I find it difficult and not good at it.
Any tips?

Don’t do it? Honestly very little gets ironed in my house but I hang clothes up when the washing machine finished and they dry pretty smooth.

HereToo · 14/07/2023 11:49

Only iron what you really need to. Lots of fabrics today don’t really need ironing and washing machines and detergents have really improved.

I tend to hang my clothes up the minute the machine stops and that helps too.

DustyLee123 · 14/07/2023 11:50

i don’t iron.

Xrays · 14/07/2023 11:51

I don’t iron. I just hang anything that needs de creasing straight up on hangers out of the wash.

ScarletWitchM · 14/07/2023 11:51

I don’t iron unless needed but did invest in a steam generator iron and a good ironing board which makes the few things that need ironing much easier

HereToo · 14/07/2023 11:52

Also you’ll get lots of of liberated MNetters who say they haven’t ironed anything since 1905 and don’t even own an ironing board, but I think creased clothes look dreadful so I keep mine just incase.

Xiaoxiong · 14/07/2023 11:52

Hang clothes flat or on hangers to minimise creasing
Hang creased clothes in a steamy bathroom and smooth with your hands
Tumble dry for 10 mins (works well with "non-iron" school shirts)
Buy clothes that don't crease (if you have a choice)
Wear creased clothes and just deal with the first 10 mins - after that, even the best ironed clothing gets creased anyway
Outsource as much as you can (each family member irons own clothes if they want ironed clothes, if they don't want to iron either then they sort themselves out). So you should only iron your own stuff where YOU care about it being ironed.

Failing all of the above, put a really gory true crime podcast on headphones and blitz it.

(Can you tell I hate ironing and will do anything to get out of it)

I opted out of ironing years ago and just avoided linens, however I have now got a handheld steamer. You just hang the item on a hanger from a doorway or something and then press the button and move the steamer from top to bottom while holding the fabric taught. And no ironing pile, I just do it when I want to wear it, works for me.

wonderstuff · 14/07/2023 11:54

I’ve got a small steamer which I prefer to the iron, I try to buy clothes that don’t need ironing and just don’t iron often. I put school uniforms in the tumble dryer which gets creases out.

Neverknowinglysensible · 14/07/2023 11:56

I hate ironing and am really bad at it. Husband’s shirts go to the ironing woman if he doesn’t do them himself. I can just about manage a T shirt and luckily my own style is very plain and boring simple so I don’t have anything frilly or complicated.

FiveShelties · 14/07/2023 11:56

Iron whilst the item is damp, makes it easier.

I wish I did not have to iron but some of our stuff just has to be ironed or they look like rags.

zerocapacity · 14/07/2023 12:10

I hang clothes up on clothes dryer after washing but there are occasional things that do need more.

I have got hand held steamer but not mastered using it like I've seen in these fashion shops.

Does anyone use any particular washing powder, fabric conditioner or ironing spray that helps?

lostinfusion · 14/07/2023 12:31

crease release spray & only iron when essential (I don't iron anything)

AnnaNims · 14/07/2023 12:34

We iron only once in a blue moon. We just fold when it comes out of the dryer.

I used to spend hours each week ironing and I’m not sure why.

weleasewoderick23 · 14/07/2023 12:35

I love ironing and take great pleasure in it. I worked in a Chinese laundry as a Saturday job when I was at school many years ago, and spending all day ironing stuff and putting in tissue paper means that nothing compares in terms of effort.

Maybe I should start a business 🧐

GerbilMum26 · 14/07/2023 16:16

I personally haven’t ironed anything other than hama beads in about a decade!
my parents still iron, and what I like is that in the 25yrs they have been married my mum has never ironed any of his work shirts! Instead they have always ironed their own clothes, and shared the children’s etc.
my mum said this works for them as then she’s never got the stress of accidentally damaging a work shirt and they share the load.
me being clumsy asf have many memories of walking through doorways and knocking all my dads freshly ironed shirts down… 😬😂

mommybear1 · 14/07/2023 16:59

Steam generator I hate ironing absolutely loathe it but I can't send my DS to school in wrinkled clothes. I can blast through 2 weeks worth of uniform and clothes in approx 40 mins with my steam generator you don't have to faff about ironing both sides of the garment.

BigFatLiar · 14/07/2023 17:05

I have a husband who quite likes ironing so it's easy. I never did it right so he does it and doesn't mind. He doesn't iron everything and if it's a bit dry has a spray to dampen plus uses spray starch on some things

CarrieOnBoris · 14/07/2023 17:10

If you must iron anything, try a handheld steamer.

tracylamont13 · 14/07/2023 17:14

I don't iron.

Squashyy · 14/07/2023 17:14

I don't understand how people don't need to iron? My DS clothes look like they've been crumpled into balls whether they're tumble dried or on the clothes horse Envy they definitely need ironed and I hate ironing with an absolute passion. Any tips very welcome Grin

GetInTheBinThenGetInTheSea · 14/07/2023 17:19

I don't iron. I take some of the clothes out of the washing machine when they're still quite damp, spin the remaining clothes, take some out, repeat, then tumble dry only things that won't crease. Or else, it's a short tumble dry, and again take some things out and return the rest.

Most things won't crease if you hang them up neatly at the right dampness.

It's a pain, but I prefer it to ironing!

VisionsOfSplendour · 14/07/2023 17:24

Mumsnet is a weird world where avoiding the iron is some kind of (crumpled) badge of honor 😀

It's not so much a badge of honor as the realisation that life is too short to iron. Most clothes these days don't actually need ironing if you hang them up properly and if a few items end up a bit crumpled so what? If people care enough to judge you about your kid being in a slightly crumpled t-shirt then that says more about them than you.

Judging by all the faffing about that not ironing seems to involve I know I can do a whole weeks worth in much less time than that and still have plenty of time for everything else I want to do

Its not about what anyone else thinks, I dont care about that, my persobal preference is to have ironed clothes.
