I o ky iron my linen everything else I don't bother

Zippedydodah · 14/07/2023 17:53

I happily iron whilst listening to podcasts. I don’t like the look of creased and crumpled cotton/ linen etc clothes. I love ironed bed linen 😍

Tummelthecat · 14/07/2023 17:56

The devil invented ironing and I would rather stab my eyes out with a fork than pick up that sodding iron.

WeightoftheWorld · 14/07/2023 18:05

Im the same. I iron as little as possible and use the steam bit liberally.

If it's a very difficult fabric and it still looks crap I get DH to have a go as he's much better than me.

All I iron atm is work clothes but I only work in the office 1-2 days a week, and I will iron if I'm going on a night out or to a party but that's very rare. I guess I will have to start doing DC's uniform too though once they start reception.

Steam generator I hate ironing absolutely loathe it but I can't send my DS to school in wrinkled clothes. I can blast through 2 weeks worth of uniform and clothes in approx 40 mins with my steam generator you don't have to faff about ironing both sides of the garment.

This
I bought one creases literally run away from it
also vertical steam function takes a fraction of the time compared with normal iron

It's not so much a badge of honor as the realisation that life is too short to iron. Most clothes these days don't actually need ironing if you hang them up properly and if a few items end up a bit crumpled so what? If people care enough to judge you about your kid being in a slightly crumpled t-shirt then that says more about them than you.

Even if they are still a bit crumpled, they either fall out with your body heat or you get new ones from wearing them.

Ironing is very much not my jam!

Danikm151 · 14/07/2023 19:31

Iron?

oooooh the big paperweight that sits in the front room!

pro tip- straightners on kids trousers or shirt collars. Also the bottom of dresses if they’re a bit crumpled 😁

VillageLite · 14/07/2023 19:33

I enjoy ironing. Quiet room, radio on, no distractions, I like to take my time over it. There’s something very satisfying for me in reducing a crumpled heap of clothes into neat little folded piles.

I iron shirts straight from the washing machine to get them looking really crisp.

Indeed. Also by the time you've commuted to work your clothes have creases in them anyway whether you ironed them or not. Honestly I couldn't tell you which, if any of my colleagues have ironed their clothes and nor do we notice if kids come to school in unironed uniform it is something that would be so far down our list of stuff to notice it wouldn't even make the list.

If it's something that will crumple, it very much gets pushed to the back of my wardrobe anyway no matter how nice it is.

It's flipping school trousers that are the worst to be tumble dried and coming out looking like a map of a mountain range. Thankfully I no longer have to deal with those.

Makinglists · 14/07/2023 19:43

Don't- I had a mantra that my kids would always have access to clean clothes but not ironed. Most things look OK if you put them in a steamy bathroom for a few mins. Just think of the electricity saved and the environmental benefit!!😁

FindingTheFox · 14/07/2023 23:24

I find I can get away with not ironing most of my winter clothes. Summer os a different matter though as I wear a lot of linen. But I can't stand ironing so my cleaner does it.

UsingChangeofName · 14/07/2023 23:43

Because you've titled your thread "Ironing, Yes or no?" then you are just going to get all the sensible people folk that don't iron opening the thread, to say "No".

I think if you are looking for tips to help, you'll probably have to start a new thread with that in the title.

Echio · 15/07/2023 16:59

Things are so much nicer to put on when they're ironed- I even iron socks, they go on your feet a lot more easily and just feel so much better!

Anyway- tips ....

  1. get a big ironing board (you can iron more in one sweep = a lot quicker)
  2. as soon as clothes are washed/dry, hang things up and/or fold sheets neatly and it all irons in half the time
  3. use a lot of steam - typically I always use a notch up from suggested
  4. focus on the important areas - necklines, flattening out hems, etc, and speed over the rest
  5. don't fuss too much if you iron in a crease or you'll be there forever
  6. just iron both sides at once when there's not a lot of shaping (like a-line dresses etc)
  7. hang up on hangers straight after ironing

It's very rare I notice anyone else having 'not ironed' though, so maybe I'm an idiot and wasting all this time!!

Also you’ll get lots of of liberated MNetters who say they haven’t ironed anything since 1905 and don’t even own an ironing board, but I think creased clothes look dreadful so I keep mine just incase.

Floralnomad · 15/07/2023 17:01

I don’t iron , anything that needs ironing goes to the ironing lady .

Malarandras · 15/07/2023 17:02

Best tip for ironing? Don’t!

Most of the clothes in our house don’t need ironed. Those that could maybe do with it, what’s the worse that could happen? Someone thinks the worst of us for having clothes that are not ironed? As if I care one jot about that!!! I have never ironed and I can honestly say it is one the best decisions of my life.

angharadsgoat · 15/07/2023 17:03

Fold or hang what you can immediately after drying (tumble or line) anything remaining try to iron little and often. I'm guilty of letting it build up to mountainous proportions.

Though my teenager will occasionally iron t-shirts (their own) for money!

ASGIRC · 15/07/2023 19:56

Parisj · 14/07/2023 11:53

I opted out of ironing years ago and just avoided linens, however I have now got a handheld steamer. You just hang the item on a hanger from a doorway or something and then press the button and move the steamer from top to bottom while holding the fabric taught. And no ironing pile, I just do it when I want to wear it, works for me.

Exactly what Ive done! This way, if something looks particularly bad, I can give it a once over with the steamer, but Im not slaving over an ironing board!

LatteLady · 15/07/2023 20:05

I enjoy it but I think it is because I was taught to iron properly by my mum. It is like anything, it is easier the more you do it. I also do a fair bit of sewing, so I plug in the iron before my machine.

RabbitsRock · 15/07/2023 20:07

I absolutely loath ironing & never do it! If I need an item ironing I ask DH as he was trained in The Navy & can do it beautifully!

Louloulouenna · 15/07/2023 20:07

I do a lot of ironing and use a spray bottle of water, particularly useful for cotton and linen.

2Rebecca · 15/07/2023 20:10

I dressmake and material needs ironing pattern pieces need ironing many of my clothes need ironing. I'd find it really restrictive to only wear unironed clothing

Diversion · 15/07/2023 20:12

My Mum was a super ironer, ironed, socks, pants, towels, tea towels etc etc, loved ironing and used to comment if people had creased clothing. She even ironed my husbands holey jeans which he wore to his farm job under his boiler suit when I was recovering from a C section. I gave up ironing about 2 years ago unless something was extremely creased or we were going somewhere important. Mum died last year, I never told her that I no longer ironed, she would have been horrified.

DisforDarkChocolate · 15/07/2023 20:14

I buy clothes that don't need ironing.
I dry most things on the hanger, far less creases.
I have a clothes steamer, I actually enjoy using this.
