How to make house smell nice?

Any ideas how I can make my home smell nicer? I'd prefer not to use artificial air fresheners full of chemicals and it's too cold to just open a window!

God I’m obsessed with my house smelling nice. I use a diffuser during the day, a couple actually and I light scented candles at night .

I’ve a couple of these diffusers, they are portable, and designed to look like candles, so you can move them about as you wish and they last eight hours when set to every thirty seconds. I use one in the hall and one in the living room. You can also get really cheap ones for about 20 quid from Amazon which work just as well to be honest.

I like Ylang Ylang and amber essential oils. Just a few drops of each in the little water well, but at Xmas I use things like ginger bread or caramel.

Asthmatic here. Please do not use Shake n Vac or buy Hyacinths if you've got anyone with breathing difficulties.

Aldi have a pomegranate reed/oil thingie. It smells lovely and can mask any smell. My DSs have them in their rooms to get rid of the stench.

They also do a hand wash and wax melts. I think it's called No 3.

tootrueblue · 23/02/2023 21:01

I do most of the things mentioned above as I have dogs. Only extra thing I do is zoflora in the kitchen sink in the morning with the window open. Freshens everything first thing

Ponderingwindow · 23/02/2023 21:02

Spritz a little vinegar into the air. Once the room stops smelling like pickles, foul odors will also be gone.

tatteddear · 23/02/2023 21:03

Boil some lemons and rosemary sprigs if you have them in a pan of water on your stove. Makes the house smell lovely.

Supersimkin2 · 23/02/2023 21:16

If you’ve got a baby, the house will smell unless you open the windows daily.

Hoover with zoflora in the drum, rubbish out. Wear a jersey if you’re still cold. The place will heat up soon enough.

thefatpotato · 23/02/2023 22:02

No artificial smell is going to smell as good as a clean, well aired house.

If the temperature is above about 8, I'll open the windows in the bedrooms for 30 minutes in the morning. I don't make the beds until they've had a good airing. Wash bedding and towels regularly. Hoover once a week at a minimum. Extractor fan on when cooking. Bins out every 3 days or so.

ThatLibraryMiss · 23/02/2023 22:43

Get some lemon oil, which is one of the cheapest oils. When your dishwasher has just finished, while it's still hot, sprinkle lemon oil on the inside of the door then close the door for a few minutes. The heat evaporates the lemon oil and when you open the door to empty the dishwasher it'll waft out. It's such a lovely sunny smell.

totally disagree as they are not mutually exclusive, and some candles and essential oils smell lovely.

I'm the same, I love both
Did laugh when I opened the door once to find two police stood there, first words were "your house smells amazing, what is it? Oh sorry, we are the police by the way" Grin
Because the uniforms and police car didn't give it away (and yes I told her what the scent was!)

BlueSeaWave · 23/02/2023 22:50

All windows open for 10mins and blast it through and then shut them and it’s all good.

StarDolphins · 23/02/2023 22:52

I have 4 things that work….(on top of normal cleaning)

  1. bleach in toilet - travels through house
  2. all washing HAS to go on line all year round, even if it doesn’t dry…sometimes mine is frozen when I bring it in🤣
  3. windows open part of the day
  4. wax melts - I’m currently on some FOSSE ones!

Why on earth would you want the revolting smell of bleach to travel around your house 😕

I like it & it smells better than my wet dog!

winterpastasalad · 23/02/2023 23:10

I think some houses never smell good, no matter what you do. I lived in an older (rental) house until recently, the carpets were old and no matter how long I opened the windows for or cleaned, there was always a dusty smell and cooking smells literally lingered for days. Someone once commented that they associated my house with rotting food 😒. I recently moved to a newer house and the difference is amazing. It smells clean and fresh, despite me doing less cleaning now. There is also a stark contrast in how much dust there is.

Bleach smells awful. You don’t get bleach scented air fresheners or similar. I mean it’s great you love the smell of bleach but for most it’s harsh chemical and very few people are saying where can I buy bleach scented candles, sprays or oils.

Liquorish · 23/02/2023 23:22

I like to put a few drops of essential oil (lavender/lemon/orange/eucalyptus) in Henry’s bag when hoovering, leaves all rooms smelling lovely. Artificial sprays and diffusers give me a headache and itchy eyes/ears.

TheChosenTwo · 23/02/2023 23:23

Oh my god the smell of bleach turns my stomach, I don’t use it ever and it’s literally toxic to marine life.
I stick to opening windows and doors daily, keeping on top of washing fabrics and generally keeping on top of things like laundry, hoovering where there are carpets, blankets go in the machine with bedding, cushion covers once a month or so. Windows open after cooking and clean up soon after dinner (this one sometimes slides on a Friday night, we are not perfect!). Wash your kitchen bin out. Ours gets a hot boiling kettle once a week on ‘bin day’.
I really don’t like a lot of artificial smells, wax melts, plug in things, those spray things that go off automatically… we don’t have pets (well not furry ones anyway) so don’t have that to contend with but the fake smelly things my mum has sometimes trigger my migraines. Good excuse to go round less I suppose!

WinterMusings · 23/02/2023 23:31

Yep, keep the house clean & air it daily, then you don't need oils, wax melts, Reed diffusers, stuff on radiators etc etc just to mask the smell.

I can't be in the same room as any of those things, they're really not good for you.

FetchezLaVache · 23/02/2023 23:39

OnMyWayToSenility · 23/02/2023 15:46

Open all windows, dust, wipe, Hoover clean everything and close windows

Hand clean washing out

Love this typo! I am now picturing you standing in your hall with a pile of neatly folded tea towels, solemnly passing one to each of your guests as they enter.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 23/02/2023 23:52

I've really got into eco cleaners recently - like Purdy and Figg.... and they really beat the old bleachy cleaners which used to hurt my chest. And they smell delicious.

nevertakeadvicefromsomeonewhosfallingapart · 23/02/2023 23:54

I have an electric lamp with wax melts and use Freckle Face wax melts, as they seem to be as natural as possible and the scent lasts a long time. The lamp I have is similar to this one Colour Changing Electric Wax Burner for Wax Melts and Essential Oils | LED Light/Lamp and Wax Warmer | Easy Clean Silicone Dish | 26.5cm (Black) amzn.eu/d/60a3wqO

Spirini · 24/02/2023 00:49

@TheChosenTwo bleach is quite definitely not toxic to marine life! It evaporates.

Zoflora on the other hand is.

alwayscheery · 24/02/2023 07:51

Open back door and front door and all windows every day.
Replace the liner in your bin and put the rubbish out before you go to bed every day.
Wash or wipe all bins with Zoflora or other disinfectant at least weekly.
Use specialised cleaner in bath and shower wastes and sink and basin plug holes and toilets weekly, preferably overnight, a dishwasher tablet and hot water also work too.
Change bedding weekly.
Don't let the laundry build up, do a load every day, nothing worse than a festering pile of dirty washing.
