2 washing machines

Does anyone have 2 washing machines at home and, if so, why do you have 2 and do you find it useful?

Found it, the extra underneath one is LG Twinwash.

MaverickGooseGoose · 23/01/2023 14:30

I don't see the point for the three people. I'd get a 9kg washer. Four of us, DH is uniform every day that needs to be changed, gym kits and stinky horse clothes for the kids on top of normal usage. I've never thought I need another washer!

In winter I do take bedding to the launderette as I struggle to get it all dry.

nbee84 · 23/01/2023 14:38

Not me but a house I worked in as a nanny. Laundry room upstairs with a washing machine and another in the boot room downstairs - great for the kids muddy gear and also used for the pets bedding. I can't really see the point of having 2 in 1 room unless for a large family.

Thanks!

I'm just curious because we're doing up a new utility/laundry room and the question has come up of whether we should install a second washing machine. Both my DH and our builder think this would be very useful - which is interesting given that neither of them does any laundry by admission - but I can't see the advantage. Even if one could run two machines simultaneously, there's only so much I could tumble dry/hang at once. Am I missing something? We are a family of 3. No pets and I do all the washing...

Well then obvs you'll need two tumble dryers as well!

Unless you have a big family, would you really ever use 2 washing machines ?

The cost of getting stuff dry if u put your first loads in 1st thing ours takes between 2 and 3 hours your 2nd loads isn’t ready to hang out till afternoon

The back log here has never been washing waiting to go in to be washed, more stuff waiting to dry.
I've got a bigger family that you , who at various points have done quite serious swim training (lots of towels)..... (and between them) ..... rugby, football, camping and various other mud related activities, ..... plus all the usual muckiness of nursery and infant school with small dc. Plus one who wet the bed quite a lot for a couple of years. I've NEVER though that I needed a 2nd washing machine though.

That said, if this is down the the space in a utility room, I would definitely leave space for the 2nd fridge, or 2nd freezer.
Just no need for a 2nd washing machine - oh, and that has applied even when I was washing the whole football team's kit for a while.

whizzpopping · 23/01/2023 16:15

Thanks for the insight all.

I'm going to suggest we get a beer fridge instead Smile

Do you have muddy stuff? Football rugby etc. that would be my other reason

Eughsame · 23/01/2023 19:52

I have two. Some clothes (obviously) don’t go in the dryer and hang so I can wash eg dark/work/adults clothes at the same time as I wash bedding, kids clothes, towels. I have two small children and regular houseguests (parents/sibs who don’t live nearby) so both machines are on almost every day most weeks. I also have a 10kg dryer so it can tumble almost two full loads if I pick out the bits to hang dry. Lifesaver for bedding and towels. Would definitely recommend if you have space.

Franticbutterfly · 23/01/2023 21:15

I have a fridge freezer, a larder fridge and a 600mm chest freezer. I don't think I could go back to a small fridge freezer, so I'd say stick an extra freezer in the futility room.

I don’t have two washing machines (but have 2 dishwashers so not against multiple appliances!) however I think just utilising a quick wash more may benefit you. I wash most things, apart from towels, bedding etc, on a quick 14 minute wash. Does the job as long as clothes aren’t really dirty which they generally aren’t. Just means you can get more loads done within an hour.

sorry I know that doesn’t really answer your question!

does that do a decent spin tho ? my quick wash is 34 minutes but i then need to run it on an extra spin

jtaeapa · 23/01/2023 21:20

I don't have 2 washers. But it is my secret dream!

i had to do an extra spin on my last machine but my new (cheap) Candy machine doesn’t need the extra spin. So I guess it depends on the model!

Wishiwasatailor · 23/01/2023 21:31

I think having 2 is good if you had pets or heavily soiled muddy clothes etc. keep one for clean and the other for dirty

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/01/2023 21:36

In my dream utility room I would have

One washing machine
One tumble dryer
One washer dryer

It would mean I can have 3 loads on the go at the same time.

Costacoffeeplease · 23/01/2023 21:37

We have two, one for the cat/dog beds and blankets and one for our stuff

gogohmm · 23/01/2023 21:40

For 3 people, no, a 10kg capacity washer and separate vented dryer would work fine. If (like me) you choose a heat pump dryer be prepared for very long drying times (cheaper though)

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/01/2023 21:41

I can see the point of extra freezer space for bargains and batch cooking, but cannot fathom why an average / smaller than average family would need 2 washing machines.

Maybe it’s just a way to get macho… about washing 😁

LoveBluey · 23/01/2023 21:46

I'd love 2 dishwashers and 2 fridges/freezers but cannot see how 2 washing machines would be useful - and I do about 12 loads of washing a week which I think is a lot for a family of 4.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 23/01/2023 21:52

I don't think you need two machines unless you have a large family.

We did cloth nappies in our one machine- it was very clean. There's no need to have a separate machine if you use the settings correctly. They're built to deal with mud and dirt.

ODFOx · 23/01/2023 21:57

I've just had an extension and although the plan was to have a washer and a dryer we have ( with it buying anything separately ended up with 2 washer dryers so we can wash 2 loads simultaneously, tumble 2 less ads simultaneously or drip dry . I'm surprised how often we wash 2 loads at once, but this may be an organisational flaw ( houseful of adult DC/guest family) so the utility/laundry room is the hardest hit of all!

TLDR: standard family one washer fine. Extended family might find it more convenient to run 2 machines simultaneously but you need to balance convenience vs cost for your own circumstances.

glasshole · 23/01/2023 22:01

I've had 4 kids at home in the past and always went for the biggest possible domestic drum capacity and two dryers instead. That meant that the 30-60 minutes wages were fine depending on levels of diet and then that 10-13kg load would be split between 2 condenser dryers and would be done within an hour. Much longer with those awful heat pumps ( I hate mine with a passion). Hoover do a 13kg that's great and has 14, 30 and 60 minute programs. Also has steam refresh and extra hygiene wash for after stomach bugs etc to kill germs.

BliainNua · 23/01/2023 22:10

A beer / wine fridge sounds like a much better idea 😁

Definitely, we have the wine fridge in the garage - could not sacrifice that for a second washing machine. Only two of us here though so if we had 5 children that could be a different story - probably could not afford the wine then😁
