small rooms

OP posts:

Lack of storage is the main one. No understairs cupboard/pantry/airing cupboard type space. No hallway, so the front door opens right out into the living room (although we're looking at putting that wall back in this year).
Long thin garden which is overlooked by many surrounding properties. No dining room or space for a table in the kitchen, so have to eat meals on laps.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 17/01/2023 19:13

Im also in a Victorian terrace.....the stairs are an absolute death trap...my 19 year old daughter has already fallen down them...they are so steep.

Stickstickstickstickstick · 17/01/2023 19:15

The tiny fucking ROUND sink in the kitchen. I could cope with tiny and I could cope with round, but both together 🤬

Sammysquiz · 17/01/2023 21:05

We’re fortunate to have a huge garage but it’s part of the downstairs of the house, so upstairs we have lots of space as the bedrooms go over the garage, but the kitchen and living room are small. Can’t afford to convert it, and DH doesn’t want to anyway as he’s filled the garage with all his crap 🙄

BelleSauvage9 · 17/01/2023 21:12

Lack of storage space
The tiny window in my big bedroom - v.fortunate to have a big bedroom but it's so dark and gloomy feeling in there because of the tiny window
The bathrooms layout which makes it impossible to use a normal shower curtain rail because there's nowhere to attach it properly

CrazyBiscuits · 17/01/2023 21:14

Tiny hallway. 2 people in it have to dance round eachother to get a coat and get out.

WaddleAway · 17/01/2023 21:15

Lurleene · 14/01/2023 23:51

No cupboard for the hoover

Same.

ShillyShallySherbet · 17/01/2023 21:17

Damp patches that I constantly have to clean, I wish all the bedrooms were upstairs, I wish we had a nicer view and nice walks and bike ride trails on our doorstep that don’t involve going on roads. That’s my wish list if we ever move but apart from those things I love my house!

GrouchyKiwi · 17/01/2023 21:23

Some of these complaints are huge issues, not tiny! Lack of storage and death trap stairs!

We've recently moved house. My tiny issues are those stupid plugs on levers in the bathroom sinks. They fuck me right off.

And the window treatments are hilarious. Pelmets, swags, bows, tassels and buttons all on floor-length drapes with tie-backs of the same fabric that also have tassels and rickrack on them. We've run out of our decorating budget after unexpectedly having to replace the boiler and some of the roof so these lovely curtains will be with us for a while, though I've hacked off some of the length so the radiators are freed from their tyranny.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 17/01/2023 21:34

Lol apart from my death trap stairs i love the rest of the house...as long as you are completely focussed coming down the stairs you will be fine...🤕

crazylady121 · 17/01/2023 21:42

Downstairs bathroom and no dining room.My dream to have a nice dining room or kitchen diner😊

Tlolljs · 18/01/2023 11:32

My understairs cupboard is a bastard. Every single time I hit my head.
Back garden doesn’t get much sun.
No where to hang coats.

TallulahBetty · 18/01/2023 11:37

No drive (just a communal carpark). But, we've managed thus far - it's not driven me (excuse the pun) to want to move yet

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 18/01/2023 22:57

@FeelingsAreNotFacts you can have your ceilings skimmed. We’ve done it throughout our house. Plasterers can skim off the rough bits and then plaster a nice new smooth ceiling over the top. The difference it’s made to the light is amazing, it reflects right through the rooms now. Before it was all dark and full of shadows and now we have lovely light bright ceilings.

You have to empty your room out though and cover your floors, and you might have to repaint here and there where some wet plaster might drip down your walls but it’s so worth the effort.

DeeClutterer · 19/01/2023 20:17

That the light switches are not right by the door as you come in for each room. Sometimes on the opposite wall. Who does that?!

Babooshka1990 · 19/01/2023 22:48

@Gwenhwyfar we have a shower hose on the bath but not a walk in shower. Hate it, but we recently moved into the house and can’t afford to change it yet!

User16458769 · 19/01/2023 22:56

Chimney breasts in living room, dining room and two bedrooms, means that wardrobes and furniture have to be measured to fit the space and you can guarantee that the item you want will be a couple of inches too big

Ladybird69 · 19/01/2023 23:43

Carpets everywhere and absolutely no storage or room for it, otherwise it’s great.

Mothership4two · 19/02/2023 01:14

Our house has been extended and the extension isn’t level with the rest of the house so you have to go down two steps from one part to the other. There must have been a good reason but it is awkward and looks rubbish

Chatterboxy · 19/02/2023 13:49

Tiny hall way.
Lack of cupboard space big enough for hoover/mops etc.

Ilovetocrochet · 19/02/2023 15:44

A previous owner dug out the lawn area then returned it to create raised flower beds. The land was already slightly sloping so now the lawn in now 3 ft lower than my patio and it’s very hard to carry the lawn mower down! The lawn also floods after heavy rain as it’s heave clay soil and close to the water table hence at times I’m looking at a paddling pool rather than a lawn!

Squidwitch · 21/02/2023 19:14

Many many things, but mostly the front door opening in so that it blocks off the door to the lounge, so when people come round you either need to send them up the stairs, or you have to retreat 8 foot down the ridiculously narrow hall, while leaving them to negotiate the door

Squidwitch · 21/02/2023 19:17

Kitchen window also, it faces the side return fence. About two foot away and six foot high. Just why! When these houses were built in the forties, this was brownfield, sooo much space, and yet the whole thing needs to be two foot wider and deeper. Also slopey ceilings/walls in all upstairs rooms. Why not just build the roof two foot higher!

Tumbleweed101 · 22/02/2023 23:42

No proper hallway. Front door opens straight onto stairs and a door to left and right. Nowhere to put shoes and coats by front door.

The airing cupboard goes into the smallest bedroom. Can literally get a single bed and bedside table in there and nothing else. All the bedrooms and living room are tiny.

I do have a good size garden to make up for it and stunning sunset views in the summer from my bedroom.

namechanged221 · 22/02/2023 23:47

I would like a downstairs loo and shower.
Need better insulation in DS bedroom as it's over the garage extension fine in the 1960s
