathangers to dry and I totally understand why some people think that is sufficient, but I do think ironed looks a LOT neater.

I don't buy linen. We don't iron PJs or other random things like sheets. But all tops and shirts get ironed and some jenas/shorts if needed.

I don't understand all the air fresheners /spray fabric softener behind radiators/ zoflora tips. I don't like the smell and generally CBA. I like open windows. The one exception is our toilets which don't have a window so Ive put a reed diffuser in.

cattycardy · 26/08/2023 05:54

I'm a non-ironer! I'm 40 and never owned an iron 😂

I just can't imagine adding another level of bother to my physical appearance care. I'm a CEO though so I've definitely managed to survive and not be publicly scorned or anything for my wrinkly clothes.

The key is not caring what others think of how you look 👍

AthenaWhite · 26/08/2023 05:58

I bought a steamer which is much easier for me. Just waft it over the clothes I need on hangers. One of the best things I have ever bought. I have 2, a big one for home and a small travel one,

DurhamDurham · 26/08/2023 05:59

I haven't ironed for years and I never ironed much in the first place. My husband irons his work shirts but that's it.

I use the washing line or the tumble dryer to dry laundry and the clothes I buy always come out fine as long as they're hung up asap. I steer clear of clothes which I know would be difficult to look after (as in needing an iron Grin) but I do have lots of dresses, trousers, tops etc so I'm not limited in what I wear. Friends can't believe I don't iron so I mustn't look crumpled or they wouldn't be so surprised.

brownbeauty80 · 26/08/2023 06:03

And then the get people who iron duvet covers
Like what is the point
It's gonna get creased the moment you get in bed

spitefulandbadgrammar · 26/08/2023 06:15

Non-ironer. I don’t understand how anyone has the time.

Don’t own any bleach, either. What am I supposed to be using it for? I don’t get the Zoflora/bleach/wipes/plug-in/fabric softener crowd.

Persipan · 26/08/2023 06:18

I just don't give a crap if there are wrinkles on things, basically.

Desecratedcoconut · 26/08/2023 06:18

I iron clothes which need to look smart, shirts, uniforms, going-out for an event clothes, but I don't bother ironing everything.

I never have bleach in the house though. It's not great for lung health and it's not missed.

Willmafrockfit · 26/08/2023 06:20

if i buy anything that turns out to need ironing it only gets worn about once a year,

Pritipoll · 26/08/2023 06:22

I threw my iron away many years ago. I won't buy anything linen. Things like tshirts appear to be crumpled however smooth out on the body.

SquashPenguin · 26/08/2023 06:22

I spend most of my working day visiting construction sites safe to say my work clothes are the type that do not need ironing.

Jeans don’t need ironing, neither do jumpers. The odd tshirt gets ironed and that’s it. I don’t know how anyone can be bothered to iron bedding and tea towels

Peony654 · 26/08/2023 06:24

I rarely iron, life’s too short. We both mostly work from home and have very casual lifestyle. I rarely use bleach or any cleaning product in fact, just washing up liquid and hot water. All those chemical cleaning projects and air fresheners are the reason every kids seems to have asthma and allergies nowadays! We are rarely ill in my house

Buffypaws · 26/08/2023 06:25

I don’t get people who iron anything. I reckon I decide something needs ironing around once a year. Usually get boyfriend to do it if so.

what are people doing with bleach?

WandaWonder · 26/08/2023 06:26

I don't buy clothes that need ironing

Escapingtherealityoflife · 26/08/2023 06:27

We only iron shirts with collars. We live in a windy place and everything goes on the washing line even in winter. Afterwards it’s hung on an airer, if it needs it, then put away

Superstar22 · 26/08/2023 06:27

Don’t iron. Kids uniform all M&S non iron. Their clothes are hoodies, t shirts & shorts - none need ironing and I don’t use tumble dryer for those, just maiden then hang up or fold shorts in half.

same for me & DH. He wears work shirts but they’re usually checked so they don’t need ironing… nothing does really… none of my clothes do. I don’t think I could find things that need ironing tbh… we look near and tidy we certainly don’t look crumpled 🤷🏻‍♀️
