How to make house smell nice?

Any ideas how I can make my home smell nicer? I'd prefer not to use artificial air fresheners full of chemicals and it's too cold to just open a window!

Jesus. Life's too short, I'll continue with my plug-ins!! 😂

Thanks for your ideas! I've got a new baby so not much time for doing a deep clean at the moment, but you have made me realise I need to do more. Never thought about the carpets and curtains etc. I will try to open windows, especially when spring arrives. I'm just someone who feels the cold very easily and hates draughts!
I'm going to look into essential oils for a diffuser as that sounds like the best option.

Do a quick look online before using a diffuser as some essential oils shouldn’t be used around infants.

Hyacinths make the house smell beautifully!

Can't stand the smell of hyacinths! Gives me a headache.

Sparklybutold · 24/02/2023 10:26

Don't have kids. Don't have dogs.

Pancakes2023 · 24/02/2023 10:41

@Oakdoor1 thanks for the heads up! After researching online I think I'm going to return the diffuser I ordered last night to be on the safe side 🙈. What's safest around babies - an electric wax melter maybe better??

@TheChosenTwo bleach is quite definitely not toxic to marine life! It evaporates.

Zoflora on the other hand is.

What???

bleach is literally one of the most toxic house hold chemicals to marine life.

Do candles not feature on the list of particulate producers?
Air freshener and wax melts can't be good for human lungs.

Oakdoor1 · 24/02/2023 14:47

I’d still use the diffuser over wax melts to be honest. They have other chemicals in them as far as I’m aware. Chamomile and lavender is fine round infants. Bicarbonate with some essential oils mixed in then sieved over carpets is a good way to deodorise your carpets and leaves the house smelling nice.

Forgot to quote you, my reply is above

I’ve got a Neom pod that I use their oils in downstairs. I can’t use a lot of smelly things, because I get migraines from smelly things like Yankee candles and wax melts. Upstairs I’ve got reed diffusers from Chapter Organics. They’re pricey, but so nice, and not overpowering. Their candles are gorgeous too, they’re the only ones I can use without getting a headache.

Open windows daily/light incense (I use Chinese Temple incense) oil in burners & on radiators

BatshitCrazyWoman · 25/02/2023 06:53

Agree with the window opening - do it when you're cleaning.

I also put a drop of lemongrass essential oil on a torn off piece of kitchen roll and put it in my vacuum cleaner - smells lovely when I'm hoovering.

I find the underlying smell of Zoflora catches the back of my throat and makes me cough - it isn't a nice smell (to me) at all.

CurrentHun · 25/02/2023 07:06

Don’t use bloody Zoflora! It pollutes waterways. Presumably you and your kids all have a private watersource all of your own to drink from that’s secured just for your use for the next few centuries?

And plus it’s extremely dangerous for pets like dogs, cats, and reptiles. www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/10711255/dog-lover-zolfora-warning-poisoned-mrs-hinch-favourite/

I can’t understand why anyone would use something that poisonous in their own home when there are non-toxic easily available alternatives.

turrrniiipz · 25/02/2023 07:08

It's usually soft furnishings that need seeing to.

I use febreeze on the rugs and curtains, and wash them properly maybe every 6 months or so. Curtains on a delicate hand wash cycle and use a carpet cleaning machine on the rugs and carpets with nice smelling carpet shampoo.

I put cushion covers through the wash every few weeks or whenever the kids get something on them.

I always have a wax burner on, I have it plugged in hidden behind the tv so the kids can't see it or knock it over.

Reed diffusers are also good for putting around the house.

I wash bath towels and the shower curtain regularly so they don't start to smell musty.

Weekly i disinfect and dust all surfaces and mop hard floors with nice smelling floor cleaner.

Theoldwoman · 03/03/2023 13:21

Cats and dogs dishes washed immediately after use.
All windows opened daily.
Laundry done daily.
Towels hung outside to dry.
Cushion covers, throw rugs and pet bedding washed weekly.
Rubbish taken out each day.
Fridge wiped out every few days.
Running shoes washed regularly.
Toilet cleaned daily.
Clean benches with hot water and dawn dishwashing liquid.
Change bedding weekly.

burgledinParis · 25/03/2023 12:00

As said,

Open the windows as much as you can - if you can open on all sides and get a big breeze coming through, do this even if only for 5 minutes.

If you think the small might be coming from fabrics - wash the curtains if you can. Sprinkle carpets and sofa with bicarb and leave for as long as you can bare then hoover up.

Put a few drops of essential oil on your hoover filter.

Clean as much as you can with strong white vinegar.

Buy a tea light candle diffuser and get essential oils from Amazon. Lemon eucalyptus is my particular favourite. Makes the house smell delicious. Better than reed diffusers.

Could you send a link to this oil please? Thanks 🙏

Slimjimtobe · 27/03/2023 23:19

A good clean and citronella essential oil (it’s strong and lovely)
