How to make house smell nice?

Pancakes2023 · 23/02/2023 15:44

Any ideas how I can make my home smell nicer? I'd prefer not to use artificial air fresheners full of chemicals and it's too cold to just open a window!

Wax melts

OnMyWayToSenility · 23/02/2023 15:46

Open all windows, dust, wipe, Hoover clean everything and close windows

Hand clean washing out

redpinkyellow · 23/02/2023 15:53

Clean and dust those places that don't get a frequent clean.
Radiators
Throws
Cushion covers
Skirting boards & doors
Light fittings
Hoover behind beds & other bigger furniture

And clean windows

I'm sure someone will be along shocked that I don't do this weekly!

And open windows even if just for an hour

OhNoNotThatAgain · 23/02/2023 15:58

Use furniture polish on the radiators as well as the furniture.
Don't leave shoes out, especially not whiffy trainers.
And you do need to open the windows and get some fresh air in, even if it is only for a few minutes a day. Open them all at once, and get it over with quickly.

Basically get to the root cause of anything that can hold a aroma. (Sometimes it’s down to stale carpets & furnishings.)

For example:
Get carpets cleaned.
Consider curtains to the cleaners or launder them yourself.
Wash dog bedding regularly.
Wash up your kitchen floor.
Wipe out the oven regularly.
Replace or clean the filter in extractor fan in kitchen.
Clean the extractor.
Crack open a window if you fry bacon or something similar.
Wipe or dust every surface you can.
Vacuum regularly and occasionally use Shake n Vac.
As you finish your dusting & vacuuming, use a nicely scented fresh air spray.

No good using scented candles etc whilst the cause of an unwanted aroma or pong remains in fabrics.

Frequent Bleach in toilets
Incense cones (less messy than sticks )

BergamotandLime · 23/02/2023 16:07

A diffuser with essential oils?

Though really the only way to keep it smelling really nice is by making sure it's really clean. I work in a care home and people always remark on how nice it smells and it is deep cleaned constantly. Every room is hoovered every day, all touch points cleaned with zoflora, toilets cleaned every day etc.

Sprig1 · 23/02/2023 16:07

Open the windows, you don't need to keep them open ,just give the house a good airing.

Rebel2 · 23/02/2023 16:08

Hoover regularly
Extractor fan
Open the window for some time every day
Wash throws/blankets etc regularly
Essential oil Reed diffusers

Not shocked at all, i don't do some of these things often. Skirting and doors not fully as the skirting is so poor and the doors 🤦‍♀️ Well as soon as you wipe with a damp cloth, you take off the tipex like paint that they have slapped on badly 🥲

Blingstar · 23/02/2023 16:11

Buy a tea light candle diffuser and get essential oils from Amazon. Lemon eucalyptus is my particular favourite. Makes the house smell delicious. Better than reed diffusers.

userxx · 23/02/2023 16:14

My house used to sell beautiful, then the boyfriend and his dog moved in, wax melts work a treat.

Passerillage · 23/02/2023 16:17

Make sure all textiles are clean. Make sure all kitchen surfaces are clean and the dishwasher loaded promptly. Don't let damp washing sit for too long.

You HAVE to open the windows for about an hour a day. There's no way around that.

Then when everything else is gone (cooking, dirty dishes, grubby rug or sofa covers), scented candles.

Pancakes2023 · 23/02/2023 16:51

Thanks for your ideas! I've got a new baby so not much time for doing a deep clean at the moment, but you have made me realise I need to do more. Never thought about the carpets and curtains etc. I will try to open windows, especially when spring arrives. I'm just someone who feels the cold very easily and hates draughts!
I'm going to look into essential oils for a diffuser as that sounds like the best option.

cotton wool pads on radiators with some added water and essential oils...i use orange and geranium....smells lovely.

Pancakes2023 · 23/02/2023 16:52

I wish I could do the radiator trick but my heating is all electric

Good blast of fresh air every single day, even if it's only for 15 minutes.

Wash soft furnishings, blinds and curtains.

Pull furniture out and have a good clean under and behind.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/02/2023 17:41

Open windows really is the best way. Put on jumpers, an hour will make a big difference.
Using bicarb like you would shake n vac helps too, especially with pets.

totally agree, we use candles and after we clean we put out/use lemon but if the place hasn’t been aired it does nothing

Rebel2 · 23/02/2023 17:57

I use these which are lovely

Late summer is my fave

SallyWD · 23/02/2023 18:15

Hyacinths make the house smell beautifully!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 23/02/2023 18:24

Open windows and clean whilst they are open - keeps you warm and everything will smell nice. Get into a routine of cleaning furnishings such as throws, blankets, carpets (if you have them) rugs, curtains, cushions etc and sponge clean blinds.
It isn’t easy, it is hard work more so with babies/toddlers/work etc etc in the mix. Just do what you can in small bursts.
Anything else just masks the root cause and after awhile you won’t notice the expensive candle/incense smell anyway!

Nutellaontoastplease · 23/02/2023 18:33

I love the Yankee Candle Scenterpiece wax burners. They're electric and the wax melts can be quite pricey but I buy off vinted and can normally get a good deal. They last for ages too. They smell gorgeous.

TheMatriarchy · 23/02/2023 18:39

An essential oil diffuser, and quality essential oils to use with it. I'm currently loving amphora aromatics, quite delicious blends and very reasonable price.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 23/02/2023 18:43

Open the front and back doors together. You'll get a through draught which will air the place quicker than just opening windows.
