Is changing my sheets twice a week too much?

Not DC's just mine. I love getting into fresh linen. Am I just making a rod for my own back, or does anyone else do this?

I mostly sleep alone (woe is me, but then I get to starfish! & I sleep like a fidgety twat). I no longer have a set routine. My bed is well aired (that's my excuse for not making it!! I throw the sheet and/or duvet back every morning and the bedroom windows are open all year around, and rotate the pillows (or being exact, manically swap them around for a cooler one all night).

I guess I usually get a fresh set twice a week in the summer and once a week in the winter. But it's not a set thing.

I wonder how many children the "bad for the environment " crowd have produced...

One. The OP also has at least one.

EmeraldFox · 19/06/2023 07:14

I also haven't flown in six years (that was one way), as flights were also previously mentioned.

RocketIceLollie · 19/06/2023 07:16

Once week here usually but these last few weeks during the heatwave yeah it's been more like twice weekly. It's been so sticky this weather at night.

itsmellslikepopcarn · 19/06/2023 07:20

usually once a week for me, maybe every 5 days in summer.

No I don't have staff!! Just a cleaner who changes the beds twice a week. And no my dh far from being unpleasant would change them himself if she didn't!

Dacadactyl · 19/06/2023 08:15

Seems a lot to me, i couldnt be arsed with that. In general I wash bedding once a fortnight here.

butwhyyyyyy · 19/06/2023 08:16

If you enjoy it do it. I find twice a week decent for hot summer nights and once a week sufficient in colder times unless there's been something to dirty them sooner of course.
It's one of life's pleasures to get into a freshly made bed.
There used to be a strong almost neurotic fixation on cleanliness on MN but over the years I suppose the younger generations becoming mums and finding MN have been more relaxed with hygiene standards and more environment conscious or at least that's the excuse for slacking standards ;)
You do you babes as they say.

ripplingwater · 19/06/2023 08:18

I wouldnt judge you from an environmental perspective, I bet half the people who are criticising drive cars, go on planes, have kids etc

But, I couldnt be arsed with the faff of it. I change mine weekly and we all shower daily, sometimes twice if its boiling hot so I dont feel its necessary- the sheets still feel clean. As a compromise you could just change the pillow cases if you feel its too much?

How deeply insecure have you got to be, to need strangers’ approval of your sheet-changing schedule?

Yep - that.

Do what ever the heck you want - I really don't think anyone gives one.

As I said to pp, it is deeply weird that you think starting a thread about something to find out how people outside your own family do things is the same as asking for permission.

Fresh bed sheet night is one of my favourite nights.
If there was no environmental consideration and I had someone else to do it I'd have clean bedsheets every day.

As it is I am concerned about the environment and I'm quite lazy so every other week is my pattern. More if ill or sweaty.

We wear night clothes. Have no pets in the bed. Shower daily and air the bed daily so this works for us.

@continentallentil if you're concerned about mama Earth 🤮then you need to know that the short wash cycle is LESS environmentally friendly on most machines. (It ups the agitation which uses more electricity than the longer cycles that 'soak' more to get things clean).

I always wonder if this is a myth. My smart meter tells me the short cycle does uses less

avocadotofu · 19/06/2023 09:38

That's too often for me. Our cleaner changes ours once a week.

I agree OP. A chat form for chatting. Fwiw I do mine weekly but more if it's hot. I work as a carer in people's homes and we do A Lot of washing due to incontinence, so I can't get too exercised about an occasional extra wash at home.
Like you I don't fly. I also don't have a big shopping habit. Everyone has different focus when it comes to environmental concerns.

I imagine it depends on the washing machine. Our short cycle also uses less energy, according to the smart meter.

wildfirewonder · 19/06/2023 09:51

This is an odd thread - how can you possibly make a rod for your own back when you can just stop anytime you like?

I personally care about environmental impact but each person's/household's environmental impact is best assessed in the round not on one very small aspect - so someone may wash their sheets less often but make other decisions that offset that - lifetime (style?) energy/water use is complicated.

Growlybear83 · 19/06/2023 09:55

I don't change my sheets that often but agree that the feeling of getting into bed with freshly washed and ironed crisp sheets is lovely, especially if they've been dried outside.

MindfulBear · 19/06/2023 09:55

You do you!! If it makes you happy, why not?!

Unless it is some kind of obsessive compulsive behaviour. In which case a spot of therapy might help.

If someone said they loved to have fresh flowers every week that would be acceptable. Why not clean sheets?!

DatingDinosaur · 19/06/2023 19:30

At least twice weekly for me at the moment. Perimenopause night sweats plus hot weather do not happy bedfellows make. I refuse to get back into damp bedding, no matter how clean I am or my sweat is.

If I won the lottery I'd pay someone to change them every day and sod the environment.

So does ours, as the eco setting will only go down to 40 degrees

"getting back into damp bedding" - how on earth does that work in this hot weather? Or any weather for that matter!

DatingDinosaur · 19/06/2023 20:29

It's like putting the same sweaty gym clothes on two days on the trot despite having a shower.

Except these are often synthetic and in direct contact with armpits and groin. Bedding isn't.
