Things you can’t get your head round, e.g Non ironers

Is it just me or does anyone else not understand how people who don’t iron manage ? Whenever someone tells me they don’t iron my brain can’t compute how they manage to have clothes looking crinkle free- without consciously buying clothes that don’t need ironing! I hang clothes on coat hangers, fold consciously to avoid creasing but still have to iron things like blouses, dh shirts and my dd school skirts, for example. Do I need to buy better quality clothing, is that the key? Can any non ironers out there share their secrets please 😀🤓

We don’t wear blouses or shirts which probably helps a lot. I have a “relax creases” setting on my dryer which takes 10 mins so will occasionally throw a couple of things in there if they’ve ended up wrinkly

isthismylifenow · 26/08/2023 06:27

I mostly wear cotton and linen and everything gets ironed.

I'm with you OP.

I don't buy the cheapest items and I take care of what I have so it lasts. That includes them being washed, ironed and stored correctly.

I like my cupboards tidy so linen is also ironed. There is nothing better than getting into a clean bed with an ironed duvet cover.

Tiddlywinks63 · 26/08/2023 06:27

I actually quite enjoy ironing, I can’t stand crumpled, creased clothing. I have always done it, even when working a 50 hour week.

Morghulis · 26/08/2023 06:30

Think it’s partially a generation thing. We are in our early 30s and rarely iron anything unless it’s the occasional wedding/funeral. We both work in casual offices. Partner may iron the odd T-shirt if it’s particularly creased.

but then I think most people my age are the same so guess we all don’t mind go around looking “crumpled”… can’t say I give it much thought.

I bought a steamer which is much easier for me. Just waft it over the clothes I need on hangers. One of the best things I have ever bought. I have 2, a big one for home and a small travel one,

Exactly this. Steamed clothes look better than ironed and it takes a fraction of the time. My ironing board hasn't seen the light of day in the 7 years since I bought a steamer. Ironing is so passé!

PurpleWhirple · 26/08/2023 06:36

Seems to be a reasonable correlation between those who don't iron and also not understanding why all the bleach.

Perhaps we are all just lazy and filthy.
I have never seen the need for either. Who can be arsed ironing, and why are your houses so dirty that you need to bleach them??

27Mankinis · 26/08/2023 06:38

I like ironing. I do it on Sunday afternoons in front of a film while drinking wine. I like having the family ready and fresh for the week ahead.

That said- I was brought up being a total scruff as my parents just did not care and my mother was felled by depression most of the time and I was seriously bullied for a while for how I was dressed and turned out. Also I now have a disabled child and he gets enough shit in his life that him being smartly turned out is quite important to me... it's something about his life that I can make okay.

We also use bleach in our house. Mainly because we have old and very incontinent animals and bleach of course neutralises urine and the smell!

Escapingtherealityoflife · 26/08/2023 06:39

Forgot to say- we are in our 50s and most of our clothes are natural fibres. If you get something folded or hung up fresh off the line there’s no need to iron.

Escapingtherealityoflife · 26/08/2023 06:40

We don’t use bleach because we have a septic tank.

Supersares · 26/08/2023 06:42

Thanks for all the lovely tips, it’s helping me overcome my non ironer confusion! I’ve consciously avoided using my tumble drier (shrinks some items & economy) but I do have the luxury of a large airing cupboard with a clothes rail in that I can hang clothes in. DH can start doing his own shirts 🤓, when I’m buying clothes be more mindful of the ironing implication.
I’ve never ironed bedding as don’t see the point, I know people who do though. Years ago, an ex’s mum used to do his washing for him. She used to iron his boxers and thought that was complete madness!
I used to detest ironing but think I’ve just accepted it now and got on with it. I stick Netflix on to ease the boredom 😂

I only iron if needed. Guess I'm just a 'scruffy Brit' 🙄.

AgentProvocateur · 26/08/2023 06:46

I don’t own an iron. Hated ironing and found it tedious. DH sends his shirts out once a week and that’s it. I also can’t understand the love for febreeze, zoflora, plug ins etc. They are headache inducing.

fizzyfood · 26/08/2023 06:46

I don't understand why people have plug in air fresheners, they're literally just smelly chemicals and can't be good for anyone.

itsallnewnow · 26/08/2023 06:47

I'm in the non ironing camp! Dd is at nursery. DH works in a job that suits comfy clothes under coveralls(mechanic) I have nice clothes for the office but we're more smart jeans and nice top brigade. We iron for special events only!

I totally agree fizzyfood. I don’t get that one, unless they’re indoor smokers or to mask pet smells?

i dont have bleach as have ruined clothes with it, but it makes me cough

avocadotofu · 26/08/2023 06:50

Another non ironer here. I buy things that don't need to be ironed and don't really mind a few creases. My husband irons his own shirts etc so we aren't a non ironer household.

Proudgypsy · 26/08/2023 06:51

I'm an ironing fiend. I iron absolutely everything, even bedding and underwear.

sashh · 26/08/2023 06:52

Another non ironer.

Things like suits are washed and then hung on hangers to dry.

T shirts, joggers etc, wash, dry, put in drawers.

Floppyfrog · 26/08/2023 06:52

I work 50 hours a week, 2dc, I don't have the time to spend on something that will be undone within 10 minutes of wear. My commute is 2 hours when I go in to the office once a week and any ironing has certainly been ruined by then.

Ambi · 26/08/2023 06:53

I used to spend hours ironing on a Sunday like my Mum. I don't bother anymore, barely use the iron. The kids school shirts are non iron and not that creased and are covered by pinafores/ cardigan/ blazer. The only thing I iron are new curtains.

terraced · 26/08/2023 06:53

I don't iron. Agree with others - it's not that important and I've better things to do with my time.

Writingonthewalls · 26/08/2023 06:55

I only use bleach down the toilets ( hate toilet brushes and have never had them), and for grouting. I don’t use it for anything else. I’m curious what others use it for.
I do iron because I have some linen clothes and I iron t towels, pillowcases , trousers etc. there are some clothes that look awful if they aren’t ironed. People who wear crumpled clothes look a mess. I am interested in the steamer idea though. Must get one . Any recommendations?

I also don't understand these. They give me a headache

Faradalla · 26/08/2023 06:56

I've mentioned my 'hand ironing' before. I sit in front of the TV and smooth out wet clothes by hand. Then I pop everything on the clothes horse and it dries so crease free (I live in a hot country so clothes dry very quickly). Its so effective that don't bother ironing the kids things. I do iron my own things some of the time but it takes a fraction of the time. I also don't understand how grown ups get their clothing so crease free that they don't need to iron at all.
