2 washing machines

Does anyone have 2 washing machines at home and, if so, why do you have 2 and do you find it useful?

I don’t have two washing machines (but have 2 dishwashers so not against multiple appliances!) however I think just utilising a quick wash more may benefit you. I wash most things, apart from towels, bedding etc, on a quick 14 minute wash. Does the job as long as clothes aren’t really dirty which they generally aren’t. Just means you can get more loads done within an hour.

sorry I know that doesn’t really answer your question!

Thanks!

I'm just curious because we're doing up a new utility/laundry room and the question has come up of whether we should install a second washing machine. Both my DH and our builder think this would be very useful - which is interesting given that neither of them does any laundry by admission - but I can't see the advantage. Even if one could run two machines simultaneously, there's only so much I could tumble dry/hang at once. Am I missing something? We are a family of 3. No pets and I do all the washing...

Unless you plan on having 2 tumble dryers won't it just mean one load is sat round doing nothing whilst you dry the first lot? X

IglesiasPiggl · 23/01/2023 13:18

My brother has two washing machines because they are a large family (4 children). They prefer two separate ones to one very large one because it means they can do two different types of wash at the same time (eg whites in one, sports gear in the other). I don't think two are required for families of five or less though.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 23/01/2023 13:20

Yeah I don't see the point tbh, as getting them dry has always been the limiting factor in my house. Admitted, we don't have a dryer, just 3 dryer racks and it does OK over the winter as long as we do a load every other day and bedding towels as needed obvs!

Ditzyduck · 23/01/2023 13:22

I can’t see the point for 3 people maybe if u had 5 kids.

Yawningalldaylong · 23/01/2023 13:37

Could you just get a washer with a large drum. I have an eco wash that's really energy efficient (but 2 1/2 hours long) but my drum is 10kg. It may not save time but it's cheaper to run.

Relocatiorelocation · 23/01/2023 13:38

I wouldn't see a benefit, it's the drying that takes time not the washing. I'd prefer to use the space to have a drying cupboard, that would be the dream!

Even at 5 and I cant see the point tbh.
Just get a large drum size.

Mommabear20 · 23/01/2023 13:42

I'd get a second if I had the space but get a washer/drier.

Theoldwoman · 23/01/2023 13:43

My friend has two which are both always going but they do have 14 kids and a large home for multiple drying racks.

Ohdearnotagain76 · 23/01/2023 13:43

I have 2 a 9kg and a 10kg. The 9kg is in garage and used for outside wear, like overalls, dog walking clothes, pet blankets, seat covers from vehicles and inside machine used for daily things. Family of 6 with cats and dogs. Outside machine was our household machine and developed a leak my hubby could mend it but would take 10 days for the part so we brought another one and then repaired the old one. The old one is so useful, I did think it would be a waste but it's been a god send at times.

OrangePomander · 23/01/2023 13:45

I wouldn’t have two washing machines, but I do have two freezers that are pretty much permanently full so would prioritise that if I had spare space.

Ladyoftheprom · 23/01/2023 13:48

I have 2 washing machines and 2 tumble driers - total game changer for me/dh and 4dc

fairlygoodmother · 23/01/2023 13:49

I’ve got a very small one that sits under the main machine and uses its water supply. It’s occasionally useful for whites because I rarely have a full load but I use it a lot less than I thought I would. I wouldn’t get it again and I definitely wouldn’t want another full size machine.

14?!

FinallyHere · 23/01/2023 13:56

We have a top loader w/m in the upstairs en-suite (and yes, it does comply with current building regs.) that mobility challenged DH can still use, a small change to keep his independence as long as possible.

The house is kept quite warm, also restricted mobility related, so anything that is hung up, is dry in a few hours

Washer / dryer in garage. Only really dry towels do they stay soft and fluffy.

Not quite a rock and roll lifestyle but here we are at this stage in our lives.

meetmeatmidnights · 23/01/2023 13:56

My mum had two washing machines and one tumble dryer - I'm forever jealous of this! I think as a family of 5 + many many pets it worked so well to keep things flowing and keep pet bits out of the family clothes machine 😂

I would love two washing machines, two dishwashers and four ovens - but we are only a family of two currently 😂

StarsSand · 23/01/2023 13:57

For three people it seems quite wasteful TBH.

StarsSand · 23/01/2023 13:58

Unless you had two driers as well, wouldn't you be held up by the need for drying anyway?

thisplaceisweird · 23/01/2023 13:58

The best thing I've ever heard of in a house being built is the laundry on the top floor where wardrobes/dressing rooms are - no need to take laundry up and down. Genius.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 23/01/2023 14:03

I have lived in apartments with shared laundry facilities. The apartment with 3 washers and 3 dryers was great. I could get all 3 loads done at once. It only worked because I could dry it all at the same time. So I agree with pp, an second washing machine is only useful if you can dry all the washing at once. If you have adequate washing lines and rend to hang dry then worth considering, but it seems unnecessarily expensive. I would go for extra storage in the laundry instead!

rwalker · 23/01/2023 14:03

Normal washer but also have twin tub that was left in house when we bought it
use twin tub spinner a lot as spins at 2800 rpm so towels snd bedding take a fraction of time and cost to dry
on a good day in summer fire twin tub up first thing have the equivalent of 4 loads of washing done in hour and out in line

BertieBotts · 23/01/2023 14:08

I think a larger drum (and large drum tumble) makes way more sense. As you say, you're constrained more by drying time. Even if you hang stuff to dry there is only so much space you have for that too.

I saw a 17kg washing machine the other day with a little extra machine underneath. Very impressive, but even DH said what is the point. And it was about €1500.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 23/01/2023 14:11

If I had space I'd definitely have two freezers but can't see the point of two washing machines 🤷‍♀️ unless you also have two dryers or somewhere to hang loads of washing.
