A vacuum that actually sucks stuff up?!

Can anyone recommend a vacuum cleaner that actually sucks stuff up? 🤦🏼‍♀️ We have a Dyson cordless at the moment (albeit an older version) and an upright corded Dyson but both are useless on my laminate floors. Anything bigger than a crumb the cordless won’t pick up, and the upright Dyson just pushes stuff across the floor without actually sucking it up, it's infuriating! So I end up on my hands and knees under the dining table after every sodding meal sweeping everything up with a dustpan and brush first, and then going over it with the cordless Dyson afterwards. Maybe I'm being lazy but I just want to be able to hoover it all up in one go! 🤣 We're living in 2023 surely in this day and age there is a vacuum capable of picking up Cheerios and smushed up breadsticks and stuff? Or am I just resigned to a life of sweeping first? 🥴 I'm not bothered about it being cordless or corded, I just want something to do the job. Needs to be upright, I'd prefer something compact like a stick vacuum so it's easier to store away. Not really keen on cylinder vacs as I want something I can just push along. Has anyone got a really good vacuum that they would recommend? Thank you!

Miele, with the pets attachment. It sucks up EVERYTHING.

Hecate01 · 09/05/2023 10:28

Another vote for Henry here. I work in housekeeping for a large hotel and we have about 30 of them. The good thing is you can buy all the parts separately if anything does break and as for hoover bags, I order the cheaper ones from Amazon and EBay. Bearing in mind we are using them everyday and they are picking up a lot we don't go through that many really and we've washed the filters and they come up as good as new. The only downside is he's bulky, at home I have a cordless dyson for a quick clean up but when I'm having a proper clean I use Henry.

TheInterceptor · 09/05/2023 10:29

All hail, Henry!

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 09/05/2023 10:30

Potentially stupid question OP but have you snipped and pulled out any tangled hair in the brush? Long hair will stop even the best vacuum doing its job.

2bazookas · 09/05/2023 10:30

SEBO . It's a German make, very well designed and effective.

Spareincoming · 09/05/2023 10:31

Henry all the way; I’ve given up on countless dysons and even a Miele and gone back to Henry. I should have learned a lesson when all you see in hotels is Henry’s or other numatic versions of henry
Plus there’s only about 6 parts that go wrong and they’re cheap to fix.

@Dillya that’s likely to be the copper contacts on the cable reel - mine has done that in the past; youtube showed me how to fix it and it was easy and cheap!

evtheria · 09/05/2023 10:32

You can buy off-brand reusable bags, which is great for reducing long term cost and waste, but obviously a bit more hassle emptying etc.

The bags usually last 2-6mths, but I don't push mine until bursting as I felt it reduced suction and put a lot of wear on the vacuum cleaner.

Treaclemine · 09/05/2023 10:37

I have a cordless Shark, pre the antihair version. I hate it. Twenty minutes use followed by half an hour cleaning the tube. It has an angle between the floor part and a small piece of paper will trap everything else in a thick wodge. Other tools OK. I have a John Lewis stick which is good for stick things. And a Gtech Air ram which sucks well, but doesn't come with tools.

Stratocumulus · 09/05/2023 10:38

Henry corded for downstairs. Love it. Fab for the car too. Sucks up everything in sight so actually you have to be careful!

It’s my replacement for the bigger Edward which I had for 30 years and gave away to a builder for his kind of professional mess!

Shark corded for upstairs. We never wear shoes upstairs but in any case it’s fab and works really well.

MissLucyLiu · 09/05/2023 10:46

Miele C3

Does Henry/Hetty actually suck up big stuff though? Like Cheerios, breadsticks, cornflakes etc? I used one years ago and it was truly shit, had to go over the same patch of carpet 6/7 times for it to pick anything up!

Yes. Everything including rubble. It's a demon
Their cordless is absolutely great too

Growlybear83 · 09/05/2023 10:56

I've had so many vaccuum cleaners over the years but two have been head and shoulders above the others. I think the cleaner with the best suction I've ever had is a Hoover Hurricane. I had my first one for about ten years and replaced it last with with my mother in law's one when she went into care. It was the cheapest of any cleaner I've ever bought at £35 on Amazon, but it looks as though Home Bargains have them for £59.99. Both of mine have been way better than the two dysons I've owned.

I inherited my mum's Gtech cleaners and have been very very impressed by them. They are cordless and the charge lasts for long enough to clean my whole house at least three times.

Aslanplustwo · 09/05/2023 11:13

I'm not in the UK, but I always buy Hoovers. They have great suction, and are cheap to buy. I think bagged cleaners work much better than bagless - yes, you have to pay for the bags, but it's so easy to whip the old one out and replace it. We have Dyson sticks at work, it's an office building so doesn't get dirty, but the Dysons don't work that well for long, whereas my Hoover just keeps sucking up the pet hair without missing a beat.

Missingmyusername · 09/05/2023 11:17

Henry pet.

gettingoldisshit · 09/05/2023 11:18

Another vote for henry! Ive had all the expensive ones like shark and dyson and they always end up losing suction or blocking easily ( shark was the worst ever!) and I always go back to henry.

linziere · 09/05/2023 11:21

We have the pet GTech air ram - handles cheerios chucked on the floor by our toddler and bunny poop, bunny hair and hay from the rabbit. The hay in particular is a struggle but the gtech is ace for it.

TeamSleep · 09/05/2023 11:32

OP. I’ve never changed the filter on my Henry and I buy non branded replacement bags which I change probably three times a year.

Orcubed · 09/05/2023 11:36

Am I the only one who hates Henry? We have one, and a titan because our house is a renovation project (and a plasterer fucked my beloved Miele cat and dog by hoovering up plaster dust and over filling the bag which then exploded and sent plaster dust into the motor 😡) and while the Henry is good for sucking up bits by using just the nozzle I don’t feel it does anything whilst hoovering normally-seems to just push bits along on the hard floors and not get anything out of the carpet. Plus it’s so cumbersome and gets stuck everywhere.

Orcubed · 09/05/2023 11:40

I love my shark corded (although the hose isn’t long enough for my liking) and the cordless version seems to deal with my kids’ dropped food fine too. Eufy cordless is also good.

FufferPish · 09/05/2023 11:43

I had a Shark cordless, and it was shit and did the useless pushing around on my wooden floors. Best one was the Bosch Athlet, but that one had to be thrown out when the battery stopped working or pay more than the vacuum cost to have the battery fixed!

madmumofteens · 09/05/2023 11:46

Another vote for Miele I always had a Henry but last one I had wasn't nearly as good suction 😘

HermioneWeasley · 09/05/2023 11:50

Our Miele pet (with a bag) is still incredible after 6 years. I persisted with various expensive bagels options and they were all crap after a year

BramblyHedgeMouse · 09/05/2023 12:35

I had a Henry type vacuum cleaner and it was fine on hard floors and laminate but not good on carpets.
I’ve replaced it now but I since discovered you can get a special turbo attachment that should work better. You have to buy them in the Numatic website as they don’t sell them in Curry’s or Argos, or on EBay and they’re only about £30.

I know you want something a little modern and tidy...

But this legend will pick up anything.

Lego, toast, socks, banana skins, crayons...Basically anything that comes in his path is forever forgotten about in my house 🤣

He really is a legend and goes on for ever

wholerhubarbcustard · 09/05/2023 12:40

I had a shark after recommendations from friends...it's didn't last a year. I went back and bought a Hetty, defo the best hoovers.
